It was very fast that part on dry tarmac (for example JML at 14:48).
You mean to cut pads with studs? No, sure not. Anyway what is on the photo was actually a solution developed by Michelin and it was commonly used by all teams in the IRC. In my opinion the main target was to make the footprint of the tyre as small as possible but to keep all studs.Quote:

Of course but You can't fulfill that if You cut also those only pads (with studs) which have always contact with the ground. If You make large holes between them and You rotate the tyre to a point that it touches ground in the cut area the new footprint is almost same as with tyre without any cuts but the working must be worse because there are no grooves between pads. Plus You would face enormous wear.
In the case actually used it works like a double very narrow tyre (with the large middle groove from cutting everything between stud-holding pads) but of course the amount of slush which it can cope with is limited by the depth of cuts.
