It's just like what they did with the ToCA series. They can't concentrate on one form of racing (BTCC) as they think it won't sell much, so they add as much variety to it as possible, so the game becomes full of unnecessary cars and it takes a bit away from the actual gameplay. The PS1 CMRs didn't have all the extra things on them, just simple rally cars and stages.
If I get a PS3, I will definitely buy this game. Probably because it's quite easy and I get really frustrated with difficult games sometimes. :o
