Cars that finished in the Top 35 in the 2007 Owner's Points Standings WILL make the Daytona 500 starting field.
ONLY the top 2 starting positions will be determined by qualifying speeds on Sunday, February 10th.
Positions 3-39 will be determined by finishing orders in the Gatorade Duel races Thursday, February 14th.
The final 4 spots in the 43-car field will be based on qualifying speeds of cars not already with a starting position.

NOTE : However IF there is an eligible Cup Series Past Champion entered who has not yet qualified ...
that Past Cup Champion will receive the 43rd & last starting position no matter what his speed is ...
if there is more than 1 Past Cup Champion eligible for this position, it goes to the MOST RECENT Cup Champion.

Previous Champions NOT in the 2007 Top 35 in Owner's Points :
Kurt Busch - 2004 Cup Champion
Dale Jarrett - 1999 Cup Champion
Bill Elliott - 1998 Cup Champion

Congratulations to Jimmie on the pole but also well done to Mikey, (Almost) Front Row Joe and David Reutimann on making the show.
Personally I'm delighted to see these drivers in as with the exception of Sterling (who was never going to make it on speed) and Awesome Bill, these are the drivers who I most wanted to see make it.
Now I'm looking forward to flying out to Daytona and watching Sterling, Bill and DJ make the 500 via the duel races.

The one-engine rule WILL mandate those that changed engines will have to start in the back of the Daytona 500 ...
that will be BEHIND the cars that qualify in the Duels, I think 23rd is a bit too optimistic. http://www.motorsportforums.com/forums/images/smilies/roll_eyes.gif

Jayski could be wrong but here's what he's saying.

"Team are allowed to change engines between the Duels and the Daytona 500 and not have to fall to the rear of the field."

OK so my bets are on Jimmie Johnson for the Daytona 500 this weekend. After he won the pole last Sunday he's definitely in a good spot! I know he can do it! I usually watch races at my buddy's house who has a nice big HDTV. But, he's out of town this weekend and sadly all I have is a 27" dinosaur TV that the wife thinks is "just fine."

I found this TV I really want at Costco. It's a 42" Vizio HD 1080p and it's on sale for only $950 bucks! (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11272877&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1)

I have heard Vizios are great, and for that cheap, I really don't want to pass this up. Only problem is, how do I convince her we need this? She doesn't understand that Nascar NEEDS to be in HD! It just looks so darn beautiful.

How can I convince her? Or should I have an "accident" with the dinosaur and then conveniently drop into conversation the great Vizio TV deal? AHHH so frustrating!

Good luck Jimmie! I pray to God I can watch you win in HD!

Spark, you are correct on the engine quote from jayski. The engine that is run in qualifying and practice up until thursday is concerned only with the duel. They are permitted an engine change for Sunday, due to the excess mileage. Jimmie Johnson will start on the pole for the Daytona 500.

I think this is going to be a pretty good race. It seems like there are a lot of solid cars this year and I'm excited.

It might actually be a good week for Kasey too lol. He is having the best speedweeks he has had by far. JG even asked for Kasey to follow him at the end of the duel because he thought that Kasey had a car to get him to the front. I think that could be a first.

On victory lane, Spence said that JV did exactly the opposite of what should have been done. He said that in the rookie meetings that they advise the rookies that your best bet is not to steer against the spin and try and correct, but instead, steer with the spin and try to get to the bottom of the track, away from the walls.

The penske's got lucky with the 2 lap shootout, pity the last 10 couldn't go green all the way. Jr looked to be very strong, his teammates suffered misfortune and was left alone when they all needed teamwork to get to the front.

It was a very good race.

my two(or more cents):

great race, typical Daytona action. exciting beginning, lull during the middle stages, completed by an amazing final 30 laps.

would have never predicted Newman as the victor, congrats to him and the entire Penske organization.
i believe Kurt Busch drove the race of his career(with respect to Homested 04). his week, let alone the 500, was crazy and all over the place for him.
Hornish gave a great accounting of himself, though California & Vegas will seal his fate.

Kyle Busch gave this one away. he was bad fast but he'll regret the errors. first sliding thru his pit, then going below the yellow(in turn ruining Earnhardt's race). Kyle Busch is for real and once he reigns his exuperance in will be a huge winner and multiple champion.
the speculation is confirmed, JGR is the BEST thing to happen to Toyota(besides the CoT). those cars were strong all speedweeks and testing.
this is only the beginning for them. Vickers' Toyota was also super strong. he'd would have been in the thick of things if he could've recovered his lap sooner. Red Bull will surprise people this year.

