I think you'll find it was invented by a Mr Dennis Tennis, who went on to marry Miss Mabel Table. She became Mabel Table-Tennis and later invented her own sport.
A court employee is known as a courtesan.
The seemingly random tennis scoring system was based on angles of stars seen in major constellations and there are many in-jokes about this in the film Star Wars - although there are more Evert, sorry overt, references in the sequel, The Umpire Strikes Back.
