Lenny Krevitz - Fly Away

For the record: most of my musical interest lies in traditional music (Irish, American Old-Time, Scottish) but a heavy fraction is also jazz (swing and dixieland, not so much be-bop), blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters), singer/songwriter (David Gray), techno/ambient (The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Mogwai) and reggae/ska (The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, Taj Mahal).

I also do a lot of listening to classic rock (Clapton, Young, Dylan and, perhaps most importantly, J.J. Cale) and good pop (Michael Jackson, The Bangles, anything out of the 80s really).

I've never warmed to classical music and have come to accept my lack of interest in the genre after I studied it for a few months and aquired and understanding for it. You can't like everything. Another genre I haven't really got a heart for is heavy metal and also much of the new pop sh!t that is churned out on the airwaves these days.

I'm a musician myself and music is my main interest in life, more so than motorsport :cheese:

I was going to ask you why you haven't warmed up to classical music? Did your study of this genre cause you to be burned out by it, or did it simply not click with you?

Also, you said you're a musician: do you mind if I ask what instrument you play? I play the bass guitar myself (and some piano). I feel that my playing of this instrument caused me to be biased towards music that feature bass moreso than others. Instrument-wise, metal/hard rock bands like Metallica (when C. Burton was alive), Rush, Tool, Primus, Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, etc. and non-metal/rock guys like Jaco Pastorius have always appealed to me because of how they used this instrument. Even music that doesn't have bass as an instument, but still have a bass sound through a synthesizer, has appealed to me as well: For example, Aphex Twin's basslines sound great to me.

Well, I study Irish music & Dance in university at the moment, but we study other types of music as linked modules. We also study music technology, Irish history, Irish language and some other related cultural and musical subjects. And, so, last year, one of those modules was "Western Art Music and Ballet". We looked through the time-line of Western Art Music: from medieval church music (which I actually did find interesting) right up to Arnold Schoenberg and John Cage.
I always found Classical music (using the term lightly and mainly referring to post-Baroque music) to simply be too boring for me to listen to. Yes, I do respect the musicians' technicality and the composer's ingenuity. However, I don't get a "buzz" off the music. I can't get much feeling from it or an insight into the musician's personality (which is what I look for in the music I listen to, generally). I get that with blues and traditional music. I'd be more for a raw sound in music (hence my traditional music interests) as opposed to the clinical, arranged sound. Spontaneity is an important element for me and classical music is devoid of this.

I play a range of string instruments. The tenor banjo is my main instrument but I also play the mandolin, guitar [a few tunings] and bouzouki semi-regularly. Other than strings, I play the wooden simple-system flute and tin whistle. I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet (no pun intended) but this might give you an idea of why I like what I like and why other music doesn't appeal to me. It's similar to you with your bass-bias.

And, speaking of bass, have you heard Victor Wooten? Now that guy is amazing and, hey, he happens to play with a banjo player ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YLo3wH8dsk[/url] <- not that clip but the same guys.

Thanks for your honest assessment of classical music. Most people I know, where I live, who claim to listen to classical music are typically smuggy-liberals who pat themselves on the back for listening to it, but I question if they themselves know why they like this genre of music. The most common answer these people give me is "the music speaks to me". Personally, I like classical music as driving music in the morning when I'm going to school/work and as music to put on when I'm doing chores around my house or cooking and eating dinner for myself. For the most part, it serves the purpose of background noise for me, and helps soothe me and allows me to be calm and collected when I'm going to do something like giving a speech to my professor and my fellow classmates in my public speaking course I take in the morning.

And yes, Victor Wooten is a great bassist. My only problem is that he involves himself with a lot of different projects (outside of his main band, Bela Fleck and the Fleckstones), making it difficult for me to keep track of all the music he does. But that's a testament to how other muscians like his style and how they want to work with him. Also, I like his philosophy towards music: "the instrument doesn't make the music, you do".