Clint Bowyer got screwed. in contrention all the way only to get spun out of the LEAD! i was amazed at how little Fox played into that. IMHO how can you not call the leader getting spun off the lead with 15 to go the turning point of the race? RCR suffered. in position, but nothing to show for it. Burton was a sitting duck and suffered for Busch's impatience.
yet another year of RCR stepping up(or sandbagging?) for the prize that counts.

Roush and Hendrick were surprises. i figured Matt Kenseth to challengs, but expected little from the rest of Roush. Biffle was a big surprise, he's usually a dud on the restrictors.
the law of averages finally caught up to the Hendrick team, though aside from Earnhardt and briefly Gordon they weren't that strong today. Johnson was disappointing, while Mears did show up when it counted, but let it go with a poor decision.

again congrats to the 12, it's always nice to be surpised!!

Nice to see Penske run strong... way to go Robby Gordon.

Too bad Junior only 8th, I'd say the pitstop miscue hurt him some. Still the best Hendricks if you can beleive that! Hate his new paint job.

Good run by Hornish. I'm surprised.

The Toyotas might be too good... will we see NASCAR tweaking by mid-year?

First "mysterious" debris caution happened about 6 laps after Jimmie Johnson's bad green flag pitstop

second "mysterious" debris caution happened when Jeff Gordon lost the draft in the second group and they said they were having problems.

The cars were all spread out, yet there was still alot of no-help passing going on.
Great race.

Funny how those two almost always benefit from "debris cautions" (well except for Jeffy. No debris caution was gonna fix his suspension :p )

Boooooooooooooooooring!! Thought close racing wasn't there and not great to watch. Hope things get better soon.

Sorry Dawg, I have to disagree. Considering it was the first Daytona 500 with the COT, I thought the race was very interesting indeed.

I certainly didn't miss the lack of 'The Big One' and I thought it was very interesting how many close calls we had rather than wrecks.

Strategy and teamwork are going to be very important this year methinks...

I think we are in for a great years' racing and it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top.

I certainly didn't predict a Penske 1-2! :p But I'm very pleased for Ryan, he deserves some good fortune.

But the debris caution may have (suspiciously) been where the "debris" was shreds of suspension parts.

Some thoughts:

Chevrolet - Last year, went 36/36 in podiums. They couldn't even score a single point using the F1-style scoring system, and this was the worst finish for the Bowtie since March Atlanta ten years ago. After dominating last year, it seems everyone hunted, and shot down, Impala Nation. They also beat themselves with bad incidents with many of their stars (#24, #48, #07, #5) and also non-competitiveness with the survivors.

Ford - The Blue Oval's best was tenth, and it wasn't but last year I think there was one case no Fusion was in the Top Ten.

Dodge - Back to the 1960's and 1970's with the 7000cc (427 cid) era we go. It seems there were Chargers everywhere slicing through the field to dominate. Six of the top eight were Chargers, and the Charger nose was what had Robby Gordon in violation in pre-Practice One inspection. Of course, that was Gillett Evernham's problem as they sent 2008 Charger noses instead of 2007 Avenger noses. A million here and a million there, and Bob Nardelli, after failing at Home Depot to win the 500, gets his Daytona 500 ring at last. How ironic that we go back to winged cars and guess where Dodge is?

Toyota - The Hinomaru is for real. Outside pole, dominating the most laps led, one podium slot, two in the top five. Is this the season where at the end of the season, we'll be hearing "May 1,000 Years of Happy Reign be Yours" when the Sprint Cup is given? Will this give Tony Stewart incentive to renew with the Gibbs boys, or is he really going to jump ship and start his own team? I think he'll buy an idled Bowtie team because of his business interests. This is a threat, and next week is big. Michigan is big for the Bowtie, Blue Oval, and Ram because it is a "hometown" race. For Fontana, Toyota will be racing in their backyard, as Toyota is based in Torrance and so is TRD.

For Todd Holbert, a lead engineer for Toyota, a win would have been huge in more ways than you would think. Recently his grandfather Bob died, and he would have wanted to win this race for his grandfather. Remember, his father died 20 years ago in a plane crash, and I think most racing fans know who he was.

Tony says that it was his biggest dissapointment in racing. He really screwed up when he left the high line to dip low to pick up Kyle. It cost him the lead and the race and he should know better than to rely on a kid that is unreliable. Kyle is frequently out of control with his driving decisions and once more he screwed up by being too agressive. Kyle had the fastest car by far and should have won the race. However, as proven, it takes more than a fast car to win.

Thats the thing with this relying on team mates crap that has come about now. Did Tony feel he had to drop down to help Kyle out becuase they are on the same team?. Tony should have left Kyle hanging, its the DAYTONA 500!!! everyones out there for the win, there are no teamates only one driver goes to victory lane. you shouldnt loose a race for what looks like a misplaced sense of loyalty.
