Nico Hulkenberg, the veteran German driver known for his super-straightforward approach, has not shied away from voicing his concerns in recent weeks. Although he only got called back to F1 after a forced sabbatical, he’s been demanding fundamental changes within the Haas organization, especially following the extreme disappointing performance of the newly launched and totally hapless ‘B’-spec car.

“Gunther (Steiner) and the others in the management have to ask some serious questions and look at all areas,” Hulkenberg asserted. His demands are clear: “Does something need to change with the structure, personnel or something else?” Hulkenberg’s determination for improvement is palpable as he states, “I want to believe that it will happen in the coming weeks.”

In a marked contrast, Kevin Magnussen opts for a more measured tone. Speaking to Ekstra Bladet newspaper, a national daily, he expresses his reluctance to join Hulkenberg in the open criticism of their employer. “It doesn’t help the team at all to do that,” he insists, emphasizing the collective nature of the sport. “We all play a role and all have a responsibility.”

Kevin Magnussen took to social media to express frustration with his F1 team. Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen scolded the team's performance this season on social media while looking forward to next year, following a disastrous end to the year at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Magnussen tweeted: "So long, 2023. The only positive today is that it was the last race. We can close the book and look forward to next year. Thanks to the whole team for working so hard during the season. It's going to be a big winter for us to catch up, but I believe we can do it."

Nico Hulkenberg has sent a clear message to his Haas team, after enduring a tough season-finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A big package was introduced in the United States, but Hulkenberg ran the old-spec in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, feeling it was a better option to team-mate Kevin Magnussen's preference of the newer-spec.

"I don't think there is a huge difference between them, minor differences," Hulkenberg told media, including RacingNews365. "Last weekend, I felt actually the new package had an edge over the old package on a low downforce configuration. This weekend I felt quite okay, Kevin didn't feel so happy.

"They are so similar, but that's in itself obviously not good enough. An update is supposed to be better and fix some of your issues and unfortunately, that didn't happen." When asked if there is anything specific that needs to change over the winter break: "I don't know if it proved anything. We need to work hard because I want us to do better, we need to pick up our feet, do a better job.

Nico Hulkenberg admits Haas is limited by its close relationship with Ferrari but insists that is no excuse for the team’s poor car development during the 2023 Formula 1 season. While Hulkenberg accepts that Haas’ close ties with Ferrari limit its potential, the German highlights how the team underdelivered compared to previous years.

“For sure that has its limitations,” he said regarding the extent of the collaboration, which includes an office located in the Italian marque’s Maranello factory. “But this team has done far better than 10th in the past. It’s not realistic to say we’re going for second or third or something, but we should be challenging somewhere around sixth or seventh, for sure. And that’s where this year we’ve been a little bit behind the expectations.”

Pressed on if that’s something that can be changed with the VF-24, Hulkenberg issued: “We’re very linked to Ferrari so whatever they do, develop, find, next year, kind of carries on and is applicable to us. I don’t know, to be honest, at this point in time. TBC.”

“Whilst obviously the season sporting-wise is not satisfying and not what we wanted, far from it actually, still all the other positives outweigh the difficult Sundays and the lack of points.”

EXCLUSIVE: This could rev up the engines of those Formula One fans: CBS is in the early stages of developing a single-camera workplace comedy with Haas Racing team principal Guenther Steiner.

The project, which does not yet have a writer attached, will be set in the world of sports with a “Steineresque” boss at the head of the ensemble. Steiner will serve as a non-writing executive producer on the project. No studio is attached.

Steiner has become a fan favorite known for his outsized personality, thanks to his appearances on the Netflix docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Launched in 2019, the series is a collaboration between Netflix and Formula One and offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and races of the Formula One World Championship.

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner is to be involved in the production of a fictional comedy television show based on his antics in Netflix’s Drive to Survive, it has emerged.

Earlier this year, Steiner spoke of his surprise about his newfound rockstar status in an exclusive and wide-ranging interview with PlanetF1.com’s Thomas Maher. He said: “I never tried to be this, what I got to. When I started in 2016, I never tried to be this guy, where everybody knows my name and shouts my name. It’s a little bit weird to me.”

“I never tried to be it. But on the other side, I think it is good for Formula 1, not because of me, but because of the whole business growing because then we make it sustainable.”

