on a eerie and spooky note and hopefully not a doomed tribute to the greatest #99 of all time, two young north american drivers in the field with hand braces for recent hand injuries, praying the exit of turn two never returns to haunt as it did that fateful October day. ... I'm just glad they paved the infield.

DeFerran's record was a lap record.

Don't know why my first reply with links didn't go through, but I'm on my tablet now, so you'll have to research it yourself. Look up the 2002 500 mile race at Fontana. It remains the fastest 500 in history, Jimmy Vasser was the winner in the Rahal Lola/Ford with shell sponsorship. DaMatta was flying too but his Toyota let go in spectacular fashion.
