Belgian Grégoire Munster(Hyundaï) is leading the Rallye de Castine terre d'Occitanie after day one !!!!
In fact both Thibaut Durbec(VW) and even more Jean-Baptiste Franceschi(Citroën) had a puncture on SS3 of the first leg, explaining their lateness(Durbec is +17" and Franceschi is +29" off) :mark:
Surprisingly Nasser Al Attiyah(VW)is quite off the pace(5th but almost 2 minutes off Munster)
Leading the 2WD in his 208 Rally 4, Mathieu Franceschi(Jean-Baptiste younger brother)is 10th overall
Tomorrow sunday still 6 stages left to go...
To put things in perspective, it's Munster's 5th gravel rally with a 4WD (R5) car. He had two punctures (lost roughly 35s on one stage with it), two overshoots at junctions, stalled the engine once, and he's leading by 17,8s advance. I expected him to be fast, but this is stunning, and very promising for the future... :)
Today Grégoire Munster managed to extend his lead and won by 47s over Jean-Baptiste Franceschi. It is the first time since 2013 a foreign driver won a French gravel round. Very strong, considering his limited experience and knowing the speed of Franceschi, who was faster than Fourmaux in the previous round. Durbec and Al-Attiyah (both Polo R5) finished 3rd and 4th.
Next French gravel round had to be Rallye Terre des Cardabelles, but it's cancelled due to the coronavirus. Then there's the Terre du Vaucluse in November, that round is not cancelled yet...
Rallye Coeur de France is running at the moment. Seems like it will be a very nice battle for the win. The Alpine GTs are less competitive than they were in Rallye du Mont Blanc. The stages in Coeur de France have a lot more slow junctions (somewhat similar to Rallye le Touquet), so GT cars lose more due to the lack of traction compared to 4WD cars.