It will be interesting to see just how many similarities there are between the work place comedy's on-screen boss and Steiner, and whether or not they choose to make the character quite as x-rated as the Haas boss.

To be fair to Sargeant, he coped with the increasing pressure well, and while there were some notable crashes that caused significant damage, such as in Japan, he demonstrated an upward curve on the data that ultimately yielded a first point, on home soil. That was the first point scored in F1 by an American for 30 years.

From there, he seemed to grow in confidence, the 22-year-old peaking with a brilliant seventh in qualifying for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Though he failed to turn that into points, sources say internal data showed he was closing the gap to Albon in terms of race pace.

Ultimately, that’s what the team had asked him to do – and Sargeant proved that he was able to withstand the massive pressure that comes with competing in Formula 1.

The data makes it inescapably clear just how tough a season Logan Sargeant had on his Formula 1 debut with Williams in 2023. Nonetheless, he had a difficult first year in the world championship, and the numbers below make grim reading. Not once did he out-qualify his team mate Alexander Albon, nor take the chequered flag ahead of him on merit.

However Sargeant did show genuine potential. His race pace was often reasonable, though hamstrung by poor starting positions. Although his qualifying was clearly not on par with Albon’s, he got close at times, and showed potential to do better when he didn’t transgress track limits – as at the season finale – or crash. He also showed improvement in the later part of the season, with his Las Vegas performance to back up Albon with a Q3 appearance in qualifying an example of that.

The upshot of that was he contributed only a single point to Williams’ haul at the end of the year. Had AlphaTauri pipped them to seventh in the championship, which was a serious threat, the points lost by Sargeant would have been a significant factor. He played his role in the finale by containing Daniel Ricciardo and thwarting his bid to reach the top 10.

Logan Sargeant has had an F1 rookie season that can be most charitably described as "trying" - with a 1-27 points score relative to Williams team-mate Alex Albon, no qualifying triumphs over the ex-Red Bull driver and a series of errors that really tested the patience of team boss James Vowles.

Vowles and Williams have always leaned towards keeping Sargeant for another year… The question is - did Sargeant actually give a good enough reason? As widely expected, Williams have finally confirmed that they’ll be retaining Logan Sargeant for the 2024 season, despite a turbulent rookie season.

For the first time in Formula 1 history, all of the drivers who participated in the final round of the 2023 season will be on the grid at the 2024 season-opener, following Sargeant’s renewal.

Whilst it was expected that Sargeant would be retained for a sophomore campaign, it was far from a guarantee, given how much he struggled for the bulk of 2023.

Sargeant’s rookie campaign was a very difficult one, as the American driver took a considerable amount of time to settle into the sport. This was highlighted by his tendency to crash, with Williams having spent £3.4 million this year repairing his car.

Formula 1 Constructors’ Champions Red Bull led the way in prize money earnings for the 2023 campaign, receiving an estimated $140 million. F1 is many things; sport, entertainment and business and there is often an overlap between all three affecting any decision made in the series.

Having scored more than double the points of second in the Constructors’ Standings (Red Bull finished with 860 points, Mercedes finished with 409 points), Red Bull’s estimated earnings see the team essentially recoup the entirety of cost cap spending for 2023, which stood at $135 million for the season.

Mercedes clinched second in the standings on the final day of the 2023 season in Abu Dhabi, rewarding the Brackley squad an estimated $131 million in prize money. Ferrari, however, was pipped by Mercedes to the tune of three points and thus only received an estimated $122 million slice of the prize pot.

Haas team boss Guenther Steiner admitted they “went to hell quick” in F1 2023 as a brick wall was hit in the wind tunnel, prompting their concept change. Put to him that F1 2023 was the “season from hell” for Haas, Steiner told Channel 4: “Yeah, or close to hell.”

“Beginning of the year was not too bad, but then we went to hell pretty quick. We started off and I was confident that we can keep on making improvements, but we didn’t find any performance in the car. We went to the wind tunnel and couldn’t find anything.”

“And then at some stage we decided to change concept of the car because there was nothing left in it. There was no juice left in that concept. We went in the wind tunnel and came out of the wind tunnel with the same downforce.”

