"Socks" dies.

Tragedy struck the dangerous world of mousing yesterday, as "Socks" the cat was killed during the final dramatic moments of chasing a mouse at the Clinton estate. Early in the event he fell behind other competitors, as he got slowed down by a unattentive backmarker.

Track officials and eyewitness accounts stated that he was rapidly closing in "Fresno-Bob", who was holding third position, when misfortune struck; both cats collided, causing "Socks" to lose control and become airborne heading straight into a barrier - known as "Spike", the neighbors pitbull . Experts stated that the would have been little chance of survival after such an impact.

After the death was officially confirmed, cat owner Bill Clinton announced that there were no words to express the impact of the tragedy, but did however say that "... he was our best mouser, technical skills-wise and talent-wise. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and kittens."


"Socks" was widely considered to be one of the greatest mousers of all time, of who ever competed in what is regarded as the pinacle of mousing, Feline 1.

His rivals shared no less sentiments towards his abilities:

"Teggie" (Rosburg) " There is no doubt that "Socks" was extraordinarily couragous: he was the worst against you could mouse I met, but totally fair. A great mouser! "

"Spots" (Laffite) admired his talent as well, "No cat can do miracles, you know, but Socks made you wonder."



During he tenure at Team Clinton he compiled the following records:

43 victories (of actually catching mice)

35 Fastest Traps (cornering and making quick dispatch of mice)

27 Mole Positions (corning and capturing moles in their holes as well)


He was 18.
