It is about cost saving. Before the wider 15" snow tyres they used narrow 16"s, so they needed special 5.5x16" wheels. Now teams can put studded tyres to gravel wheels. Size is 15".

But why canīt htey use narrow 15" tyres? It used to work back in the 70`s. Maybe they can make them fit the 15" rims as well?Quote:

This short SS when there's little snow in Sweden and they only drive on artificially made ice somehow fit S2000 a lot.
In 2010 6 out of 10 first cars were S2000, including 1st and 2nd place: eWRC-results.com - results Swedish Rally 2010
this stage is always at the end of long forrest stages. S2000 are driven less agressively and therefore less pressure on the tires. So,by the ice-sheet SSS, most of the WRCars are running on very worn studs while the situation should be much better with S2000?
thats because S2000 crews have more tyre saveing driving style and that means that they had more studs left there.
probably but not because they driven less agressively, but from less torque than wrc cars.Wrc cars if you watch at a corner they are continuesly spinning their tyres even at high speed corners.Quote:

I think there is some confusion in sizing...traditional road car sizing vs Michelins competition size nomenclature...Quote:

The 14 is 14 cm across the tread, and 62cm diameter and 15 inch wheel.. Normal road tire numbers measure "section width" across the fat part of the tire, then the "80" or 65 is the sidewall height in percent....My 14/62 x 15 were equivalent to 185/65 x 15, and those snows back then were more or less same as my old Saab came with: 155 or 165/80 x 15...
That is what got me curious...
So the old skinny ones weren't really 145 in the 145 section width way....more like about 165 or even a bit fatter, but the FOOTPRINT was 14cm or so... The 15 inch or 16" it was explained by Finnish Tire maker Black Rocket it was when you wanted a little less sidewall for snappier response, and I guess we all know that 65cm is max diameter allowed for rally since maybe 1990.
Maybe somebody there can look at some tires and say what they are marked...
