Sorry if this is ment to be in road/transport forum.

Simple. Rate your town's road network out of 10 (10 being highest, 1 being lowest) and explain why you rated it like that. I'm interested in seeing how foreign towns roads are compared to ours.

I'll start with some of my local towns and Nottingham.

Newark - 9/10

Both A1 and A46 bypass the town and all of the main routes join it without going through the town so it is rarely congested. A46 could do with being dauled though. Also the council have rather shockingly propsosed moving the bus station next to the river so that they can put an ASDA in the origanal location. Otherwise very efficient.

Nottingham - 4/10

Reasonable access to the M1 and a decent southern bypass. Northwestbypass is total crap with people's houses having their driveways leading directly onto the road. A52 east out to Grantham is OKish. Anything within the bypass however is a nightmare from what i've seen. Horrid lack of daulled roads.

Mansfield - 3/10

Poor new bypass hardly did much to relieve the town center. They decieded to use traffic lights rather than roundabouts to add to their already large collection of traffic lights in the center and on the A38. The bypass also does not join onto the north A60 to Worksop which is often busy. A38 out to M1 is mosted single road despite plenty of space around it for it to be daulled and it is littered with yet more traffic lights. The only good road out is the A617 out to the neighbouring town with the least population (Newark). :s Plus the various random suburb towns surrounding don't exactly help matters. It's not even like they have any decent rail links either to provide an alternative.

Retford - 6/10

No real bypass. The A1 Retford bypass is too far away to have any real effect on traffic releive. There's still no alternative for through traffic to Gainsborough. There's a decent ring road round the center which only goes halfway round. Train service is good as it's on the GNER line and provides a good alternative for commuters to Newark or Doncaster.

Worksop - 7/10

A57 provides a decent bypass around the south of the town leaving only 2 not so busy routes having to go through the town, even they have a within town bypass. A60 south sometimes has traffic backing up to the french style roundabout with the A619. Town center is a mess but only people going there have to go anywhere near it. Otherwise a good road system.

Lincoln - 1/10

First of all the single point comes from the A46 bypass round the west and north but it is rather congested like most roads in Lincolnshire. A south bypass is desperately needed as the congested A15 from Sleaford dumps traffic into the heart of the city with only a pathetic excuse of an expressway passing the city center as an alternative. Traffic is then encorage to head out east to the end of the bypass, alright if your heading east but a long way round if your heading anywhere else. Speaking of the center it is a mess of dangerously narrow oneway streets. Round the cathedral there are a couple of rather pointless stone arches on a main route through the city that forces the road to become one lane to go through it. One of which is right before an intersection with traffic lights.

If you know the city well then it is slightly OK to negociate but if you don't well you better make sure you buy an A-Z of Lincolnshire first if you ever have the misfourture to have to go there as your in for a nightmare drive. ;) One I will personally avoid going to once I'm on the road regurly.

Getting into an out of the city centre from the main motorway seems to vary considerably city to city.

e.g.
Inverness - So small it doesn't matter.

Perth - Single carriageway road all the way in.

Glasgow - Excellent access right into the city centre as the M8 runs right through the middle.

Edinburgh - Have a few miles of S2 road to negotiate as well as bus lanes etc, but not too bad if you come in from the Forth Road bridge on the A90

Newcastle - Excellent, dual carriageway all the way from the A1 to the tyne bridges and then S4 road from there, leading into the central motorway.

York - Several miles of single carriageway road between the city and the motorway.

Manchester - It seems there there is no main road directly into the city centre and you have to drive through mile after mile of suburbs before you get there.

Liverpool - See Manchester.

Nottingham - The A52 dual carriageway gets you pretty close to the city centre but then gives up and leaves you on S2 roads to crawl your way in, at least it's not too far to go.

Birmingham - Excellent. Motorway leading almost all the way into the city centre then dual carriageway thereafter. Access from the south is rubbish tho.

Oxford - Crawling through suburbs again, thankfully it's not too big.
