Things usually don't brake from nothing. Of course there can be a material issue or something like that but in 90% it is from hitting something too hard or something hard too many times.

If you are given stricly two alternatives; mechanical failure or driving mistake - to which category you would put Latvala's situation?

I would put it in the third, unmentioned, category -- he hit a rock. Since it's obviously not a just a random mechanical failure, and it's also not really a driving mistake. Just bad luck.
