The Australian V8 Supercar Championship will change its points system this year, extending scoring down to 30th place.

Series bosses believe the system used last year, which only awarded points down to 15th place, prevented too many competitors from scoring.

V8 Supercars chief executive Wayne Cattach said: "It's important that the teams who make the effort but run in the lower half of the field are still rewarded with points that reflect their finishing position."

But Cattach was keen on a system with bigger points differences between the higher places to encourage more overtaking: "We think we've improved the system by placing more importance on winning," he said.

"It's always difficult to find a system that pleases everyone and is relatively simple to explain, but we believe we've achieved it."

The scoring system for triple header rounds now gives the winner 100 points, second place 92, and decreases by six points per place to sixth, then by four points to 11th, and two points per place down to 30th.

It begs the question why, really. If the teams want to get points they should finish in the top 15. Also, the new points system awards the winner with 108% of the points scored by the runner up, whereas before the winner was awarded with 120% under last years points system. So it doesn't place more importance on winning at all. :s All they needed to do was give 25 points for the win, like MotoGP.
