I didn't see it mentioned here or in the highlights, but Ogier had a pretty heavy touch with a haybale when he slid wide. This was in the forest at the end of Mittelmosel 2.
Very nice rally to follow. Neuville and Tanak both impressive and committed in the fast sections. Tanak - or the Toyota - very nimble, clean start-stop driving is what gets him those tens of seconds.
How much of the Panzerplatte stage is in poor condition ( as shown by the Finn reporter)? Would the organisers have been better to run the 'virtual chicanes' through the broken 'concrete' sections?
IMO consider an organisational fail to run the stage like that. Guess summer NATO tank training has caused the damage and the military does not want to fix it and the organisers don't want to pay to repair the track?
The 'virtual chicanes' can be run through the rough or too fast sections with RallySafe and road cones marking the start/ end of the sections.
Teams will be fuming if their rally is ruined by lumpy concrete on what is supposed to be a hard surface event.
Will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Remember in corsica all the drivers were very concerned about the gravel section on one stage, where only half the road had been finished with tarmac. In reality it wasn't an issue at all.
Could be the case here where everyone thinks punctures will effect at least 4/5/6 of the top 10 or so, but in reality everyone is extra alert and has marked the worst spots in their notes to drive around/avoid.
Or..., a lot of the road really is as bad as stated/shown, and it's an absolute demolition out there and a total lottery which nobody wants.
Remains to be seen whether drivers will drive at current full pace or back off and play it sensible, hoping others slip up.
No chance to follow the rally today but from the results and some comments here it seems the C3 is preventing Ogier to match Tanak and Neuville brilliant pace; hope that tomorrow some tech miracle will allow the French to get closer to the lead, keeping the title figth as open as possible. Incredible job from Rovanpera in WRC2 and a big disappointment from the Fiesta Mk2 R5; those having doubts about the car performance were, regrettably, right.
It will be interesting to see what Sordo can do with a better start position, not that he is in contention for anything now sadly. Same with Gus with that start order he has the best chance of showing his ability.
Morning, long day ahead, the beer is in the fridge, bring on
Suninen's pace seems to be good
Yep, Sordo not much fater
Gus is stopped
E: puncture
Latvala slow in first split. Sordo was flyin on those stages last year too
Doesn't look good for c3 today either
now Meeke has lost a lot between spli1 and split 2
quite surprising times for later, doesn't seem to be much dirt on the road and it should get warmer.
and the tight battle continues
ewrc says Greensmith hit a tree, any info on that?
Rovanpera slid off
Oh damn kalle
that's trouble
cmon where are spectators ?
the car has to be stuck on some kind of stump or smth
the worst time to get out for Ostberg
that was an amatur hour from the marshall stopping Mads
Oh such idiots marshals and spects
Mads should be given a Kopecky time
sloppy from the marshals indeed
When Kopecky passed the spectators with tow rope almost got run over. Then Mads was stopped completely...was the stage red flagged?
Everybody still passes in the speed limiter here so I guess not ;)

Ciamin fantastic so far.
Eric, the day was not easy for you, with probably a lot of disappointment at home.
"It's a little hard, I admit. Mentally, it's not easy because we have the habit of fighting in front. The competition is tough and we see that we are not yet in time. Once in Finland, it's ok, but here again, especially here, where we used to play in front, it's a bit frustrating. We must also know how to adapt and work. We do not despair, we give the maximum. We are gradually reducing the gap. I found stuff, I understood things about the engine and the differentials. I also attacked more. To roll to 3 tenths, I'm at 115% and as Benji told me, I do not really want to continue like this. We must be honest, we take on ourselves. The bottom line is that I hope it does not hurt our image. It's never very good to be behind but people do not realize how fast things are going. We regained confidence this afternoon, I saw that I could still transcend myself. It had been a long time since I had done this kind of special. At least that makes us progress and we know that if we have to jump into a WRC, we will be ready to give everything. "
In Corsica, you were largely ahead with the Polo in WRC-2, and there you are fighting for a top 8 in R5. How do you live that?
"We have to adapt to the situation. M-Sport gives us the means to be here and we must know how to stay positive. Others are in front but have to pay. We are official, so we do not have to complain, and do our best to make the car better and meet the goals. And here we are on the right track, I'm happy. "
You must be satisfied with your time in the SS6 (5th time of the R5)
"Yes, it's the one I remember, especially in a legendary chrono like Mittelmosel. We lose 6s on Rovanperä in 22 km, so I think it's not bad. With the differences in development between cars, I think it's a good overall performance. Frankly, we did a great special, but it was very hot. We saw 2-3 trees, it was hot (laughs). "
I take this opportunity to thank all the people who support us and who understand that auto sport is not just a time sheet, but also a story of men and mechanics. We can not always be ahead, there is a lot of competition, some cars are nascent, others are already born. Time takes time. We see that in 1 month, we still went from 1s to 3 tenths per kilometer. After that, it's sure that when I see the VW in front, a car that I developed, it's hard. But we are progressing. "

Greensmith starting late, he was repairing something related to the steering on the road section (steering rod replacement?).
Great stage from Lappi
Lappi got like 1,5 seconds at the last split
very nice fast stage this, basically no cuttin at all
Rovanperä was in a ditch but continues.
