Spyker team to be renamed 'Force India F1' in 2008

Wonder what the actual cars will be referred to by commentators etc? A 'Force'? An 'India'? A 'Force India'?

Sounds a bit of a mouthful in a commentating sense although we was all saying that about the 'Toro Rosso' tag a few years back and that hasnt seemed to be a problem I guess.

Will the Force be with us?

Vijay Mallya, the new owner of Spyker F1, says that he wants to call the team Force India F1. The cars will be known as Force Indias. The problem is that in order for the name change to happen all the teams must agree and this means there is likely to be some opposition because of the ongoing legal battles between Spyker F1 and Super Aguri and Toro Rosso.

Mallya says that it is in the best interest of the sport for the the name to be changed to have the maximum possible impact for F1 in India - a fair point - but whether this will happen in the sometimes twisted world of F1 remains to be seen. Mallya is also playing an important role in trying to sort out the details of an Indian Grand Prix. He is already head of both the competing motor sport federations of India, one which is backed by the Indian government and the other one which has the support of the FIA. The FIA is now in the process of forcing the two to merge so that theer are no longer any disputes and the FIA's Alan Donnelly has been appointed to make sure that this happens by the end of December.

Mallya says he is not intending to make many immediate changes in the team but has put a United Breweries executive into Spyker to look after the finance. He is T.V. Lakshmi Kanthan, who has been with UB for 23 years in various capacities and is currently serving as Finance Director in the UK.

I predict a line-up of:

Race Drivers:

Narain Karthikeyan (the Indian Gilles Villeneuve!)
Ralf Schumacher (the German Ralf Schumacher)

Test Driver:

Karun Chandhok (the most likeable man in GP2)

What will happen to Adrian Sutil, who has a contract with them for 2008?

Oh come on now, how long have you been watching F1 for? Surely a contract isnt worth anything. Theres always a loop-hole or if need be a buyout.

South Northants County Council must be rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of more bills to send to the team for changing the roadsigns on the Silverstone dual carriageway again. :p :

He'll hopefully move up the grid to a new team.

Aside from all the Force jokes that can be made I think it is a pretty poor name.

Must have been a nice little earner for the council :D

One thing is clear - if Adrian can't get into a better team, he'll continue there, where he currently is. The team rates him really highly. Hard to comment about the chances of getting into another team - there are so many young drivers trying to find a drive... I still think that it's most probable to see Sutil at Force India next year, but on the other hand - you'll never know!

Surely this means Narain is going to replace Yamamoto?...

yes Sutil should get the drive alongside Narain and see how things develop at team india, narain suppose to be more experienced by now specially with williams exp. not sure if they will opt for ralf to develop the car further than sutil...well the owners have lots of monies to pump, but its a indeed a question how long the team will last?

they may chose to bring in Indian contractors to change wheels job etc...
wont be goodnews for the really goodones in the market as all will be replaced by cheap workforce, force india will become the cheapest F1 teams in terms of spending.

It's obviously no connection, but weren't the Lolas Carl Haas ran in 1986 known as Force-Lola's at one stage?
