I was with a group that did a two week Dnieper River cruise from Kiev to the Black Sea. I only got as close as what the picture I attached shows. We were told that the inside of the building is nothing special, but I did get to tour a couple of other castles closeby that are quite impressive.

My wife is originally from Canada but been in Australia for 17 years. Her mother's family was originally from the Ukraine although they were ethnic Germans. She wants to go back and try and trace any rellations still there.

Geeze Louise, cossie16. Sounds like your wife & I might be kin! Seventh cousins maybe? Both of my parents are ethnic Germans born in the Ukraine. They came to Canada just after WWII. So the reason I was there was that they took me & my siblings back to show us where they were born.

I know Katherine the Great invited many groups to settle in the Ukrainian Steppes in the 1780's, so the chances are slim, but if your wife's ancestory is Mennonite I would recommend the cruise I was on. Very informative in terms of finding out who your forefathers were, and what they accomplished in this area.

She certainly is a menno, her mother's maiden was Jansen, she was born in Vancouver after her parents went there after end of wwII. Her father isn't a menno though. I did a quick search on the net and found Mennonite Heritage Cruises, am I right in guessing you went with them?

Yup, they're the ones.

Does she know which village or settlement they were born in? I might be able to send pictures if she's interested.