Haas finished last in the Constructors' Championship for the second time in three seasons, but an alarming slump in performance could not be rectified as frustrations spilled over. The car, in both old and new specifications, had a ferocious appetite for Pirelli tyres with the team unable to get to the root cause of the mechanical problems causing it despite the vast upgrade in Austin.

For Las Vegas, Hulkenberg even reverted to the old spec as he felt more comfortable in it while Magnussen preserved with the updated car. Teams will sometimes run an old and new spec to back-to-back them over a practice session, but it is rare to do over multiple Grand Prix weekends. Frustrations, particularly from Hulkenberg boiled over towards the end of a season in which Haas failed to find solutions and was simply left behind.

Hulkenberg banked nine points across the season to Magnussen's three, with exactly half of Haas's 12 points coming from Hulkenberg's seventh place in Australia. But it was in qualifying where the German shone, with some outstanding laps to beat Magnussen 15-7 over the course of the season. …after those outstanding qualifying performances (THEY) were rewarded with simply going backwards in races…

Alonso's renaissance: Even at pre-season testing in Bahrain, it became increasingly evident that Red Bull had a very fast car, and the script for the season had almost been written already, with some pundits already suggesting they could be on their way to a record-breaking season.

Almost 15% of season's DNFs at Australian GP: The third race of the season provided us with one of the most dramatic races of the whole 2023 calendar. There were two safety cars, three red flags and EIGHT drivers unable to finish the race (almost 15% of the overall number of DNF's in 2023), before Verstappen managed to claim victory in controversial circumstances.

1200 Austrian GP track limits infringements: The regulations have often provided unnecessary complexity to qualifying sessions and races, none less so than at the Austrian GP. Max Verstappen has been officially crowned 2023 F1 champion after being presented with the world drivers’ trophy at the FIA’s end of season prize-giving gala in Baku. Speaking ahead of the trophy presentation, Verstappen reflected on the season: “This season, we’ve won a lot as a team, but it's also been really enjoyable to work with everyone inside the team.”

Max Verstappen admitted an emotional realisation as he finally got his hands on his third Formula 1 world championship trophy. He was helped to do that by the best-in-class RB19 that he had to drive and tamed so well. And as he spoke after collecting his trophy he expressed his regret that he will never competitively drive that outstanding machine again.

The 26-year-old said: "Of course, throughout the year we were on a great roll and we wanted to perform every single time, at every single race weekend. I think it did hit me a little bit more once I was standing on the podium at the end in Abu Dhabi - you realise the season is over, you don't get to drive this car anymore, unfortunately.

"But, yeah, it's been incredible. And great fun as well to work with everyone. Of course, we all want to win and do the best we can. But when you're travelling around so much all over the world, you want to do it with a great group of people and we definitely have that at Red Bull. I'm extremely proud of what we have achieved this year, but of course I hope it doesn't stop here."

Which team stood out from the rest in the battle of the pit stops during the 2023 season? Red Bull surprisingly does not come out on top! Pit stops in Formula 1 have become a competition of their own in recent years, as teams push the boundaries to prevent the minimum amount of time lost.

Sometimes it can go wrong, like Alpine's out of control spiral which led to Esteban Ocon being penalised twice during the Bahrain Grand Prix. But when they get it right, it can be the difference between winning or losing a race.

Since the introduction of 18-inch wheels in 2022, it was anticipated that pit stops would be slower due to the wider and heavier 42kg tyres. However, this year saw some of the quickest pit stops on record in F1 as teams have perfected how to choreograph changing a full set of tyres.

Ferrari endured another difficult Formula 1 campaign as it slipped to third place in the Constructors' Championship after entering the year hopeful of a title fight. Ferrari entered the 2023 Formula 1 campaign hopeful of contending for a World Championship. The Italian squad took four race wins during the 2022 campaign and despite failing to live up to its early-year champion potential, it was a welcome boost following a troubling span of seasons.

Entering the campaign with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz for the third consecutive year, Ferrari immediately started on the back foot with Leclerc retiring at the opening round from Bahrain with engine woes. A further retirement would follow in Australia for the Monegasque driver but as he has so often done during his tenure in F1, he let his speed shine through by taking five pole positions during the campaign, while Sainz took two.

For the most part, the core pace of the Ferrari car which was aggressive with its tyres and unpredictable through corners saw it drop back on race day, beaten by the dominant RB19 built by Red Bull. A singular off weekend for the World Champions fell into the hands of Ferrari, however, as Sainz pounced on the opportunity that was presented his way in Singapore to take the victory, marking the only time that Red Bull was defeated this year.

