Hi everyone,
I’m writing this from Lyon as I head back home after our first proper pre-rally test with the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRC team. I’ve had a couple of days up in the mountains, getting to know my Yaris WRC ahead of the Rallye Monte Carlo that starts the 2019 season and also, of course, getting to know my new co-driver Seb Marshall at the same time.
It’s been a great couple of days, I have to say. Yesterday was pretty much bone dry – not exactly typical Monte Carlo weather, you’d have to say, but perfect for allowing me to find out more about the Yaris. Don’t forget that before yesterday, I hadn’t driven the car on asphalt before – so the fact that the conditions were dry and predictable was really useful for me. It also helped that I knew the stretch of road pretty well too.
Having racked up the miles yesterday, we left the test site hoping that a bit of more changeable weather would come in overnight and give us more typical Monte roads for the second day of the test. And sure enough, we arrived this morning to find that there’d been freezing rain and there were five and a half kilometres of sheet black ice up and over a col. Tricky, but perfect!
The ice melted throghout the day so the conditions evolved; there was a fair bit of mud by the end of our running, in fact, so it was really slippery, with lots of differing levels of grip. Again, that’s what you’re after when you’re preparing for Monte. We got pretty much everything you could expect from that rally over the two days, in fact – except pure full-on snow.
So I’m pleased with how it went. And that goes for my first two days working with Seb too. We got on really well, so it was a good start. The team was functioning really nicely too, and I feel comfortable in the car.
I couldn’t ask for any more, to be honest. Now we get a chance to switch off a bit over the Christmas break – making sure we switch back on againnice and early in the New Year to be ready for Monte!
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous 2019. And to thank you, as always, for your support. 2018 was a bit of a rollercoaster ride but I’ve been really touched by the support on here, and we’ve ended the year in a good place and looking forward to a new season, with a new team and a new car. I can’t wait.
Regards,
Kris
