Sorry but You are wrong. In Monte 2013 only two WRC cars retired before last day (Neuville and Maurin). The year before it was three (Latvala, Maurin and Van Merksteijn). That is much less than what is normal in events with superally.

At these are moments, drivers really get nervous. It has happened many times and it will happen again. Another recent example was Loeb versus Hirvonen in Portugal 2011:

Because it is Monte and most drivers take a different approach to this tricky rally but apart from that I talking from spectator's point of view. To go thousands km and spend $$$ just not to see all drivers in last day is waste of time and money and I guess it is the same filling for team sponsors.

As I remember that rally he couldn't get close because of dust, it was nothing like we saw today with visibility at least 50m.

Sorry, I hadn't seen your message. I remember this one because I was at that stage hearing the Portuguese radio and I couldn't believe the commentator's words about Loeb's behaviour.
It's evident that on these situations on gravel rallies, the problem is that the driver who is in the dust has to assume an enormous risk to pass. On tarmac events, the problem to approach the car with problems doesn's exit. If the driver who is in front of you isn't a rival, the problem is even lower.
