I wonder why spectators didn't turn out to see a premier race at a legendary track like Monza? Are the ticket prices to LMS at Monza races unusually high?

No not really. As I understand it there was a lack of promotion. LMS at Silverstone in 2007 did not have more than 5k in spectators as there was little promotion. Silverstone LMS 2008 had a lot of promotion and 30k+ showed up. Monza just was not promoted.

Monza has also been dropped from the 2009 FIA GT calender.