"We had different momentum during the season," Vasseur told media including RacingNews365. "It is true that Carlos was very, very strong after the summer break, and Charles was flying in the last six or seven events, but I think overall the evolution that we had in the team was a good one.”

Sergio Perez: The decisive moment of the entire season came on Lap 48 in Miami when Sergio Perez was passed for the lead by Max Verstappen. Perez should have won this race from pole, with Verstappen only ninth on the grid. But the Mexican failed to clear off into the lead, and a strong stint from Verstappen left him only a handful of seconds behind after his final pit-stop. The rest was inevitable.

George Russell: This was a classic case of second-season syndrome for George Russell at Mercedes. There was nothing drastically wrong with his season, and he consistently brought home the best result the car was capable of, with few high-profile blunders, except in Canada and Singapore when he slapped the wall that led to retirements and cost podiums. In the end, eighth and 175 points to third and 234 for Lewis Hamilton is a vast gap of 59 points in what was a season far from Hamilton's best.

Zhou Guanyu: All things considered, Zhou Guanyu probably did enough to earn a third season alongside Valtteri Bottas at Sauber.
Logan Sargeant: There is pace in Logan Sargeant, and he does have all the ingredients to become a respectable Grand Prix driver, but he must start piecing it together on a regular basis for 2024.

James Allison has revealed Mercedes were aware as early as Bahrain that their W14 was “not even close to matching” the pace they’d expected from the car. Tech boss Allison, who returned to the position when Mike Elliott was moved to the chief technical officer role, revealed Mercedes knew early on in 2023 that the W14 was not the car they’d hoped for.

“I think clearly from early on in the year, from winter testing, the first race, it was pretty clear that we had not even come close to matching what we’d hoped for with the car,” he told Sky Sports. “And that was, you know, no fun for anyone here.”

“But our job is to try and digest where you’re at rather than where you might have hoped you were at. And the story of this season has been a team that has tried to do the very best with where we’d started and honestly the very best outcome we could have had with where we started was coming P2. It is a source of great satisfaction to all of us that that’s what we managed to do.”

Ferrari's chassis technical director Enrico Cardile has given an in-depth explanation of why the team hit a development plateau with its 2023 Formula 1 car. The SF-23 again proved promising over one lap but struggled from wild aerodynamic inconsistencies that made it struggle over a race stint, especially on hot, high-downforce circuits.

Chassis chief Cardile explained the team soon found the SF-23's chassis a limiting factor of much more it could achieve.
"The 2023 car has been developed in continuity with the 2022 car, trying to improve some limitations of the previous car," Cardile told select media, including Motorsport.com.

"All in all, our goal has been achieved because the car on track behaved exactly how it has been developed. The problem was that soon we realised that the direction we took was not the most profitable, so we reviewed internally our targets for the aero development.”

It's rare that a driver ranking at the end of the Formula 1 season does not need to take into account the World Champion. For example, in both 2014 and 2016, Daniel Ricciardo was arguably the best driver on the grid, but it was Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, respectively who walked away with the crown.

In 2023, pretty much from the Miami Grand Prix, it was nailed that Max Verstappen would win the title and it was just a case of when not if. But to do so in the fashion he did was extraordinary and predictably, all of the RacingNews365 team who voted put him top.

Our method for the rankings was to list our top 10 drivers, and award them points based on the F1 points system in the 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 style. We brought you Part 1 and places 10 through six yesterday, which is available here.

The second season of the current regulation set brought with it a year of milestones and new records, most of them courtesy of Max Verstappen and Red Bull. But while the Red Bull RB19 was the best car on the grid, who were the best drivers?

The championship standings give us one answer but it does not account for fluctuating form, unreliability, or other incidents. And so Speedcafe’s F1 team of Mat Coch and Ian Parkes have compiled their run down of the top 10 F1 drivers of 2023.

There is a scope with a season review special of Winners and Losers to expand and select maybe five winners to include in this first part of the analysis. But sticking to the traditional three winners as is normally (except in outstanding circumstances) the case helps raise the bar and threshold to who actually qualifies to be a winner.

While the overall championship storyline was basically over after Lap 48 in Miami and the remainder of the year was Max Verstappen putting 16 further cherries on top of his cake, elsewhere there was some great on-track battles, controversy and proof to the big teams that the gap between them and the upper midfield is closing bit by bit.

Speaking to media including PlanetF1.com in reflection on his F1 2023 campaign, Alonso spoke of how this was his strongest season yet performance wise, but his top five outings did not exclusively feature podium finishes.

A P9 at the Italian Grand Prix may not sound impressive, but Alonso said it was considering Aston Martin had the second-slowest car on the grid at best that weekend. “I’m happy with the personal performance,” he said.

“I think together with 2012 it’s the best season for me. Personally, I rate the best season in my driving and I was happy with everything, I was motivated, I was fit, I was performing in difficult conditions sometimes.

In Formula 1, team radios primarily serve as a means of communicating critical information about strategy and race pace — but under each message could be an entirely different meaning.

Strategy planning: Throughout the 2023 season, one driver utilized team radio to regularly plot strategy with his team during races.
Petitioning for penalties: With all of F1’s rules and regulations, many drivers may feel that race stewards need a little extra help noting penalty-worthy incidents.

Establishing a team hierarchy: In F1 teams like Ferrari, there can be an insistence that there is no hierarchy regarding the drivers. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, Jr., are considered on equal terms, with neither driver being considered a number one or number two.
Offering entertaining commentary: While most drivers save their radio messages for the important goings-on of a race, some drivers are able to be a little more creative.

Carlos Sainz achieved his first Formula One victory last year with Ferrari after having switched teams and leaving McLaren in the past. He partnered with Charles Leclerc, who since joining F1 has been deemed a future world champion. But in 2023, Sainz was able to achieve what his teammate couldn’t and despite finishing lower in the standings, one could argue Sainz had the better year.

Over the course of 22 rounds – Round 6 having been cancelled – Sainz scored 200 points and finished P8 in the Drivers’ Championship, only six points behind his teammate. However, whilst he has had three DNFs and some difficulties along the way, 2023 has been a positive year for the Ferrari driver.

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack has been so impressed with how much driver Lance Stroll impressed during the 2023 Formula 1 season. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso helped the British team finish fifth in the Constructors’ Championship as they made big strides last winter in their development.

Speaking to the team’s official website, Mike Krack was praising the Canadian driver who was left in his teammate’s shadow for much of the season. Signing Fernando Alonso last winter was a serious coup and he immediately worked on improving the team. His experience was vital and the Spaniard admitted he couldn’t believe how fast the car was when pre-season testing began.

Alonso’s six podium finishes in the first eight races surprised everyone, while Stroll delivered some decent performances too. However, when Aston Martin’s competitors started to make up some ground on them, it was the 25-year-old who suffered the most. But in the final few races of the 2023 season, Stroll’s performances really picked up and Krack was impressed with the improvement he showed.

The most impressive thing about him (Max Verstappen) is that he never rested on his laurels and no matter what the result, he pushed to do better the next time he sat in the car. For Red Bull, 2023 was a continuation of 2022. Only it was even more dominant, mainly because what should have been its main rivals, Mercedes and Ferrari, both fell away as opposed to improving. Ferrari did fight back, but it was too little too late - and Mercedes more or less stood still.

Red Bull’s main competition early on came from Aston Martin, which made a major step in performance for the first half of the season. As Aston Martin fell away, so McLaren came alive, but neither was able to keep Verstappen honest. The Red Bull RB19 was a car for every occasion - good over one lap, brilliant over race stints. Be it wet, dry, windy or whatever, Verstappen had the confidence to extract the maximum from the machinery.

The statistics are impressive. As usual, I’ve converted the fastest single lap for each driver into a percentage of the outright fastest lap of each weekend. This is then averaged out over the whole 22-race season, meaning if you were quickest every single weekend your ‘supertime’ would be 100.000%. We've then created tables covering full-season performance and also focusing only on the final six races, showing the trend heading towards 2024.

The Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Grand Prix 2023 has been heavily acclaimed in the international motorsports community, and has been hailed as the "Best Race" of the season. No, it's not because Red Bull didn't win.

Sky Sports, ESPN, Metro, and online racing news site WTF1 have named Singapore the "Best Race" of 2023 "We are not saying this because it's the only one Red Bull didn't win, it was genuinely a thriller to the end as Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton had a big four-way scrap for the lead in the closing stages," Sky Sports reported.

Meanwhile, Motorsport Magazine has nominated the F1 night race for its own accolade. "The only race Red Bull didn’t win came to a nail-biting end as leader Carlos Sainz fended off two snarling Mercedes — by slowing down, which gave second-placed Lando Norris DRS assistance to defend," the magazine wrote.

Toto Wolff believes the United States Grand Prix was the best race of the 2023 F1 season for Mercedes, despite Lewis Hamilton’s disqualification. Hamilton finished second behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the Circuit of the Americas in October but was later excluded for excessive wear on the plank of his Mercedes car.

Asked to pick what he thought was Mercedes’ best race of the 2023 season, Wolff replied: “This might sound strange, because we got disqualified, but Austin! We brought an upgrade package that worked, the car was performing well, and we were hunting down the leader. You could say, ‘well, you were disqualified for a car that was too low’, but the genuine performance was there and that was an enjoyable weekend.”

Since the 2022 season, HRC has supported Red Bull Powertrains at the request of the Red Bull Group. 23 rounds, the most in F1 history, were scheduled for the 2023 season, in which HRC supported four cars from two teams, Oracle Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri.

Oracle Red Bull Racing was represented by defending champion Max Verstappen in pursuit of his third consecutive title, and Sergio Perez in his third year with the team. Scuderia AlphaTauri was represented by Yuki Tsunoda, a Japanese driver in his third year in the sport, and newcomer to the team Nyck de Vries.

F1 red flags: Rising trend of race stoppages continues in 2023

Red flags are used in Formula 1 when race control deems that conditions on track are too poor to resume racing within a short period of time - a trend that has been on the rise in recent years. The first red flag of the year was issued on lap eight of the Australian Grand Prix when Alex Albon crashed while running inside the points. In fact, it was the first of three red flags to be deployed that race, the most for a single Grand Prix in F1 history.

A second red flag of the Grand Prix was deployed on lap 55 when Kevin Magnussen crashed just a handful of laps before the end. At the restart, chaos unfolded at the first corner when Fernando Alonso was spun around by Carlos Sainz, while the two Alpine drivers of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly collided and sustained terminal damage. The fourth red flag of the year came at the Dutch Grand Prix when torrential rain hit the circuit toward the end of the race, causing Zhou Guanyu to aquaplane off the track and into the barrier.

The final two race stoppages of the year came at back-to-back races. Magnussen suffered a high-speed crash in Mexico City, with the barriers needing repairing before the event was resumed. At the following round in Brazil, Albon and Magnussen collided on the run to the first corner on the opening lap to cause the final red flag of the year, with more barrier repairs required while debris was also cleaned from the track.

F1 Season Review: Mercedes suffered from another underwhelming season in 2023

Coming into 2023, Mercedes were reeling from a third-place finish in 2022 after a year of issues, mainly with porpoising. However, last year the Silver Arrows did clinch a race win with George Russell in Sao Paulo. 2023 saw the W14 with a different sidepod design compared to the previous year. After Red Bull’s demonstration in pre-season testing and then in the first race, it was clear from the start that Mercedes wouldn’t be fighting the Milton-Keynes outfit this year.

Instead, Mercedes battled Ferrari all season long and eventually beat them to P2 in the Constructors’ Championship. Mercedes finished the year with 409 points with Ferrari only three points behind on 406. It was a close battle between the two teams, but despite being runners-up, 2023 wasn’t a great season for Mercedes in terms of looking ahead.

The breaking of records as Max Verstappen waltzed to 19 grand prix wins in one season in the second year of the ‘ground effect’ regulations was not how most would have called it a year ago. After Red Bull won all but five GPs in 2022, the natural assumption was that the second year of these tunnel-floored cars would lead to its advantage being reduced.

Well, pretty much everyone did make progress. It’s just that Red Bull made more. Only a couple of teams had even begun to understand the fundamentals of what made the ’22 Red Bull dominant. That little detail is what was at the heart of the ’23 car’s increased advantage as it took the basic foundation that was so right – and added forever more downforce to it. The rightness of that concept back in ’22 was to do with Newey.

