I think it’s more about getting a good set up and experimenting with various settings until they get there.
They can still achieve this with a clean road.
The drivers and engineers can still determine a good set up regardless of times. Driver ‘feel’ and engineer data analysis allow them to achieve this.

Things should be compared to the nearest drives, because the road doesn't change so dramatically after the first two or so. Rallying is anyway about changing conditions. Every corner is different to each other and when you go to the rally you can't be sure of the conditions or road order.

I heard that Loeb had a skill to drive the test stage with the same pace throughout the day. Then at the end of the day he would show what he had learned during the day and make a drastically faster time.

How enormously disappointing ! Monday test is always an opportunity to build the fever for the rally but not this year ! Everyone, including accredited media banned from the stage. First time Solbergs have been together on a stage and no footage. Wasted opportunity.

Glad I didn't try and get to it now... I imagine some will still find a way!

I get with private team tests that they don't want to have to manage spectators, but to me, not allowing spectators (or even media) to attend an official pre-event test seems like a wasted opportunity.

There's so much talk about cutting down on testing because of costs, but it's worse that all this money is being spent with a show being put on, but we're not allowed to go and see it! That's where the waste is.

Breen tested in Wales earlier this month, where, despite a week of late summer sunshine and high temperatures, the team found a wet road in the Dyfi Forest complex.

“It’s vital to have a wet test,” said Breen, “and we found somewhere which retained the water. It was out of the way of the sun and under the trees and it was good. We had the bowser there as well, just in case we needed to dampen it down again.

“The test went really well. We worked on the car through the day and I felt really confident in it. I’m really happy with the way it finished and I definitely think we have the package to do something good.”

The testing conditions could play a big role, especially for the first day of the rally. The likes of Ogier/Lappi/ Meeke look like they had bone dry conditions only, whereas the rally is going to be very wet and slippy.
Those 3 drivers also dont have any data available from last year here in their current cars, so would they just base their initial setup on their teammates (in Meeke's case), or the setups Citroen ran last year for Mads and Craig (in Ogier and Lappi's case)?

Shakedown will certainly be important for a few of the drivers anyway.
