I didn't get round to posting on the thread on the old forum but made sure I kept an eye on it, so figured someone might as well start the new one.

Guess all BTCC model related chat can go in here.

How come nobody makes BTCC models bar Scalextric?

Neil Adams
6th December 2006, 18:24
i guess theres not a big enough market for them, would be great if they did, should become easier for model manufacturers to do btcc cars now the championship is more biased towards s2000 cars (e.g. one body shape can be used for models representing cars competing all over europe) like the ST days

i've still got to finish off the 2004 plato toledo and 2005 neal integra that im making, will probably make pinkneys integra as well

Well, the BMWs, SEATs, Honda and Alfa Romeos that have been in the BTCC super 2000 class since 2004 (Breeze Alfa already made) could be made at little expense as they have been made for WTCC/ETCC and only need a decal change. The Lexi and BTC Touring spec cars may be harder to make as a model manufacturer wouldhave o get new moulds etc

daz90
9th December 2006, 10:38
Maybe the new rule shift in the BTCC will encourage Spark atleast to build the odd model, depending on what cars the BTCC will run. Surely the Seat will eventualy be built by someone other than Scalextric.

Captain VXR

I hope someone makes models of every super 2000 car competing in Europe and the WTCC all in the same scale.

Isn't the showroom Lexus already being made by Spark or Minichamps. So only new moulds need to be made for the spoiler and possibly front bumper? I thought I recall reading most of the time, it's the sponsors who may refuse or want too much royalty before allowing their logos to be used on the racecar?

The front bumpers on the HPI/BTC Racing and Xero/Forward cars are different too.

I am feeling pretty pleased with myself, i have just added a Minichamps 1995 Audi A4, Frank Biela, the World Champion car.

Never even seen one of those before i came across it on eBay a week or so ago, got lucky too, it was less than 20 quid posted.

Less than £20... well done. I must admit I stopped looking for Audi A4's a while ago.

So had i. Then i started looking for a cheap minichamps road car model (i need a spare sleeve for a BTCC car) and just typed A4 in, saw that and started to watch it, thinking it would fetch quite a bit, it didn't and i had a bid and won it.

The only other A4 i have is an STW car, and that cost more than the Biela one did.

Just a quick update on my Honda Integra..

The bodywork is finished, spoilers front and rear. Wheel arch extensions done.
The biggest hassle was to make the arches then cut them so that the bumpers could be removed!

Just have to finishing painting it. Re-assemble it and then try to add some decals!

No idea!

I started collecting them in 1991. Some are kits, most are diecast. I only bought models that look right. Take the Racing Replica's Cavaliers, I could have bought them all years ago at £10 each. But because they look as if they run into the back of a low-loader, i didn't bother. Suffice to say I now have one in my collection (until I can build a better version). Prices have varied from £5 upto £40. With over 220 models in my collection, I suppose they are worth more than I have paid out. But that's not what I bought them for!

Peter you've got Lee Brookes' 1997 Peugeot in your champions list there. Robb Gravett won that year in the Honda Accord and Brookes won in 1996 with the Toyota Carina e. :)

Hey PDS, was your '96 BTCC Biela A4 a genuine Minichamps one or a conversion? I know they were only built by Minichamps as a limited edition 1996 Audi champion set?

Otherwise, you had to build the car from a resin kit?

That one is a converted minichamp. Just added the decals to a spare A4 I had. I have never seen a 1/45 96 minichamp avaliable on it's own yet! I also have an un-made BBR resin kit.

Supposedly, there were a very select and limited amount of 96 BTCC models made available through the dealer channel? It was in an Audi accessory box. At least that's what the Ebay said, the model sold for 90 GBP or US, forget the currency. But regardless, that's still alot of moolah!

You should start a Macau Guia Champion collection! That's about the only champion collection I've started to collect and will probably try to keep up. OTOH, if you start that collection, you'll largely end up with just a bunch of BMWs!

I had thought about the Macau races. But where will it stop? Why not Spa Races? Or Bathurst?

I shall stick to National and International Champions.

yep, that's the set I was talking about. 299 EUR0 seems a bit on the high side since the last time I saw a set go on Ebay. I've only seen 2 or 3 sets all these years, but considering only 500 were produced, that's not suprising. Wow, if only I had extra money to spend. Now that's a cool conversation piece!

I just briefly glimpsed through the ad, looked like the original ST set in execution, but it turns out to be just a nice custom display case/job. I guess you could do the same thing yourself. But it looks like the seller ended the auction early. I think the last bid price was like 150GBP?

That is an awesome list KILOHMUNNS, i wish i could tap into some of those myself ;)

I cant say i recognise you from my eBay battles, although i do recognise the odd name from time to time on there.

