Portuguese Rally News

Rallye Vidreiro is the next round of the Portuguese championship. Fontes (DS3) is the front runner but Barros (Fiesta) is also very strong on Vidreiro’s fast tarmac roads and Skoda’s top drivers, Meireles and Campos, may (hopefully) also have a word. Like Andre already mentioned, there’s also the return of former champ Adruzilo Lopes, this time at the wheel of a 3.6 (unrestricted) 911.

According to reports, this was a high speed crash into a big tree. Crew was lucky to escape without a scratch and the Fabia proved to be an extremely safe rally car. Força Salvi, Força Babo, we’re waiting for you at next rally!

Fontes won again, leading from the first stage. On first day Barros and Campos give him some fight and on second Meireles managed to be his main competitor, always at a small distance. Adruzilo Lopes completed only one SS, out of top 5. Without Diogo Gago there, Gil Antunes (Clio T) won 2wd class, after a strong recovery from Paulo Neto (DS3).

Like André showed on TER’s thread, next round of Portuguese rally series it’s Rallye Vinho Madeira, one of Europe’s best tarmac rallys. Starting today, it’ll be a fantastic rally to follow (live TV by RTP Madeira), with lots of great national and regional drivers fighting for the win.

National title contenders Fontes (DS), Meireles (Fabia) and Campos (Fabia), alongside Moura (Fiesta), Magalhães (Fiesta) and local drivers Camacho (DS) and Nunes (Fiesta) are the favorites. Consani (DS), Costenaro (208) and Dumas (911) are also there, giving an international touch to this amazing event.

A fantastic first leg at Rallye Vinho Madeira: top 5 under 20s!

Magalhães leads since SS3 on his first outing in a Fiesta. Fontes was pretty close all day long but lost some time on the night stages. Local guys, Camacho and Nunes, profit from those last stages to move up on classification. Campos is still on the fight, but brakes and fuel tank issues slowed him a little bit. Meireles and Moura are out of the pace, with Vieira close to them. Dumas is the first RGT, being 9th overall. Pires (Evo X) leads N4 and Silva (Clio R3) is the best 2wd.

On the second to last stage, after the zero car, Bruno Magalhães had a close encounter with a big rock, and had a small off-road. He and his co-driver left the car and stopped the rally. Bruno said that the rock was planted, Madeira's fans said that was just a debacle. Certain is that the stage was cancelled, and on the last stage Bruno won the rally, José Pedro got a stage win and second place and Alexandre Camacho (the island driver) descended to third. Supposedly the rock was planted there by a Camacho fan.

Anyway, after the rally ended Bruno was given a 35 sec penalty and dropped to 4th, leaving José Pedro with the win, and both Camacho and Miguel Nunes that are Madeira's natural, with 2nd and 3rd.

Bruno it's appealing from the decision, but said that we will never be n RVM again.

If you want my take on the thing... well, planted or not, there was public near by, and a rock falling down makes noise. They could easily removed it or at least alerted. But, Bruno and Hugo did not proceed the right way stopping the rally, and then continuing the same rally as the car didn't have significant damage. So in the end, was a loose-loose stupid situation. I've been in RVM a few times and the rally is one of the most beautifull. The stages are well designed and the scenery it's jaw dropping. Problem is that the organisation it´s a bit... meh! They said earlier in the press conference that RVM don't want to be in the ERC, but sincerely, I do think as it is, they don't even deserve it.


P.S - Apparently there was a comissar that saw the rock being thrown to the road, but his report was not taken in account. Very good stuff... arghhhhhh :/

It is not an easy situation, from @TheFlyingTuga's writting also some contradictions :
- it was not a rock, from the camera looks like a stone
- if the public was standing some 10 meters away, they couldn't here the noise of stone falling
- why did Bruno act incorrectly? I would stop others also.
- penalty for Bruno? If he thinks that injustice happened to him, he must fight for his rights.
- if, I repeat IF, Camacho knows the background of this shameful act, he should be punished.
Anyway, I feel sorry for Bruno & Hugo, as they didn't have any chance to avoid this accident.
