View Full Version : Weather reports for the Winter-Rallies

M5
17th December 2006, 18:35
Please post reports on weather conditions in the areas where the winter rallies in 07.

The european weather is changing, also in areas that for 10-20 had stable winterconditions from November to March - That is no longer the case.

That is why it would be nice to be kept posted by the locals on how the ice-and snowconditions are on the SS's for the rallies in Sweden and Norway !

Doesen't look good around the Rally Norway stages right now it's 5- and just som icy spots, maybe snow on tuesday but i think the winter is realy close now and remember two months until the rallys

Karlstad is -2 degrees celsius and has fallen a few, VERY FEW, flakes of snow today. But in practice there is no snow on the ground and not very frozen ground either. However, the conditions may change a thousand times before the Swedish Rally so I don't see any reason to worry!

I worry: this is the warmest autumn in 10 000 years in this area according to DMI, the Danish Meteorologic Institute. Regardles of the reason, something is happening.
We have seen very warm autumns in the past few years, and amazingly the Swedish rally has fixed it, saved by the bell at some times but anyway!
but if it continues like this... 7-8 degrees and a pure gravel-rally, RAC style... :( Hmm... The only ice we´ll see is maybe the one in the GT...

For "Monte-Carlo" Rally, on stages around Burzet : Rainy and foggy today no snow - 6°/1° during the night but temperatures may go down.

will be interesting to see what happens. A few weeks ago SMHI (Swedish forecast something) said that there was 85% chance of snow in Karlstad on Christmas but a few days ago they made a new prediction saying there was 0% of a white christmas here in Karlstad :p It's going to change and change again before the rally. I'm not overly worried yet. Not time to worry yet.

Does not matter if there is no snow in Karlstad as long as there is snow on stages around Hagfors ;) and it looks like it stays under 0° almost the whole week there.

true, but if there's snow in Karlstad there will definately be snow up there :) oh and now we have a stage in Karlstad too! hehe

Looking good for Rally Norway so far, with good Ice sole, but still not enough snow to high snpw banks to lean on - but that can come of course.

-2 till -8 C in the rally area for tomorrow, and more snow.

More worried about the Swedish round, was to be +4 in Karlstad tomorrow, and I am not sure what the contitions are like.
Could any of the Swedes pls update on that ?

Karlstad is about 100km south from the area where stages are so I would not be that worried about the weather in there....but as far as I know situation could be better around Hagfors ... here is a webcam link to Törsby, close to where some of the stages are and as you can see some snow would do good... http://194.23.40.122/view/view.shtml

http://www.smhi.se/sgmain/vinter/snotacke/snotacke.html

here you can see a map of Sweden and where there is snow. not looking very good right now... (Malung is slightly more north than the most northern stage Likenäs, I think) the map updates every now and again, so keep checking back About +4-5 and rain during the days for a few days forward (Karlstad & Hagfors) a bit colder in the nights and morning, with maybe some snow, but that'll melt away during the day and in the rain.

certainly. Right now, the weather in NZ is rather like that experienced during the 2005 round, warm, dry and sunny with hardly any clouds.

First big snowfall for the year in Obihiro, last night.
This is 3 weeks later than usual.
We have about 30cm of snow on the ground and more falling today.
Still, it's some time until Rally Japan!

Seriously though there is a big chance of snow on some of the stages in October.

At last, some snow has fallen on the Vargåsen stage (Sweden) yesterday, maybe 5 cm. Not a lot, a since it is a month to go til the rally, it will probably disappear and new snow will fall 3-4 times. But at least, it looks better than the gray rainy landscape we had here a couple of days ago.

You can run longer term models on this site http://www.weatherunderground.com/modelmaps/maps.asp?model=GFS&domain=EU and at the moment it gives forecast till Tuesday night of the rally week...just use 2mAG level and Europe domain, add a map and animate...easy to learn

Why you come here to read the threads? You only have to wait by the end of rally and look at the final classification. Until then is a waste of time discuss and people could stay bored. :D :D

Any update about the weather in Sweden?

Viktory
1st February 2007, 19:06
Yesterday it rained in Karlstad but the same amount of snow is still here, now it is just a lot harder and a lot more icy, since the snow that melted froze overnight. It's supposed to get a little milder in the weekend but according to some reports from the stages that is good as some gravel is protruding from under the snow, milder weather followed by cold weather will make a nice ice surface. I think it will get colder next week again. The rain that came here yesterday was snow up by the stages I believe.

But no snow banks makes the road wider and they don't have to vory about hooking the front in the snow

However the case is, Marcus and Seb were hoping for nice big snowbanks to lean on, so I take their word for it and think its better with banks.

Viktory
5th February 2007, 20:45
of course it is better with banks. I have heard that the banks are a bit bigger than that shown in the pictures from Colin's in other places though.

Didn't they have virtual spectator compare Marcus' driving on one stage, Fredricksberg I think it was, from different years? One year, he had snowbanks and the other he didn't. And he was faster without them.

That's not to say that snowbanks don't make it more spectacular.