My collecting with regards to Onyx models is close to being complete, i look on eBay and never see much i would still want to add, the odd one pops up from time to time. And i havn't bought a Touring car model for some time, i still keep my eye out though. I am also going to start looking into converting the odd car, i would love a 95 BTCC Cavalier, and might well try my hand at one. Its the decals that would beat me though, no idea how you would go about producing those.

The majority of my models have come off ebay.

Same here, i started off in about 1994, and i remember my first ever purchase very well, it was the Minichamps Ford Mondeo of Andy Rouse, 1994 car, and i bought that brand spanking new from a local model shop in Grantham, i think it cost twenty quid new, although i can hardly remember. A few days later i bought an Opel Calibra, DTM, Ludwig, 1/64 scale, that was around a tenner.

Then ever since i left college in 96, (and got a proper job, and some money) i started buying them through mail order, a company that has since gone bust, well a good five years ago, and a company whos name escapes me now. However the vast majority have come off eBay, and all in the past four years or so since i got the internet at home.

Its a good job there is such a thing as eBay.

They could be from Provence Moulage. However, I've become extremely

There's also a german company called Gama that makes resin models of the Audi 80s!

But I've become very leery/nervous about the decals that come with the resin models. For some reason, 2 of the 4 decal sets basically evaporated or turned into shards after being placed in warm water as per application instructions. I think it's b/c they've dried out over the years?

As well, how do you paint the "rubber window mouldings" for these resin models? I try to use a thin brush but paint always seems to become messed up?

The one's listed in italics are cars I am having to convert using other models, and all are 1/43rd.

I Thought I'd have a look at your list again and I am very intrigued! I'm a huge Cleland fan and was wondering about the cars you are converting. I take it you are using the Comp 43 base for the Astra but what about the Cavalier's? I'm also very intersted in your 3 Rouse models to know where they have come from. As you can see from my list I have a lot of normal models to make but what you are doing will be the next stage to fill in those gaps (I'm still new to the model making thing), especially the 70s and 80s and just would like to know how you start, especially the decals bit as I need to reproduce a couple of mine (Lots of trouble with Formule kit decals as they have a habit of falling appart!)

Thanks

They could be from Provence Moulage. However, I've become extremely

There's also a german company called Gama that makes resin models of the Audi 80s!

But I've become very leery/nervous about the decals that come with the resin models. For some reason, 2 of the 4 decal sets basically evaporated or turned into shards after being placed in warm water as per application instructions. I think it's b/c they've dried out over the years?

As well, how do you paint the "rubber window mouldings" for these resin models? I try to use a thin brush but paint always seems to become messed up?

The kits are from Formule. I haven't tried Gama yet as they don't do BTCC but do have a few kits that can be converted if you have the right decals. I have the same problem with the Formule decals with them disintergrating and currently trying to find a way of reproducing them. Never had a problem with the quality kits though (BBR, Baymo)

I haven't tried to do the rubber seal on mine as I'm very new to making model kits and don't want to ruin what I have done!!

Very interesting, not heard of S&J before or Jal 43 are they still in production or long gone ar ehard to find? I know that Competition 43 made at DTM Astra so I was going to use this for the Cleland model and I was thinking of converting a Vanguard for the Rover (currently stripping a Arram White one down). Not thought about converting a normal road car Diecast before so definately something to think about. Still keeping you decal situation guarded though!!!

I do have my eye on a couple though, a couple of BMW's no doubt you have seen the Racing Replica's 1992 Tim Harvey, and a different 95 BMW which i have allready bid on.

The Tim Harvey one, well i have been saving up while its been listed, and it might cost a bit.

With regards to signatures on models, i dont have any of mine signed, although if i knew John Cleland i think i would like my Cavaliers and Bathurst Falcon signed by the legend himself.

I only have a couple signed and I can see both points of view, some don't want to ruin the model while having the car signed just makes it a little different.

I don't bother with the signing of the cases as I show my models in cabinets and you wouldn't see the signatures, where as on the model you can see it in the display. I suppose it's just your own preference, my mate thinks it will increase the price of the model, I don't know whether it would. Personally the ones I have signed are the only ones I will do and from my favorite drivers and I will never sell.

One question to all. How many models are you able to display? The wife will allow only 2 cabinets (approx 42 cars) so most are store away (as waste If you ask me!) and I have to change my cabinets from time to time.

However i was also bidding on the Tim Harvey BMW from 1992, and i was winning it by 20 quid right upto the very last 5 seconds of the auction, i was waiting for it to end, refreshing the page every few seconds in anticipitation, only to be outbid right at the bloody end, i am sitting here wondering how the hell that happened, i couldn't get one more bid in before it ended (matter of seconds, i tried and failed) i am pretty fed up with the way that ended, it was an impossible bid, maybe its some kind of computor generated bid from the winner, no idea, but there was litteraly ten seconds or so while i was still winning.... They can speak/email in basic english. You can also try to help the sale along by using google translator.

