I've never really got why VW went and created an R5 when their sister firm Škoda already built a highly-successful one.
Was it really just to keep the VW Motorsport guys in a job after the WRC pull-out ?

Hrabánek confirmed that Škoda will continue to develop and build R5 cars for several more years. I'm quite sure they will at least until new Fabia IV comes.

"The roads in this place are used to test cars for Dakar; it's rougher than anything we would have seen on the Acropolis Rally. It's extreme, that's why we go there.
It's a bit silly to 'test their car to destruction' but allow someone to be around to photograph it.
The pictures will be making the story before they can explain them.
