I thought I read somewhere that the bottom line in the 1981 case was that Andretti didthe same thing (passing under yellow while blending in) that Unser did so they would both get penalized and the finishing order would bethe same.... (not taking sides here...)

The Indy 500's in question were 1972 with Mark Donohue. USAC was scoring Gary Bettenhausen as Donohues car and there was a difference in laps and Parnelli team thought that Donohue was behind.
