Been doing various club style events (hill climbs, AHG sprint series, track days, motorkhanas) for the last six months with my Evo IX and decided I'd try something a little more involved, so I've entered the WA round of the Dutton series. Not a full on rally obviously but I'm really looking forward to it.

Some pretty reasonable drivers entered from across the country so I'll be interested to see how I compare with them.

I was going to attend, but ended up going to a friends bday which i wasn't told about until the last minute. Nice watching such events.

Well had a great weekend. Managed to get 7th outright in the drivers event which was pretty satisfying considering I had to drive on a constantly slipping clutch from the end of day 2.

Got to say the event was a lot of fun from an official's point of view too - nothing quite beats standing out in the rain at AHG on a Saturday watching the planes, the trains and alleged drivers proving how little they know about driving :D

what can i do to compete? do i need a roll cage?

Not for the Dutton events. Not a requirement.

Any street legal car can compete.

I'm sure there would be smaller club level events in whichever state you're in as well. Sprint series/motorkhanas/Hill climbs etc.

Standing in a forest in Finland beats that :p Although it would be better with aircraft flying over.

damn, just got a new car mmm...hot hatch... and wanna take it and do an event that my car will be allowd to comepete in with out roll cage. :) If anyone lives in Perth and knows??? Throw me a line! Thanks,

Non-caged car would allow you into just about any speed event - hill climbs, super sprints etc.

If in Perth then the sprint series at MC Motorsport at AHG or the AMR Speed Event Series (at various locations) would be your best places to start. Just avoid a Speed Event Series round that I am stewarding on please! If you want to do the Dutton Rally next year then getting some practice in on other events before then would be recommended.

I've done a few SES events this year. Did the Mt.Clarence/Windfarm hillclimb and also the Barb's Sprint. Managed 2nd outright to Tony Flood at Windfarm thanks to the rain putting the fear of god into the open wheel drivers.

However, it was also Windfarm that put the heebies up me because coming over that last hill before the time control in 5th and leaving the ground was a little scary without a cage.

So now I'm either going to gut my road IX and cage it etc or if I can sell it for the right price, import a IX GT or VIII RS and build a dedicated car.

Matt if you want to start in motorsport, Perth is awash with events pretty much every weekend. For most of the events I'm listing below all you need is a CAMS Level 2S or 2NS license which you can obtain simply by joining a CAMS affiliated car club, filling in a form and paying $88 for a year. You'll generally need a 1kg fire extinguisher securely mounted (I recommend a metal mount) within easy reach of the driver for the events as well. Finally you have to wear non-flammable long sleeves, long pants and have a helmet that adheres to AS1698 (I think that's the right number) and closed in shoes.

Car will need to be scrutineered for the majority of these events to differing levels. Most of the time as long as it's roadworthy you're ok. If in doubt about the requirements ask the organisers before paying your entry fee.

Here's a few of the bigger places/events you can participate in:

MC Motorsports http://www.dtec.com.au
The MC Motorsport Events held at AHG. These include the Motorkhana (witches hat courses) series and the Sprint Series (circuit). They also run performance driver courses ($70 odd) and tuning arvos on Fridays for $40.

Belmont Max Action motorkhanas
Norbert is taking a bit of a break at the moment, but I believe he'll be restarting his motorkhana series sometime in October. Fun little events that are run in the carpark at Belmont racecourse on a Sunday once a month. Pretty cheap. About $60 a pop. These boys run a track night at Barbagello on a Thursday night once a month. They run the short circuit during Winter and both the long and the short once the days are long enough during summer. Cost is $150 per person. Best thing about these guys is that they have instructors available to you for the whole night to sit in the car with you. WA Sporting Car Club http://www.wascc.com.au
The sporting car club have tuning days once a month if you're a member. $50 for a day on the track at Barbagello with your own car. Costs about $200 to join the WASCC for a year as a sliver member. Gets you in free to all events on at Barbs for the year as well, so even if you don't compete and like to watch races it's not too bad value.

Speed Event Series http://www.speedeventseries.com
SES run a series of events ranging from Hill Climbs to Sprints all over the state. Great bunch of guys and well organised. Costs about $80-$120 per event depending on where/what it is. You will see all sorts of cars at these events. Give out great little trophies :)

Dutton Rally http://www.duttonrally.com
National series comprised of rounds in four states. The events go over three days and are comprised of a combination of motorkhanas, circuit sprints and 1/8 or 1/4 mile drags. You can just do one if you like. Starting to get a little pricier here. Entry was $2.7k for two people this year or about $2k.

Classic Rally http://www.classicrally.com.au
Similar concept to the Dutton, but not run on quite as good courses. Much cheaper. Think it was about $1kish for the 2 or 3 days. Bit of organisational chaos this year. Have heard similar from previous years as well. Has a bit of a bad rap here in Perth at the moment.

Targa West http://www.targawest.com
One off tarmac rally run near Perth. Really starting to get expensive here and now you need to have a car that adheres to CAMS specs and a Level 3 CAMS license Entry is about $5k. I believe there are two levels of competition. Caged and non-caged. The non-caged is limited to a particular top speed I think. This a pretty serious event and attracts top level competitors from around the country.

I belive there are khanacrosses organised by the Light Car Club as well, but I don't know much about those.

Oh and of course if you're into "the drags" there is Kwinana. Not my cup of tea.

They have a Whoop Arse Wednesday where you can run your car down the quarter mile as many times as you can get back to the start line for $40. I've been twice to see how upgrades to my car have affected performance and that's it. But some people really love it. Season was supposed to start again this week I think, but they have run over time on repairs/upgrades to the track by the looks of it.