Using those 2 methods, you can probably get by. that's how I communicated with most buyers when i go through ebay.de

But try to arrange payment via Paypal. Sending other forms of pymt can get very ugly (expensive!!) or dangerous.

maybe, im not familiar with that application, you need to be able to control what size the decals print out at. i use photoshop for mine, with the document set at 300dpi, havent perfected the decals yet.

you buy white and clear waterslide decal paper and print on to that using a photo quality inkjet printer, the bit im struggling is the clear varnish spray - you need to use it to stop the ink coming off the paper when you dip them in water to remove the backing paper, but last time the varnish just stopped the backing paper coming off. Going to try again at some point, just got to find the time.

Small white decals are a prob because its impossible to cut out such small areas from the paper - e.g. drivers name

I think that kind of stuff would be too thick, especially for 1:43 models. It might work well for larger scales though.

I have got 3 of the Mondeo models and whichever option you get the quality is excellant the photos on the website do'nt do it justice

That's great to know, what are they like on postage and how do they accept payment?

You say you have 3, does that mean they do all 3 drivers for that season or have you done your own decals for the other drivers?

I bought 1 built model and 2 pre painted models because I could not have done such a good job on the spraying but with the pre painted model the assembly is quite easy and the decals are very good quality so no problem at all, you do get the decals to do the 3 driver options as well and the model is better quality than spark. I realise that the pictures on the tin wizard site are not the best but that model was made quickly just to get it out and the wheels do fit tighter into the wheelarches to give you the correct ride height, I am very pleased with my models they are the best and almost rarest that I have

Yeah, I have the Brock one, but the '95 wagon with the Aussie flag was cool. So were the blue 850s. The red Brock 850 was very cool. I wanted a REAL red 850 so bad!! That would have been so cool, last year for them was '97 on that bodystyle in NA I believe.

Supposedly, there were a very select and limited amount of 96 BTCC models made available through the dealer channel? It was in an Audi accessory box. At least that's what the Ebay said, the model sold for 90 GBP or US, forget the currency. But regardless, that's still alot of moolah!

I am currently converting a STW Audi A4 into the 96 Frank Biela BTCC car, however it slow progress so far, i have removed most of the unwanted decals but have a few stubborn decals left, ie on the roof the 97 STW car had 'Audi Quattro' written on the roof (both ends of the roof) and i am struggling to get rid of them, most of the other unwanted decals came off using either my thumb nail, or a a bluntish peice of plastic, for example the battery cover on my TV remote.

I have been advised to use two products for my transformation of this model, however i cant seem to get them from anywhere, the local model shop has heard of them but dont stock them, anyone got any idea's?

Micro - Sol, and Micro - Set. Also where could i buy 'liquid decal' from?

you buy white and clear waterslide decal paper and print on to that using a photo quality inkjet printer, the bit im struggling is the clear varnish spray - you need to use it to stop the ink coming off the paper when you dip them in water to remove the backing paper, but last time the varnish just stopped the backing paper coming off. Going to try again at some point, just got to find the time.

Small white decals are a prob because its impossible to cut out such small areas from the paper - e.g. drivers name

I went to Race Retro this weekend and was chatting to a guy from a model club about producing decals. His advise was to print them out as normal then apply liquid decal film over the print before adding a layer of acrylic varnish. He said this would stop the colour run and it shouldn't stick to the decal sheet. Also if you have a great printer (that prints white) you can do the names without having to do the letters individually. He had produced quite a few using this method and they looked excellent.

I hope this does work and if anybody (Neil Adams and PDS mainly!!!!) does try it and it works can they let me know. I haven't the time at the moment and I've got another 20 ish kits to make beofe I need to do my own!!!

Yes.. In his only outing at Knockhill in 1992 http://www.stillphotography.co.uk/gallery/v/Motorsport-Photography/saloon/btcc/album25/92_mccrae_knock_w.jpg.html
If you compare the image with the model...The decals have been applied wrong as well.

I can't imagine buying a replica model that is overly wrong. It's not a replica model anymore, it just becomes a fantasy model. But everyone can choose what they collect. :D

I have all of the racing replicas Cavaliers, and they are among my favourites in my collection, especially the 93 Cleland and the 94 Smith cars.
Cavaliers and James Bond 007 BMWs generally cost the most to buy! Actually, anything from Racing Replica costs a lot considering they've now gone bankrupt!

I actually added a new car to my collection last week, first one in ages. Its not BTCC though. A 1994 BMW 320i, Italian Superturismo Championship, Ravaglia (Minichamps).

