I think turbo engines for this small cars are not suitable for rally.
Why? They are well suitable. They just need at least some modifications due to emissions/fuel consumption optimization of the stock units. The naturally aspirated engines still on the market are much worse for racing use (Mazda or Toyota engines for example).
The point is that turbo engine optimized for emissions and fuel consumption can be tuned to be good for racing. Naturally aspirated engine working in Atkinson's cycle hardly.
By the way the turbine in 1.0 EcoBoost has something like 35 mm in diameter (I have it on the desk). I think that with some ECU modifications this engine shall not have an issue with turbo lag.
It is boring to watch and boring to drive :)
There is no other option so...
Yes, that is the biggest problem...
Peugeot 208 Iberica Cup will continue next year, with events taking place in Portugal and Spain. The calendar wasn’t revealed but it’s already known it will start in the first round of the Portuguese series (Rali Serras de Fafe) in mid February and may take again the initial legs of Portugal and Catalunya WRC events.
I disagree that these turbo cars are boring to watch. I like the 1.0T more than the older generation Fiesta R2 with 1.6N/A. I've always liked watching the Fiesta R2T's in JWRC, or in Belgium, or even in France with their junior trophy (where they're less powerful). I think the new generation Fiesta R2 is going to surprise us in a positive way... :)
Surprised to see Eerik Pietarinen as an entry in the ADAC Adam Cup...
