Regarding the ARBÖ Rallye question:
The event called "ARBÖ Rallye Steiermark" based around Admont / Styria was only 1988 part of the ERC.
The other "ARBÖ Rallye" in the years before was based in Lower Austria around Gloggnitz.

Hello Don, welcome to our rally discussion. I don't think the Glidden Tours have been discussed on here. But I also don't think we touched the Prinz Heinrich Fahrte and Herkomer Konkurrenze on here (although I do remember talking about them at Atlas a long time ago). So far, we've been mainly busy with sorting out details of European Championship and World Championship events, meaning that rallies before 1953 have not discussed. I think the main interest of many posters here is getting the names and numbers, and not the early history of the sport we love. Although interested in the history of the sport, I wouldn't consider myself a 'rally historian'. Perhaps the title of the thread is a little misleading, as rally results research would be more appropriate than rally history.Quote:

Okay, just curious since while I fully understand the attention given to the results, statistics, and other data related to seasons and events, which form the framework, as it were, of any study and discussion of this area of automobile competition, all that also tends to be somewhat one or, perhaps, two-dimensional at best. Plus, there is always the rather elastic use of the term "history" when this sort of thing arises.
At some point, I would suggest that an enterprising person to take the time to delve into the murky past of this sort of automotive contest from roughly a century ago. While I have little to no interest whatsoever in modern rallying, that interest dying at some point in the Seventies at the latest, my repeated stumbling over these sorts of events has made me pay more and more attention to them, their popularity -- even in America -- being far more than I had initially thought -- or even considered for that matter. One finds it difficult not to be impressed with the sheer numbers of these tours and runs during this period, certainly many more than I ever imagined. And, better covered in most cases than I would have thought, at least in the USA during the first decade or so of the past century when they seemed to flourish. Altough I am tempted to devote more time to them, I have enough headaches with the research I am conducting as it is.
I had hoped the recent revision of the forum into a separate section for History would be the opening to discuss rally history other than results (which, although I try to contribute, interests me little and nothing like as much as full entry lists do). However, we seem to be back to the previous forum layout/arrangement after a few days! (did I dream it?).
For those who are not familiar with the Colonel's contributions elsewhere, be advised we should all welcome such posts here.
Many know I despise "modern" rallying along with 4wd and count my International Rally interest back from the year (86) the UK's RAC Rally became "office hours". Despite the books that cover the period, I struggle to find adequate annecdotes from the 60s - in particular the classic European Alpine "road races" to satisfy my interest and would be in awe of someone who could get a real grip on events of 100 years ago.