Do you have the 1994 Cleland Cavalier. I managed to get this 1 by pure chance as I didn't even know they made the 1994 1. I picked it up for £22.50 but technically free as I bought the 93 Cleland Cavalier at the same time for £18.50 and just sold it for £48. This has to be the best buy I've had I reckon. It always pays to look worldwide on ebay I think. :p :

Motorpro models go for a fair wack as well, I'm lucky enough to have 4 of them (Rouse and Gravett 1990 Sierra's, Gravett 1991 Sierra and Harvey 1992 BMW). I was also lucky to find a couple of Rae models a couple of years back, the 1993 BMW's of Neal and Portman. I haven't seen these for such a long time and wonder how much they might now go for.

Yep i do, i bought the 93 and 94 works Cavaliers (Cleland) and the 94 Nigel Smith Cavalier as a three car bundle, £100 for the trio. I then added the 1993 David Leslie Ecure Ecose Cavalier at a later date. There is also another 93 Ecure Ecose Cavalier, the car Harry Nuttal drove, just a different name and number, i have the Leslie version.

The dearest one i have bought would be my 1995 Goldeneye BMW, its a minichamps dealer edition, i bought the 1996 BMW from Germany, relativly cheaply. My Minichamps Volvo 850 esate cost a fair bit too. While i got a bit lucky with a 1995 Kelvin Burt Mondeo which was fairly cheap.

Motorpro also produced the Ford Mondeo's of Matt Neal, Charlie Cox and Richard Kaye from 1995! And Will Hoy's championship winning M3 from 1991.

The photo doesn't do it justice as the model looks better close up, but the front isn't quite right as as you said it look a little squashed (not as good as a Minichamps), but still a great model.

Yes they both have Standard seats and no real interior and Yes they are 1/43 scale.

I didn't realise that Motorpro did the Hoy model, did they make the Mondeos as well as Minichamps as I've never seen them?

They converted minichamps mondeos! In fact all the Motorpro cars were converted models with the exception of the Gravett Sapphire from 1991, which was a white metal made model.

It's because that the same bidder had bid on the car but still hasn't met the reserve price, as he is the only one the price will remain at 1p until A. someone else bids, then the price will go up B. he has another go and meets the reserve price.

Just checked it over and it's actually the Sir John Whitmore winning 1965 ETCC Cortina. It's also is very good condition with only a couple of scrape marks on the roof. Doesn't quite fit in with my BTCC collection but still a great find. Now I've got to consider whether to keep it (and maybe collect ETCC cars) or to sell it.

And I've also just bought a 1997 Rydell Volvo on ebay

Yeah, the Cool Fire car looked familiar. There are decal kits to replicate many teams that raced in the STW, but were not produced by minichamps. I think the time period is generally after the STW became a largely indepdendent series after most of the Works teams pulled out.

That is quite an impressive model, I've converted 2 cars, but they were obviously a very crude job compared to yours. A Macau/Biela Audi A4 and a Macau Juicy Fruit BMW E30.

Also if my memory serves me correctly Spark were due to make 3 MG ZS's of Hughes (2002) Turkington (2003) and Reid (2004) but it was canned just after Rover/MG went bust (I had them on pre-order with RCS!!). Are they re considering making them? Or do you know something we dont??!!!! :D

I dont know how it works regarding using the MG brand on models and cant speak on RCS's behalf, but he has alot of contacts in the model trade and who knows, it may even be NAC MG giving the approval.

Just email that address, the +ve responses he has the better it is.
The original run was for 2000 models, but this run will be for 500 models, making them rarer and more sought after.

I imagine a couple of BTCC racers and roadgoing car. Once a shell has been made, you can make all the liveries I suppose. Theres been quite a few. MG Xpower, Atomic Kitten, Hotwheels Racing, 04 Silver and Black Indy Livery, Team RAC and the 4 x Kartworld variations!!

Keep sending the emails, the more response the better.

Well I have shown my interest and replied and it would be great if they could make all of the above. Might mean 2 casts though because of the different front splitters.

Also pick up a Brookes Peugeot 406 from 97.

Excellent model
Did you make it yourself? What base model did you use? and did you make the decals yourself?

I used a diecast race version of an Integra and had it converted to BTCC spec and I had the decals made by a specialist decal company and applied them myself

I didn't know there was a race version Integra!! CAn I ask who this company was as I'd be very interested to know as I can't seem to make my own (as I've had great difficulty finding someone to do it) Can I also be really rude and ask how much is cost as the only quote I had was £100 to produce one and then I can to get a certain number produced! Thanks

wow, a specialist decal company? That must have cost quite a bit of money? But it looks great, you could probably even make a bit of money by selling it!

Ebbro make a diecast race version of the Integra and yes it is expensive to get it converted and even more expensive to get top quality decals made and here are some more photos

The spoiler on it looks really out of place and spoils it. I don't think I'll be rushing to get one like it.
