I really hope things eventually get better for you, Anfield.
Blimey Anfield, so sorry to hear that. I hope you can find something quickly.
Anfield, that's a bugger isn't it!
Having once been made redundant I can guess how you feel. Trust me, a job will come along if you keep looking - often from an unexpected quarter. In my case I put my details through to the 40th agency I had come across. They found me a job. On the first day the agency rang up to say they had gone belly up. I had a word with the new employer and they gave me the names of agencies they normally used and I simply switched agents. After 3 years doing short term contracts (6 weeks to a year) I landed a job a bus ride away and stayed 20 years.
Fatherly advice bit: No matter how tight your budget, set aside a sum for 'treats'. If you hit one of the inevitable low points, a bag of toffees or a beer without feeling guilty is a great morale booster.
Thanks for the support my friends. To be honest I am slightly peeved, but we all known in this sector that our courses can be dropped by the government funding agencies at any time, so we live in a state of being semi-prepared for this sort of thing. I am far more worried about Alicia than my job. I will find something else, where as she has been told she will never see properly again, and the scars on her face will be visible for at least 6 years. So my petty job issues kind of fade into the background :)
At the moment yes, for the first time in a decade New Plymouth is struggling because the energy sector is not producing, thus has a knock on effect through the town. If I stay in New Plymouth (my preferred option) I wont find work in the areas I am currently working in. If I want to stay in this type of job, I will have to look to relocate.
That's very nice anfield. I like that you support Alicia.Quote:

Mark, you need to fix the icons! It was a thumbs up to you anfield :)
Sad to hear tough stories.
I have to say then my life is currently pretty fine compared to the setbacks others have suffered. But that's what life is - you never know, what might happen, and setbacks can happen all of a sudden!
Also, New Plymouth is almost at the other side of the world compared to where I reside. So that's interesting. Wondering, how is life there.:)
Today is the first proper day I've had off since Christmas break. "Proper", in that even though I have something to do, I don't feel rushed, pressured or stressed. Plus, it's an absolutely gorgeous day outside today. And after reading Anfield's posts and knowing that in an hour or so I'll be having dinner in a place where many/most would love to experience my worst day, as it's probably better than their best day... I feel blessed and fortunate, whatever is going on in my life.
Happy Easter to you all. And may each of you find something that makes you smile.
I was born on the other side of the world in Liverpool, and that will always be my spiritual home, but New Plymouth is a great place to be. On the sea, with the world's most awesome mountain in the back garden. People are good (most of them) Climate is not too hot in summer (ave 24-26 celcius) winter isnt too cold. Cost of living is ok, but housing is stupidly expensive compared to the rest of the country. If it wasn't for my career issues, especially with my personal life looking up (pretty girl wise :)) life here would be perfect.
No one, especially me will begrudge you this Jag, it is good that you are enjoying your break. As far as I am concerned, life is fine. I have met a stunningly beautiful woman, and strangely through her aweful car accident we have become very close, and on the job front - I have done nothing to assist with my impending job loss, I have performed well within, or above the indicator marks we have set for us, so ho-hum. :)
Just got rejected by a grad school I had applied to.
Well it was expected considering the difficulty of getting in to my chosen field/degree but it still is a kick in the gut. any rejection is....I only have the rest of the year to try to get into any college/institute or I'll have to forget this and rebuild/restart my earlier career (which is even more difficult now having been out of the loop)
Sorry to hear that Storm. Hope you find another college soon. What is it that you want to study?
I'm about to have a discussion with my travel office. For whatever reason, they decided to apply the option of the reimbursement of my actual expenses to my previous trip instead of the flat rate they normally use. In practical terms it means that normally I would get my per diem (pretty fat in this case) and use it the way I like. This time they would only reimburse what I actually spent, and what qualifies as necessary (meals and transportation). The difference is quite significant and I'm concerned...
Sorry Rudy.....
Sorry Storm....
I'm such an idiot. I understood that Storm applied to be a teacher.
In Rudy's case I understood nothing.
Maybe I'm too tired.
Why should you be concerned Rudy? Either way you are reimbursed your expenses. The fact that your per-diem previously covered more than your expenses was just bonus. Per-diem is not considered income and you could be subject to taxation on the difference.
gadjo, I am trying to get back into school as a student..yeah I know weird at my advanced age ;)..
schmenke, it's Physics-Astronomy
Two things. I am not reimbursed all of my expenses. Just a part. Nobody told me the deal had changed. Had I known about it, I would have been spending more conservatively. E.g. I would have been using metro instead of taxi.
Second, I'm not a volunteer. I do my job, I get paid, I have a decent travel package. If they send me to an expensive city I need to have an acceptable standard of living.
What happened is not a disaster, though. It's still negotiable, and I might still get reimbursed. I'm just pretty sensittive when it comes to money.
Sorry to hear that Rudy and Storm. Wishing you both better luck.
Also sorry to hear you are having a bad time Gadjo.
I have so little time these days to be on the forum.
Kind of sad in a way, as I feel I am missing out.
Probably no one even notcied I am away. :(
Better being too b busy, than not busy enough my friend:)
When putting in your expenses, don't forget the gratuities. You are always a generous tipper, aren't you?
And taxis - the driver pulled a knife on you when you asked for a receipt.
And at the same time quote your actual hours worked, including reading paperwork in the evening in your hotel room. If they won't pay demand time off in lieu - you'll find there's something like that in your conditions of contract. Is Belarus in the EU? Or was this assignment in the EU? If so the EU directives regarding maximum working hours apply.
No, Belarus is not in EU and will not be there in the foreseeable future. I actually work for a country, which is not in EU either. Now I physically work in a third country, and the per diem thing happened in yet another country. Quite complex, eh? ;)
I'll be alright, though. I negotiated it. They amended my paperwork and I will get my reimbursement.
I also should mention that I do a lot of things pro bono. Once I couldn't concentrate on an important document in my office because of an incessant wave of petty taskers. I did it in two sleepless nights at home with Miles Davies in my ears. I did the follow-up to that doc on the balcony of a hotel during my vacation having a monster hangover, because I did not want to miss a deadline. I am also a generous tipper. I worked as a waiter for while, and I have sympathy for other waiters. one has to have a really bad attitude to not receive tips from me.
I'm just wandering... why doesn't everybody like rallying? :) https://youtu.be/4rXgMBKmvm4
Got the dreaded "Coming to discuss the way forward" email from out HR manager today. Translated into non-HR speak Due to government funding cutbacks my job is officially ending at the end of next month.
As previously stated (about a month ago) we knew this was coming, but facing unemployment in 5 weeks in the current job climate is not something I can really do - to old and experienced to live on a Government handout while trawling the streets for a menial job - Ho-Hum
sad to hear that...you might need to move to seek a similar job?

Sorry
I had a monster desire to get drunk. Now I am fighting a monster hangover.
What have you drunk?
Orange juice..... :p
I had a tequila with a 7up, not very nice I have to say...
