Interesting start, the Toyota's seem genuinely fast and it looks like there are good chances the championship will tighten up.
stages 1-7

is it raining at stages?
all crews with 5 soft compounds.
Full onboard of Ogier from SS4 is now on WRC+.
Does not really look like he had clear damage from the jump, more like just a mistake at that corner. EDIT: Or the suspension first failed in the corner.
Latvala has changed front transmission on service
Fri 15:05 - Weather update
Grey skies and heavy rain falling at the stage end of SS8.
Maybe first run of Lankamaa will show at wrc+ live
Good time from Breen. Interesting how hard he push?
Gilsoul
"I had not set a prognosis, but I was more focused on our main objective: to lead Sébastien Ogier, he had a worry, but it is true that our car does not allow us to go faster. We can make a correction for this second part of the day, and for a co-driver, the sensations are increased tenfold in Finland, sometimes you have to take two notes in advance because it comes so fast. Cars that are monsters. I am delighted, "said Nicolas Gilsoul, co-driver of Neuville.
"We have to see the number of Finnish drivers in front of us, they want to show everything on a rally and we want to show everything about a season."
Impossible not to speak again about the race of the morning: the exit of Sébastien Ogier. "It does not help to go super fast in a special way, in my opinion, there is a nice thing to do but we have to go back in the points, that's why we have to fine-tune the car So that it gives us confidence. "" Theoretically, the rain can help us, we must not panic, "concluded Gilsoul without panic.
Toyota extra fast in wet. Just like in Poland.
Might have something to do with having more aero-grip at high speeds than others.
1-2-3 for Toyota on this one atm !
Ha ! Suninen beats all the Toyota's. :D
4 Finnish guys at the top of a stage in Finland. Has that ever happened before? :D
Impressive performance of the Toyotas
Mäkinen will receive some calls after the weekend concerning 2018 driver lineup
Anyone else struggling to listen to rally radio using an iPhone or iPad? Any idvice? Thanks.
Really surprised at the lack of pace of Neuville & Hyundai's - slowest of all the WRC's today. They looked so good on the SD video's. Any theories ?
And sadly Paddon is out.
Reading Neuville's quotes he seems to have started with the mindset of not being able to go for the win, and then just settling for top 5 after Ogier went out.
Not the attitude of a champion IMO.
Generally this year Hyundai's strength has been "agility" in slow-medium speed corners and narrow roads and how easy they were to drive in medium-fast corners. They don't seem to have the best top speed. (Ford seems to lead there ahead of Toyota). In Finland the road is so wide that other cars don't have so much issues with controlling the cars (as opposite to Poland which is narrow). This is also why Citroen is doing ok.
Then it's the drivers:
Neuville has never done extremely well in Finland, has bad road position (specially now without Ogier in front) which he is not used to. Also does not want to risk crashing when Ogier is out and relies a bit more on mistakes of the ones in front.
Sordo again has not done well in the later years here.
Paddon was fast (maybe also due to road position), but seems like he was pushing too much (as we have seen at least 2 big moments on vid).
Off course, all this is just speculation. But that's what you asked for ;)
Neuville has won three rallies this year, Ogier has won two...
It's only Friday afternoon, let's wait and see where Neuville is on Sunday morning.
No I mean being smart and choosing your battles. Ogier and Loeb had plenty rallies they accepted to finish on the podium when they couldn't win. I think Neuville realizes both he and the car and his road position means he does not have the best chance here, plus it's a difficult rally where mistakes are costly. So he is playing the long game on this one, no shame in that.
fuck I am on a ferry back to Athens and signal is cutting.
Tanak not push. Seems to be he didn't wont get back into top10 :/
Looks like a "champion illness" so early. Win or nothing.
Fri 16:24 - Weather update
The rain has stopped. The sun is out.
Fri 16:24 - SS9: Latvala
"Slippery now, but not too dramatic. I have to be very focused all the time. I know I need to fight with Esapekka, but I'm in a difficult [road] position here. I know the grip will improve for him."
