Hardly? Guy was pushing for 9th last year, everybody saw that. Only his own mistakes took that away from him.
The turning up was for the manufacturers championship because they were flagging and he dropped a round in Poland he'd have made up for later on. A driver championship would've been a sideshow which, obviously, generates it's own chat.
Ogier was absolutely desperate after his crash in CER. Was it because he didn't care about his 9th title? Or because he felt sorry for Toyota? Yeah, nobody believes that.
A driver who IS (not was) a cut above everyone else, wouldn't bin it 3 times in a row, losing a golden chance to the title. On Pirelli + hybrid car, Ogier wasn't going to win another title. This year with Hankook and hybridless is a different story. He's retired from being a full time driver, but if there is a good chance, he will try to get the 9th title.
He's paid to do a job for Toyota, that's his motivation. I'm not saying he's faultless and after CER, one round to go, Toyota were behind Hyundai, he had failed them. This time last year before Finland, Toyota were behind Hyundai. This year they are 65 points ahead. Do Toyota need him in Finland this year? Elfyn and Kalle should have it covered. Let's find out Friday.
Ogier suffered last year after time out of the car. This year he's going well and the best thing he can do for Toyota and himself is to go all-in and drive every round.
And with Tanak back on form, it's better for Toyota to have Ogier to fight him and help either Evans or himself to take the WDC.
I don't believe that he does it only for Toyota. Ogier loves to win, he was and still would be very reluctant to give up positions to Toyota teammates.
Why was he so desperate after the crash in CER? Two options: either he realized he's out of the driver championship fight because of his crash, or he was sad because he costed Toyota valuable points for the manufacturer title. I don't think many will pick option two.
Well Ogier won last year in Finland, of course a lot of it was to do with the main contenders crashing out but I remember that he actually had very good pace on the event.
Game on! Ogier goes to Finland!
