Officer Richard Matthews was killed in an automobile accident while responding to backup another officer. His patrol car struck a tree after he swerved to avoid a box in the roadway on Shipyard Boulevard.

He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Matthews had served with the agency for 2 years and had previously served with the New York City Police Department for 3 years.

I didn't know him, but it hits close to home. Wilmington NC is only 90 miles away from here, and this is the same manner in which my deputy got killed on October 21, 2000 (only difference was that Deputy Jeff Matheny swerved to avoid a moron that pulled out in front of him in stead of a box). And yesterday was the 8th Anniversary of the tragic loss we all felt so deeply. Well, Jeff, now you'll have back up in trying to chase after Dale! I'm sure you still haven't caught him yet, but knowing you, you are still trying to write that ticket......

RIP Officer Mathews, we have the watch, now.....
