Britain?
Poland?
Nope, not Denmark, Switzerland, Britain or Poland. This one will likely surprise you!
Hi Caroline (nee CarrieM) and Schmenke! You too, Cap'n.
Edgar the Crow is on vacation. Always goes south in February. ;)
Indeed. Good to see you on the board. But I'm bummed that it wasn't Iceland. I was sooooooo sure!!Quote:

Double post
Sweden, hi Breeze
Nope, not Sweden.
Let's try that hint again:
That democracy didn't last much more than a dozen years, and that land is no longer considered an independent nation.
Malta?
South Vietnam.... I have no idea about this one.
I will say the Ottoman Empire
P.S If I'm right let Caroline choose a question.
Is this somewhere in the Balkans?
Good to see you around Breeze :)
No longer an independent nation? Hmmmm. The Basque country?
Nope, nobody has it yet, though schmenke could be on to something with Malta?? ;)
Corsica?
DING DING DING DING! Winner, winner chicken dinner!
Corsica it is Gannex, and in 1755 predating both the USA and France!
OK. Here's a question.
In Britain, you can never be far from the coast. What's the furthest away you can get? Which town or city (meaning a place with more than 50,000 inhabitants) is furthest from the sea?
I've been told it's Northampton.
Milton Keynes?
I'd guess Coventry :s
or Rugby
Lutterworth in Leicestershire is as far from the coast as you can be in the UK, aproximately 71 miles.
Right, Jon Brown! Coventry it is.
How far away, approximately, are you from the coast when you're in Coventry?
About 120 miles :?:
No. Less than 120 miles.
Depends if the tide is in or not! :p :erm:
60 miles?
I'll give you that, Caroline, as sixty miles. The truth is, it depends what you call the nearest point on the coast. If you call the eastern end of the Bristol Channel part of the "sea", then sixty miles is about right.
So by my reckoning, the winners are Jon Brown and Caroline. Do either of you have a question?
I'll jump in as long as I am not treading on anyone's toes.
Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian adventurer and geographer of sorts, tried to prove that Polynesia was originally populated with the peoples from South America. He made it a fair distance on the raft 'Kon Tiki' with minimal supplies but crashed on a reef in the Pacific Ocean.
Which group of Islands did he reach?
Tristan De Cunha?
tuamotu ?
Correct Tomi :)
Over to you.
I did visit an interesting place a few weeks ago called, Angkor Thom, what is it and where is it?
Um.. am thinking it is in SE Asia, possibly Cambodia. Is it an ancient city?
Im impressed Caroline, its in Siem Rep, Cambodia, part of Angkor Wat.Quote:
