Here's another interesting, fun app for historical types: Streetmuseum Londinium. It directs users to locations around Roman London. As you stand in modern day London, the app gives details about your location as it would have been in ancient Londinium. Key locations include the amphitheater and the Temple Mithras, as well as a map of ancient Londinium superimposed on a map of modern London.
Right now probably wouldn't be the best time to be wandering around London, with an iPhone in one hand and a soft drink in the other, searching for ancient locations. But just browsing through this app really makes me want to visit London some day.
These kinds of apps should be great for history buffs and school kids.

Indeed. That kind of self guided tour is great. I've had experience of that type of thing at some English Heritage sites

So I guess we won't be discussing any WebOS apps. :( Real shame too. Years ago (2003 or so) I was something of an admirer of the Palm Treo. I never cared for the overhyped Blackberry, and even refused to carry one mandated by a former company. But I liked the Treo - even though I never owned one. I was really hoping that HP would let what was left of the Palm team do what they used to do well: create good, solid, innovative software without all the huff & puff. But upon learning that the Palm team was basically no more, I guess this was inevitable.
HP finally just realized what IBM realized years ago: without a higher margin business to compliment it, the WinTel PC business is a sunset business at worst, and a commodity business at best. With margins of roughly 5%, I guess HP decided to cut its losses and go charging into the night. Unless Dell gets its mobile strategy right, I figure they'll be next. They've been in a tail spin since the late 90's so it wouldn't surprise me.
