I must say I am rather disappointed with how Sweden has turned out.

It is normally one of the rallies with a strong entry list and close battles, but all the gaps in the top 8 are huge now, Wilslow is well in the points, Gardemeister is 9 minutes off the pace and still in the points and there is still a day to go.

i ve seen a video from safari rally 80s ? and a nissan 240rs was in a ditch with mud
the car was full of people round the car, and trying to push it from 4 different directions, big fun to watch it!!
not big fun if you drove that nissan also!

what Marcus is saying in this vid?

In short: Was amazed about JML's pace and joked about why couldn't Sebastien have similar difficulties while he was still driving. When asked if he would like to be back on stages in Sweden said that no as the conditions are what they are but in case of proper winter conditions his feelings could be different.

Well, yes, Latvala and Sandell/207 have been the exceptions, it's just the rest of them in between, as someone else said doesn't quite compare to the entry lists of previous years.

So Loeb can start the next rally without a penalty for his new engine?

I am wondering the same thing. Will he get the 5 minute pentalty for next round like Sordo did for this one?

Mirek
9th February 2008, 18:17
Definitely not. First, he must have finished rally and moreover I think that this rule is for pairs of events, in this case Monte and Sweden.

urabus-denoS2000
9th February 2008, 18:40
He will not get 5 minutes for the next rally because he retired and he can freely change the engine.
At the Mnte Carlo rally Sordo changed the engine and finished.

alleskids
9th February 2008, 18:56
The pairing of the engine is not exactly 2 and 2 anymore like in 2007 I have heard some were on the forum (Sordo's 5 minute penalty tread). Only that a manufacturer may use only a limited number of engines, so 1 engine must be used for more than 2 rallies. So in the 3rd connected rally Loeb may use a new engine.

PLuto

At Monte Sordo finished and then change engine. During race you cannot change engine.

An that is a real scandal. 110 teams has come to Karlstad and have prepared to drive two championship round. Each team has already used lots of money on their preparations, travel and accomodation. And for what...?

You don`t need to go to Lapland to find proper winter in Norway btw. I was skiing yesterday, 25 kms from Oslo. Snowdepth was about 1 metre...

They were thinking about cancel this event a week ago, but they still hoped that weather would be better...

Khalid Al Qassimi:

On Thursday, I was talking about the Swedish rally fans and how enthusiastic they are. Today, I met them for real and they kept me in the rally.

I slid wide on a tightening corner of the first stage and went off the road and into a ditch. We were around six feet lower than the road and I thought my rally was over, for sure. But before the car had even come to a halt, a crowd of huge Swedish fans was gathered around the car and started pushing us back towards the road. Or at least, I thought they were pushing!

They literally lifted the car back up onto the road so that we could continue! It was absolutely unbelievable. There were a couple of times when it was steep that I had to start the engine and use it to help them - help them! - but it was them who got me back. And without their help, my rally would have finished there and then.

Another group did exactly the same later on in the day, when I slid off again. The conditions were very tricky for me with almost no experience of snow and ice and again, it was thanks to the fans that we were able to continue.

When you're in the car and the adrenalin is flowing, you don't always remember to thank those who help you but I want to say an enormous thank you to everyone who helped us today. Again, it is this kind of spirit that makes the WRC such an amazing sport and I hope that one day, I may be able to repay their efforts. Offering them some Abu Dhabi hospitality would be nice, if that were possible...

Galli does not have 'safe' in his vocabulary.

from 2006 on he has, believe me...

I'm afraid Consti is right. And I admit I loved the old Galli more (call me "idiot" xD !).

Btw, I've seen the TV coverage, JML is young AND still crazy. He was hitting everything in sight on one stage, like he was driving a bulldozer LOL

What can I say of the second day overall that hasn't been said. Sordo is doing quite well. Without the penalty he would be ahead of Solberg who is considered snow specialist (he is actually but the car sucks...). It's not bad anyway :)

ROTFL ! Video on wrc.com of the usual interview with the first three drivers is really funny, JML talking about the big moment I described in the previous post (basicly it was the "unexpected" tarmac section), Mikko saying "had trouble in there too, Malcom would have been so happy if we both crashed there" and Gigi announces a relaxing 'cruise' tomorrow like he'd be driving a Stobart truck xD

Btw if JML wins tomorrow he'll be the youngest WRC winner, and this was known... but it will be nice to see Matthew Wilson face as he aims to be the one and now instead of 24 years the "limit" is 22 = less time (how old is he now ?).
He's still the youngest special stage winner anyway - which isn't something to trash I think.

I believe your source as soon as they tell me how old the all other stage winners have been, or even who the all WRC stage winners have been.

Matthew may be youngest of those we know of but how about the 222 other (that's a real figure, btw) stage winners in the history of WRC? And how about those of whom we don't know (I still am missing stage winner info from about 30 WRC events). That claim is tantamount to saying that Earth is the greenest planet in the universe.

Just for the record, I have nothing against Matthew in this. I just want to know if it's a fact (and only way to know that is to know all WRC stage winners and their DOBs - which are an info I am missing and would very dearly like to get my hands on).
Somebody should edit that info, or it will spread everywhere and we'll all believe it's 100% verified and true !

I am guessing Henning is pissed off from yesterday, and "want to show them", and he is probably having a lot of fun doing it. Stage win on the first stage of the day is not like him, he usually is a bit of a slow starter - so this is good - a new barrier broken !

Latvala needs some tutor talking right away.

The story goes..

The year Ari Vatanen won his title and they drove RAC, Hannu Mikkola was driving after Ari on stage. At the service he told Ari that those are not the lines of champion you're making. Vatanen was throwing his Escort all the way and Mikkola was afraid he'll never finish the rally that way. God for bid Vatanen believed Mikkola and eased off instantly.

Sticking out my neck her also, I think Wilson have done a good job here in Sweden steady driving and no big drama on very difficult condisons. 5 min behind rally leader is good in my book. His problems is that he don’t seems able to fight for really good stagetimes from time to time.

Amazing first victory for J-M !!!!

Hirvonen gave up too easily......i didn't like that.

Loeb couldn't do much about Jm and i don't think he could match his times....but he would certainly apply pressure. He now has to worry about finland as well....he has 2 people to beat not just 1.

I don't think on gravel JM has much chances yet and i doubt Hirvonen is in a place to be close to Loeb also....but time will tell.

I think also the organisers must be more careful with their selection of the place for the rally....

Real problem for Loeb and Citroën is that they can ONLY use as per FIA rule 5 engines in 2008.
Sordo blew 1 in MC, now Loeb in Sweden.... still 13 events to go

without the 5min penalty Sordo would fight for places 3-4....

And without 3 Superrally stages Henning would be 2nd...
