NIki Mayr-Melnhof is preparing to start his first full season in the FIA European Rally Championship at the wheel of an even faster Ford.
The former Austrian champion has upgraded to M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta R5 MkII for 2020 and has high hopes for his new challenger.
“We are anticipating there is a good change made and for sure it will be faster,” said Mayr-Melnhof. “The main thing is the engine, there is much more power in the low revs, [compared] with the old car. The centre of gravity is much, much lower the steering is a big advantage.
“I drove a World Rally Car five or six years ago and the steering seems very similar to a World Rally Car. There are a lot of small changes which add up to better car, more drivable and easier to drive. We also hope it’s quicker.”
As well as testing in Italy on Tuesday, Mayr-Melnhof has tested and rallied in Hungary and Czech Republic ahead of the new ERC season.
“We still got a bit to do set-up wise but we’re going to work with an engineer from M-Sport who is going to come out for the rally and squeeze out the last potential of the car,” said the Drift Company Rally Team driver.
You can see on this video the engine is still dying on the exit from very slow hairpins:

They've failled with the WRC but they're doing a good job with the R5. Congrats Citroen Racing!

Is he quitting, or buying different R5?

Great to be able to get the Proton Iriz R5 out on-track after lockdown, with the aim of testing some new settings for Oliver Mellors.

Even after sampling the competing R5s in depth, Crugnola still prefers the C3, and “not just because I drive a Citroën, but because it’s true,” as he’s quick to qualify.
“With the Citroën I’m more confident with the front axle, which is very important for my driving style,” Crugnola explained to DirtFish.
“With the other R5s that I drove in the past, I had to change my driving style a bit. Now I can brake a little bit earlier and I can get on the throttle earlier, because I can preload the front axle a little bit less.

"M-Sport pair Esapekka Lappi and Teemu Suninen will join rivals from Hyundai and Toyota in contesting the South Estonia Rally next weekend, two weeks before the World Rally Championship resumes with Rally Estonia.
Lappi will drive a privately owned Fiesta WRC from JanPro Racing, run by former WRC driver Janne Tuohino while Suninen will pilot a Fiesta R5 Mk2."
I would rather have seen Suninen in Latavia but hopefully there will be a good entry for South Estonia too.
