What happened to Verschueren on SS8?

Very nice and tricky event, my first BRC rally, unlucky, but I really liked it! Level of competition is quite high. Once more Loix showed his capabilities. I think as only one he drove with medium compound tires whole rally.

Safari rally with asphalt setup? :D
It was a nice rally! Not the best stages of the championship, but a nice rally anyway :)
Princen and Loix had a great fight all rally long. At the end, Loix pushed a bit more and won. But the small differences promise an interesting fight for the title :)
Verschueren was a lot faster then I thought, needed little time to adjust to the Fabia. For sure an outsider for the title! Was lucky when the rear left wheel bearing (or something else) broke at high speed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYjRNO_fkM4 . After this incident, he finished 4th.
Cherain (Fiesta R5) was a disappointment to me. Not quick enough to fight for the top 3 and retired at the end after a small mistake.
De Jongh (DS3 R5) drove a solid rally finishing 5th, nice addition to the championship!
Steveny (DS3 R5) crashed on the first stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TudX47rJS4
Serderidis (DS3 R5) on the second one after a compression, images are here already.
Finally, Van Rompuy (DS3 R5) retired with a broken rim and driveshaft, I don't know if he went off.
EDIT: forgot Benoit (Fiesta R5), says enough about his rally... Finished 9th overall behind 2 BMWs.
Vanwoensel was fastest with his Lancer WRC, but once again, the car was too fragile. He lost time and got a penalty, resulting in 3th.
Kenis drove a Mini WRC with RRC restrictor (yes, crazy Belgian rules). He had a good rally finishing 6th.
Next is Spa rally 18-19/03, nicer stages and probably better entry list too :)
Nice onboard with Princen:

Nikolay Gryazin entered Spa Rally, 2nd rally of the Belgian Championship, in a Peugeot (208 R2 I presume).
Anybody has an idea why? Tarmac testing?
Must be a 208T16
I read on the list: PEUGEOT RC1 WRC 1,6 T
http://www.sparally.com/sites/defaul...gage_BRC-3.pdf
...Yes, and under Gryazin is Henrard Michael with Renault Clio RC1 1,6T WRC :D. For sure it will be P208 R2. If Gryazin would want to drive 4WD in future, he would use Fabia R5 from SRT.
Just watched the Rd1 highlights on Motors TV... very predictable entry and winner...
Loix wins every year like Ogier in the WRC.
Nice coverage! I didn't found that predictable...Princen was close and the Lancer Evo guy manage to lead. It will be interesting to follow.
Portuguese first rally action tomorrow night, also in Motors TV. Any chance to see British RC highlights outside UK?
We'll have to wait and see for this year, the competition is stronger than ever (since the 90's maybe). Without the technical issues Van Woensel-Mitusbishi Lancer WRC would have won by the way. Also in the end Princen was only some 10s behind, it's not such a big gap... Last year Princen had a lot of bad luck, and retired many times, but he was always on the same pace of Loix (if not quicker). Last year we had a few very exciting events, like Wallonie, where 4 drivers could win until the last few stages (and that was after the retirement of Princen and Lefebvre, who were also fighting strong). In the East Belgian Rally we had 3 drivers who could win until the last stage (there was some 5s difference between 1st and 3rd), the difference between 1st and 2nd hadn't been bigger than 2s all day long. Loix retired there while being 4th, I think. So no, Loix isn't dominating in the way Ogier is in WRC. Loix is probably the most consistent, he is extremely fast, and drives the most reliable car. I also think Freddy could have his toughest Ypres ever this year, even without a proper ERC field (I doubt any ERC driver could fight for podium anyway, as long as not too many Belgian drivers get in trouble).
For a while, 10.8 seconds over a whole day, is still close for Belgian norms. Btw Both have gentlement co drivers, but the notes of Loix are way more precise and more on time then with Princen (makes a small difference in seconds too). Loix won't be so dominating like the last few years. Last year he got it already tough on some rallies, mostly PSA broke down then or his own car broke down and Kobus won the East Belgian Rally (decided on last stage!).
With Loix you have to remember also that he was development driver of Skoda R5, he done many, many kms with it, so he knows the car very well. Also knows the 2C team very good. And he is also development driver for Michelin, so knows tires very good, which also is an advantage (in Van Haspengouw he was using different tires than others and it worked well for him looks like).

Princen will certainly win a rally this year. Also Verschueren, Cherain and Kobus might win one.
Last year Princen had a lot of bad luck. He had to retire after day 1 in Ypres, being in front of Loix because he was ill. In Wallonie slightly hit a concreet block which caused retirement, while Loix had a huge off in a ditch with no consequences at all. Title fight could have been a lot closer last year!
Tomorrow night and saturday there's the Spa Rally, 2nd round of the Belgian championship. Live results should be found here: http://www.sparally.com/nl/node/44
Bob De Jong already crashed on shakedown... 11 R5 cars left, also Mini RRC (with WRC wing), 2 Fabia WRC's and a few GT's. Marc Duez is entering a Porsche 997 GT3 from Romain Dumas. Some good FWD cars as well, interesting entry is Gryazin with a 208 R2.

That is one heavy frontal impact ! :disturb:

Edit, nice compilation from shakedown which includes the footage of Cherain I posted earlier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYzoMGQc4-U
Does anyone know what happened to Cherain and Demarschalk? Nicely suprised by Bouche!
According to this:
http://rajdy.autoklub.pl/news/pojedy...ardenach,66779
Cherain withdrew after some problems with brakes and rear wheel. He's not on the same level as Loix and Princen anyway, is he?
I think Loix is going to win it. He has 23 seconds over Princen after SS10. Still 7 stages to go.
Very bad rally for Gryazin. He is 56th overall.
Gryazin continues, there was some mistake in the timing system when he was mentioned as retired for a while. He just set a great time in SS14 fastest of all FWD even ahead of crazy Hermann.
Looking at the results it's certainly not just a curious detail that Spa stages are close to Czech ones... 5 Škoda 4WD on start and all of them in top 8!
1. Loix (Fabia R5) 1:41:21,6
2. Princen (208 T16 R5) +39,9
3. Verschueren (Fabia R5) +2:31,5
4. Bouche (Fabia R5) +3:03,0
5. De Cecco (208 T16 R5) +3:33,2
6. Dilley (DS3 R5) +5:11,7
7. Allart (Fabia WRC) +5:43,4
8. Cunin (Fabia WRC) +8:48,0
9. Albert (Evo IX A8) +9:07,3
10. Martin (Evo IX A8) +9:19,1
Cherain (Fiesta R5), Demarschalk (DS3 R5) retired, De Jong (DS3 R5) crashed on shakedown.
