It was clearly both, he did not want to be second driver again and probably got more money as well. Right choice for him and completely understandable for M-Sport as well. Obviously you prefer the World Champion. Cant really find much to argue here for anybody. Everyone did the right choice for themselves at the time.

And Citroen didn't want him at the end of 2016 (Toyota wanted him but they change their minds then when he turn them down). And didn't want him at the end of 2017 so badly.. So now they were his only option so he go with them...
