Looks like it was modified at some point to be offset to the left too... great pictures from both of you guys.... SoCal - where is the car now??
Dan Gurney drove the Mickey Thompson #34 stock-block Buick rear engine car in the 1962 Indy 500. That picture is clearly not Dan, so I’ll guess that’s Mickey himself shaking it down. It is a Buick V8 215 engine.
Wednesday, February 24, 2010 Article: http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2010...-to-400-m-p-h/
FYI: The Mickey Thompson team raced a Buick 215 powered car in the 1962 Indianapolis 500. The Australian firm Repco converted this engine for Formula One by reducing it to 3.0 L (183 cu in) (using con-rods from the 2.5 L/153 cu in Daimler V8) and fitting a single overhead camshaft per bank rather than the shared pushrod arrangement. Repco-powered Brabhams won the F1 championship twice, in 1966 and 1967.
Where is that car, you asked ??? Now, nearly 50 years after that feat, the N.H.R.A. museum has opened “Mickey Thompson: First American to 400 M.P.H.,” an exhibition honoring the milestone and Thompson’s career and life, which were cut short by his murder in 1988. Luckily for museum visitors, Thompson had a hard time parting with old iron. At the entrance, the restored Challenger I is set against a white backdrop accompanied by old grainy Bonneville movies. Farther inside, there are seven significant Thompson racecars…
“Mickey Thompson: First American to 400 M.P.H.” runs through October 2010 at the Wally Parks N.H.R.A. Motorsports Museum at the Los Angeles County Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Avenue., Pomona, Calif.; (909) 622-2133; www.museum.nhra.com
Still looking for the Driver, Year and Track.
Anybody have a guess?
Tough one, it seems it has to be a Buick engined car in 1962 at Indy - can't see that the #34 ran anywhere else...
Obviously not Gurney - so perhaps Bill Cheesbough or Chuck Daigh....??
Chris you are correct on the driver it is Bill Cheesbough 1962 IMS. It would have been cool if it was Gurney in the picture.Quote:

well, that didn't take long. Somehow I have fond memories of Meier, specially during the race at the Roval in Brasil. He served as a 'moving chicane" between Greg Moore and Zanardi. That was some race at the end!
Ykiki, you're up.

I am not sure of the track- This car was driven for sure at Michigan 500 - The photo looks like a road course so I will guess Road America.
I take that back - looking at the 'armco' barriers it is probably Watkins Glen NY
What confuses me is the "Northwest Mazda" sign in the background, which immediately made me think it was Portland, but there's a mound behind it that doesn't look very much like Portland. The dry grass has me thinking it could be Laguna Seca.Quote:

As always, you got it!! This thing was/is(?) in the tent near the museum at the track this month. It had a neat little history and was restored beautifully.... It looks so much like an Eagle in pictures but in person you can much more clearly see how different it is....
If you have anything you want to t post you are up - if not I'll post some more of the pictures I took at the track of some pretty neat older stuff over the next couple of days......
Cool car Chris as I saw it run in 1972. Read an article about the car that the bulkheads we essentially an eagle and the rest of it was built by Foyt. Not sure if that was fact or just what the author thought but the car looks great. I have a photo of that car in American Van Lines colors with a number 20 on it when it was up for sale. New photo coming up.
With everyone looking forward to seeing the 2012 car coming out I have posted a photo from the past that looks like the future.

You are correct Wilf.... I posted this photo because of how much the new car looks like a late seventies early eighties car. Look at this one or Danny O's Intersport car and you can see how much they look like the 2012 car except for the nose. Like stuff we work on for the military here what's old is new.
Your turn to post...

This is also a from a transition period and I used a shot of two cars to emphasize the difference. Name the drivers, cars, location and year.
Driver - #93 Dan Gurney - #2 AJ Foyt Jr.
Car - #93 Lotus- Ford / #2 Trevis-Offy
Track - Milwaukee
Year - 1963
Nicely done. That was a Russ Lake photo who has the greatest collection of Milwaukee and Indy action. Your turn.
