Bonus points for naming any other car! ;)
Got me on this one, although the first car looks again McLaren-ish, mid-70's I'd say, I don't know why we'd see the USAC Champ dirt/sprint type rigs on the same track...
I figure the days of seeing front engined rigs compete against RE cars, ala Indianapolis Raceway Park road course or Milwaukee, were pretty much over by the time McLarens came along.
Obviously, this image is a well-done Photoshop forgery! ;)
McLaren is correct. As Phoenixent would say, "Keep Digging!" :)
That looks likethe Red Roof Inns McLaren that Vern Schuppan drove - How about Pocono in 1980 where they started some dirt track cars atthe USAC race to fill the field.....
Actually, it is Pocono i 1981 with Schuppan in a McLarne Cosworth....
To think, they used dirt cars to fill the field but they still had 21 (by my count) "real" indycars in the field... Perhaps the IRL and OWRS can leanr from this can you imagine a WoO car at Long Beach??? :)
That's it! They were embarrassed to only have 21 cars so 8 Silver Crown cars filled out the field to make it a more respectable 29. It would prove to be AJ Foyt's last win as a driver. THis was back during the original "split", and Tom Sneva, Vern Schuppan, and Geoff Brabham "crossed the picket line" so to speak. It seems to have been a pretty good race, Foyt and Sneva swapped the lead 7 or 8 times before Sneva dropped out on lap 79, and then Geoff Brabham and Tom Bigelow joined in, and Foyt took the lead from Brabham 3 laps before rain shortened the race at 122 laps. Mark Alderson was the highest placed Silver Crown car 18 laps down. That's Smokey Snellbaker in the #54, and I can't identify the other driver.Quote:

I guess it just goes to show that history repeats itself - however what is more absurd - filling a field with dirt track cars or running 17???
AJ did go on to do some winning in sports cars - but it was a bit of an odd last Indycar win for a storied career...
ok - here's hte next one - I jsut have to hope I can rememberthe details!!! :D it has been sitting on my computer for a while....
Oh yeah, I forgot, he won the 24 hours of Daytona 2 years in a row. You know, for as huge a fan of Foyt as I was, I only ever saw him win 2 races on tv, those two races. I was too young/not paying attention before that. (not to mention not even born yet for a big chunk of his career.)Quote:
