I wonder if Penske had his hands in this one? It's an interesting spin on the old CART Franchise system. A logical way to leverage the participants into staying.

I doubt it. It's just a big extension of the Leader's Circle system that's been in place for about five years, which is patterned after NASCAR's Winner's Circle program.....it's more incentive than leverage.

It's a little funny how the sub-headline for the story reads:

"Program provides SOILD foundation; Indy 500 to see record purses"

C'mon GET A PROOFREADER !!!!

I hope it doesn't prove to be an ironic typo.

As for the new structure.... I think it's a winner. It still pays out EXTRA to the race winners so there is still great incentive to win each race. Plus the huge bonus to the IndyCar Champion and successive spots in the standings is substantial.

I just wish they would increase the payout for the 500 to $5 million. Then watch the NASCAR guys say... WHO NEEDS CHARLOTTE ???

I see no downside to this structure other than it smacks of socialism. :)

But give me Karl Marx anytime as long as it brings in more drivers, more teams, more competition top to bottom.

FWIW Nascar has flattened Race purses. FOr example, In 2000, Bobby Labonte won $831,225 in winning the Brickyard 400 with a $5.7 million purse. The lowest paid starter won $80,860.

This year, Tony Stewart won $488,111 of a almost $8.3 million purse with the lowest paid starter making $137,850
