Besides Portugal Rally (also a CPR round), in events like Açores or Madeira we’ll certainly have strong national and local R5 fields. On the rest of CPR events it seems achievable to get around 12 R5 crews, half of them with serious title options.Quote:

Honnestly, it wasn’t a surprise to see Breen dominating our top drivers on last year Rali de Mortágua, but having Arai doing the same this year was a bit shocking. Even Katsuta pace would be enough to get P2, without his SS4 puncture. It’s fair to say that most of our guys had also some issues (punctures for Fontes, Vieira and Araújo, tyre choice for Teodósio and time penalty for Barbosa) still they were never able to cope with Toy’s juniors speed.Quote:

At Madeira regional series, another amazing win for João Silva/Victor Calado in the DS; despite leading Rali da Calheta since SS1, they got strong opposition from Camacho/Calado on the Fabia. The 12 initial stages of Rally de Portugal were the 4th round of the Portuguese rally championship (CPR). Another win for Armindo Araújo and the i20 after a close fight with Miguel Barbosa (Fabia). Bad luck for Fontes on the C3 debut (electronic issue) and Meireles on the Fabia (broken gearbox), while Vieira (i20) was absent. Daniel Nunes (208) won 2wd class, ahead of Gil Antunes (Clio). Araújo is now leading the CPR, ahead of Moura and Barbosa.
No good news after day 1 of Rally Vidreiro.
Current Champion Carlos Vieira had an hard off and is currently in hospital, in quite a serious condition.

Positive news about Carlos Vieira health condition: he’s recovering after a successful surgery. Jorge Carvalho, Vieira codriver, also received medical care but he’s already at home. Probably it’ll take a while to have them back at the series, but hopefully they’ll return even stronger than before. Força Campeões!
Veiria crash impressed the rally community and it took away some of the interest on this rally results. Nevertheless, Armindo Araújo dominated and took another win, becoming the title favourite. His main rival, Miguel Barbosa, was only P6, after 2 punctures. Ricardo Teodósio finished at P2, ahead of Pedro Meireles.

Rali de Castello Branco this week-end, counting also for the second round of the Peugeot Rally Cup Iberica(after Rali de Portugal WRC) ;)
Note that José Pedro Fontès will drive a C3 R5 and Pepe Lopez a DS3 R5 ;)
There's also the return of João Barros (2016 winner) on his Fiesta.

First CPR win for the spectacular Ricardo Teodósio! Huge congrats to him, his codriver and team. Rali de Castelo Branco was quite exciting, with 4 crews very close at the top during all rally. Teodósio pushed hard in the last loop and managed to pass Fontes (strong debut of the C3) in the last stage, getting a deserved overall win after so many years. Epic duel also in 2wd class, with Gago and Antunes fighting all rally long; Gago went off on last stage and Antunes got another win (first in the 208 Cup).

Diogo Gago (this season ERC U27 early leader and former 2wd national champ) will make his R5 debut on the next round of the CPR (Rali Amarante/Baião) at the wheel of an i20 from Hyundai Portugal. He’ll use the car of Carlos Vieira, that’s still recovering from last June accident; Jorge Carvalho, Vieira co-driver, is already recovered and will return alongside Gago.
Rali de Amarante/Baião, the penultimate event of the Portuguese championship (CPR), has started this afternoon. Armindo Araújo in the official i20 is the series leader and Ricardo Teodósio on a Fabia his main challenger; José Pedro Fontes (C3) and Miguel Barbosa (Fabia) have only remote title chances. Besides these 4, the rally win is also a target for João Barros (another driver switching from a Fiesta to a Fabia). After 2 stages Barros is leading but Teodósio, Fontes and Araújo aren’t far.

Fantastic fight in Rali de Amarante/Baião: Barros lead the event with Fontes always close to him but on the final stages Fontes pushed hard and managed to get the first overall win with the C3. Araújo was P3 in front of Teodósio and he’s now quite close to become 2018 CPR champion. Good debut on a R5 car for Gago, not far from the top 5 and making no mistakes. Bernardo Sousa briefly returned to the CPR, winning 2wd category on a 208 R2 run by his own team (BS Motorsport).
Btw, great effort from the organizers on their debut at the CPR; it was a nice rally to spectate, with SS’s all quite close and run on a easy to follow schedule; still we missed the fantastic gravel stages of the region and we can only hope they’ll return to this event on a near future.

Rallye Casinos do Algarve, the last round of the CPR and also FIA ERT final, is about to start. It’ll decide the Portuguese champion between Araújo (i20), Teodósio (Fabia) and Fontes (C3). Araújo is the best placed to win, but Teodósio is runing on his home event; Fontes chances are slim. Big fight also for CPR2 (2wd champ’ship) and 208 Cup titles.

Congrats to Armindo Araújo/Luís Ramalho and Hyundai Portugal, they’re the new Portuguese champs! Araújo managed to also win the rally after his rivals issues: local hero Teodósio was dominating the event until the engine broke in SS8 and on the same stage Fontes got a puncture. Camacho eventually finished 2nd, winning the ERT in front of Barbosa. Nunes/Raimundo were the best 2wd crew, getting the CPR2 title.

Fontes got one puncture also in first leg. And did few mistakes (I know about two spins).
Alex Camacho is winner of ERT, in one of his few outings from Madeira. Second is Fontes and third Ondrej Bisaha. Winner of ERT2 is Sergei Remennik, ERT3 is Miguel Correia and ERTJ is Roberto Blach.
Congratulations to Armindo Araújo, Luís Ramalho and Hyundai Portugal. That is probably the biggest success of Hundai i20 R5 in the history of this car.
Yep, and Barbosa also spun a couple of times, Armindo run first leg with a wrong set-up, Paixão went off while being (a stunning) fourth, etc, etc. Honestly, I see little point mentioning on a short post all issues crews had, especially as it become clear that SS8 was the key moment of the rally.Quote:

I was watching the list of drivers and I must add one thing - where are young drivers?
Well, Miguel Correia and Pedro Almeida are young.
Yep, Almeida is only 21 and already run last year on a Fiesta R5, showing a promising pace; Correia is not that young (27), but he was last year CPR revelation (IMO): after a first (and sole) experience on a regional rally in 2017, he run the whole ’18 season on a Clio R3, managing to win the 2wd class in a couple of events and be the class P3 at the end of the season. Not in the list, but hopeffuly in some events besides their local rally, there’s also Pedro Paixão (24) from Madeira and Luis Rego (28) from Açores.
For sure it’d be great to have more young drivers on the CPR main class, like some of the 208 Cup stars, but the brands are still betting on the more experienced guys.
Paixao was big surprise for me on Algarve, but he didnt finished. And he didnt do so many events out of Madeira... Miguel Correia I have seen on Azores and Algarve and he didnt impressed me. Maybe bit too early for him to R5 now. Regarding Pedro Almeida, I didnt know he is so young. Again I have seen him in Azores and Algarve and on both events he was, lets say, average. He was enjoying to drive R5 car, sliding a lot, sometimes too much aggressive, but not so fast. Luis Rego is good, I follow him for many years, but he is doing only rallies on Azores...Quote:

Btw, I’ve seen the other 3 doing their debut on gravel, last year at Fafe, and they were all struggling a bit, although Correira looked more at ease than the others. Througth the year they all improved and at Amarante I got surprised by the pace of Almeida (P6, on a close figth with Gago and Meireles) and Correia (only beaten by Sousa on the 2wd class); both, alongside Paixão, deserve the fans attention during 2019. Fingers crossed for them!