He feeds into the technical group including also technical director Pierre Wache and aero chief Enrico Balbo. But he will tell you he doesn’t ever direct that team of gifted people, would never say ‘we’re going this way, follow me’. But he seems to have an intuitive understanding of the hierarchy of importance of performance factors, especially when a new set of regulations come into force and mix all those variables up. Historically, that is where he gets the jump on everyone else.

Former Formula 1 race winner David Coulthard was 'mindblown' after being able to take the dominant RB19 for a spin around Silverstone. The car has recently been described by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner as the 'most successful F1 car in history', after Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez claimed 21 of the 22 race victories in 2023.

Coulthard could have won title in RB19: Taking the car on a hot lap around Silverstone for Red Bull's YouTube channel, the Scotsman was blown away by the RB19's speed. "Okay, well, I'm wide awake now," Coulthard proclaimed after the lap. What an experience, so smooth!"

"I know the actual drivers complain that it feels quite cumbersome at low speeds but, for a 52-year-old, it felt nimble. Later on, he quipped: "Maybe even I could have won the title in this car," before saying, "What are you laughing at? I used to be good!" As he crossed the line, Coulthard remarked: "What a privilege. What an honour. This is a car of its generation. It's a mindblowing machine."

The dominance of Red Bull’s RB19 was record-breaking in Formula 1, with only McLaren’s MP4-4 from 1988 achieving anywhere near its win ratio.

But while both cars missed out on clean sweeps by just one victory in their respective campaigns, what is perhaps most impressive is that Red Bull had to do that against the backdrop of 22 events rather than just 16. Rather than being an all-new design, the RB19 was an evolution of the RB18, because standing still in F1 is not an option.

Daniel Ricciardo has said that the Red Bull RB19 still has the 'DNA' of the car he remembers driving during his initial stint with the team, which made testing the car much easier for him. Recently dubbed the 'most successful F1 car in history', the RB19's plaudits come fresh on the heels of a remarkable season where Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez clinched a staggering 21 out of 22 race victories in the year 2023.

"What made the test go really well for me is that, yes, the cars have evolved and changed so much, but there was part of its DNA, which was still what I remembered and still what I really liked in a race car," Ricciardo told Beyond The Grid. "The part I love most about the Red Bull car is that I can just drive it the way I want to drive it. It doesn't really explain what's great about the car, but it explains why I love it.”

Seven-time F1 grand prix winner René Arnoux said on-board footage shows Max Verstappen “draws a clean line through the corner” with the Red Bull RB19, a kind of stability and control which rivals do not enjoy. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Renault and Ferrari F1 driver Arnoux said a crucial factor in Verstappen’s dominance over the competition can be uncovered by studying on-board footage of the Red Bull driver.

Arnoux explained that the Red Bull RB19’s stability allowed Verstappen to “draw a clean line through the corner”, while his competitors were always making corrections with the wheel in comparison. “Max is a fabulous driver,” Arnoux began. “Take a look at the on-board camera footage. Max Verstappen: His ability to remain consistent paired with an Adrian Newey masterpiece allowed Verstappen to claim the driver’s title as early as October – on Saturday’s sprint race in Qatar. The only race he did not finish on the podium was Singapore, when the Red Bull did not have the pace it had at every other circuit. Verstappen finished the season with 575 – a new record that will be tough to beat.
Lewis Hamilton: For Lewis Hamilton to finish the season in P3 behind both Red Bulls claiming the top spot as best of the rest in an unpredictable car was a legendary statement by the 38-year-old.

Oscar Piastri: Oscar Piastri did not earn the Rookie of The Year award at the FIA prize-giving gala for nothing. The McLaren driver drove an impressive campaign in his first-ever Formula One season.
Alex Albon: Williams have had their best season in two decades. James Vowles has done an incredible job in his first season as team principal, but he must have many thanks to Alex Albon.

Fernando Alonso: Fernando Alonso is a driver that is proving that age is truly just a number. At the age of 42, he is still performing at a high level, and better than some of his younger counterparts, including his teammate Lance Stroll.
Liam Lawson: Liam Lawson might have only made 5 appearances in the 2023 season, but his short stint was quite impressive for a rookie who was unexpectedly thrown into an F1 seat.

F1 seemed to bounce from one controversy to the next across the 2023 season all the while Red Bull and Max Verstappen dominated. The 26-year-old enjoyed the most successful year any Formula 1 driver has ever achieved with 19 wins from 22 races plus a record 575 points.

A water valve cover destroyed Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari in FP1 at the Las Vegas GP: F1’s extravagant return to Nevada started in controversial fashion as a loose water valve cover destroyed Sainz’s Ferrari after the opening eight minutes in FP1.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc got disqualified from the United States GP: Stewards would disqualify Hamilton from his P2 finish at COTA after the race due to excessive wear to his W14’s floor. Ferrari also saw the stewards disqualify Leclerc from his P6 finish at the US GP for the same reason.

Nine drivers received track limit infringement penalties at the Austrian GP: Formula 1 left the Austrian GP in July with egg on the series’ face after a controversial race littered with track limit infringements.
Controversy surrounded Andretti’s bid to join the Formula 1 grid in 2023: Michael Andretti, the son of 1978 F1 champion Mario Andretti, has continually pushed to join the travelling circus in recent years. But the field have kept blocking his bid.

Brundle reveals 'bizarre' choice for top F1 race in 2023

Martin Brundle admits the most rollercoaster weekend of the F1 season ended up providing his favourite race. The Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend began disastrously after a loose drain cover on the street circuit led to a dangerous accident for Carlos Sainz, ending FP1 after just eight minutes.

"Bizarrely, I think it was Las Vegas," said the legendary pundit. "It didn't start well, but you know 82 in-race passes, six lead changes. And it was sort of Monza speeds, but it looked like almost on a track with the same grip as intermediates when it had been raining a little bit. So to see them grappling with the cars, then the super high speed stuff, the late breaking and all the craziness that went on.”

Max Verstappen has won another end-of-season accolade in recognition of his dominant 2023 campaign which secured him his third consecutive F1 drivers championship.

The Red Bull driver had already been voted ‘Driver of the Year’ by his fellow F1 drivers (with the exception of Lewis Hamilton, who didn't take part in the vote) and topped F1i's Driver Ratings of the year.

And now Verstappen is the top choice of F1 team principals conducted by the official Formula1.com website which awarded drivers scores based on the current F1 points system, the top driver earning 25 points down to one for 10th.

Those casting votes were Alessandro Alunni Bravi, Bruno Famin, Christian Horner, Mike Krack, Guenther Steiner, Andrea Stella, Franz Tost, Fred Vasseur, James Vowles and Toto Wolff.

For Edd Straw, it's a 3.30am revelation in Las Vegas that's lodged in his mind. The Las Vegas Grand Prix was always likely to be, for better or worse, the most memorable race weekend of the 2023 Formula 1 season. But while for many watching the sight of Carlos Sainz clouting a utility cover early in free practice will spring to mind, for me it was a moment later in the day that encapsulated the unique absurdity of the race weekend.

The combination of the lengthy delay and the uncertainty about free practice happening at all, then the shameful moment when those fans who did hang around were sent home shortly before the cars did run again, meant FP2 was already a storied session when it kicked off at 2.30am local time.

Zhou Guanyu admits what he heard about Sergio Perez and F1 rival was ‘crazy’ in 2023

Sauber star Zhou Guanyu admits he found rumours of Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso replacing Red Bull’s Sergio Perez following the Mexico City Grand Prix ‘crazy’. The rumour mill was in full flow after the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez round at the end of October. Perez produced another disappointing weekend at his home event. The Red Bull driver failed to finish even the first lap after causing a collision at Turn 1 with Charles Leclerc.

“People were saying Sergio would retire in the Mexico GP but nothing goes on,” Zhou told Autosport. “It is the rumours of Fernando swapping his seat [to join Red Bull]. That’s crazy. I actually understand more about the media, especially when you have other drivers or from the medias of that country making rumours, makes you worry. But from the inside out, you know what’s going on. You are quite easy understanding about them.”

The driver who pulled off the biggest climb through the field in 2023 had more than a little luck on his side. Sergio Perez’s climb from last on the grid to fifth at the chequered flag in the Australian Grand Prix hung on a contentious decision by the race director about the restart order before the field took the chequered flag behind the Safety Car.

While the Red Bull drivers enjoyed a significant advantage when it came to charging through the field, several surprising names from the midfield appear among the drivers who made the best recovery drives of the year.
