Given that they started running I thought I'll start a thread for this weekend.
There is live timing at http://www.f1.com , but most of you know it already.

Both Toyotas doing many laps, whereas some drivers are still in pits. Probably very dusty still.

ioan

Alonso, Hamilton, Kimi, Felipe, Nick, Ralf, Jarno and Fisi.
Expecting Kubica to throw in a better time.

Do any of the other Canadians on the board loathe the fact that the race is titled GP DU CANADA (In French, as it is in Montreal) whereas Near 70% of the population of the country claims English?

Is this due to the Quebec law that prohibits English in the predominant signing of a business?

I propose the CANADIAN GP

ioan
8th June 2007, 16:36
Well we call it Canadian GP in the forum and I think we should care less about what language is used as long as the racing is fine.

What happened to Kubica, only 2 laps after 85 minutes.
Did he become a champion? :D

MW threw in a qualy simulation at the end of FP1.

Why shouldn't it be called the GP du Canada? The race is held in a predominantly francophone city in a primarily francophone province and the name is in one of the country's official languages. If it were called the GP du Canada despite being held in western Canada, you might have a point.

But it's not the GP du Montreal, or the GP du Quebec, it's the Canadian Grand Prix, a race that represents the country (a predominantly English speaking country) on the world stage.

Maybe they should call it GP du Quebec, that way there would be nothing wrong about it! :D

Canada is an officially bilingual country so if a title is in French or English, what is the problem? The French is more suited to the local population, which makes up a big part of the market for the race and surrounding events. Bilingualism goes two ways - it's not just francophones learning English.

Yes, and last time I checked, Canada had both French and English as its official languages.

You not happy with that?

Anway, Webber is currently on top, and he had a respectable fifth place in the first practice as well.

Maybe his fortunes will change this race?

davidalbert
8th June 2007, 19:28
Morning or afternoon or what ever it is were ever you are.

Webber's Redbull is looking strong. Ihope they have got on top of their reliablity problems, Hamilton just keeps on surprising.

davidalbert
8th June 2007, 19:49
The Ferrari's don't seem to be going that well, maybe they are foxing.
Amased that Webber is staying up there that long. If he has genuine speed then qualy's will be very interesting.Go Mark Go.

N. Jones
8th June 2007, 19:59
I can't believe it! BOTH Toro Rosso's are in the top ten in the 2nd practice session!

I also can't believe that Kubica is screwing the pooch - 14th. I don't think he looked very good in prac1 either.

I guess Ralf gave up... 20th with a 1:20.9.

Anybody out there know why Kovalianen stopped on track?

davidalbert
8th June 2007, 20:16
Why did kovalainen stop, any one know.

aryan
8th June 2007, 20:17
Webber was admittedly running light when he posted those times. He is now down to 6th and could not improve on his time.

Ferarri is either 1+ s slower than McLaren, or sandbagging.

Renault seems to be getting closer to BMW.

aryan
8th June 2007, 20:18
I guess Ralf gave up... 20th with a 1:20.9.

Anybody out there know why Kovalianen stopped on track?

Ralf really does like that number 20, doesn't he?

He is clinging to it with teeth and nails :D

N. Jones
8th June 2007, 20:21
Yeah, I'm bashin' Ralf again - only 11 laps on track? Trulli only did 13... Is the Toyota THAT bad???

Webber still in the top ten but what happened to DC - 15th?

donKey jote
8th June 2007, 20:24

aryan

Yep, that Toyota is that bad.

DC isn't having a fine day, is he?

8th June 2007, 20:43
It looks like the li'l feller got some good brakes. :D If he hadn't he'd have tasted Ralf's right rear Bridgestone.

Reckon he's using Brembos?

N. Jones
8th June 2007, 20:43
Trulli lost a wheel??

I think it was '05 when Trulli's brakes gave up the ghost on the back straight.
I also seem to remember he was either 3rd or 4th at the time...

aryan
8th June 2007, 20:45

Also, what happened to Kubica? I don't know his final placings but it didn't sound like he was going to well and he has been quick all season so it would be strange if he was far back.

It was? Their program schedule said it was on at 2:00est... Looks like I will have to wait for qualifying to see if they show some highlights from practice...

blakebeatty
9th June 2007, 03:21
I think in the US, that you would likely still see it on Speed, just in Canada we get robbed on TV coverage when canadian networks buy the rights to programming. like the superbowl for example will be carried on a canadian network (CTV) with advertising sold by CTV, so that we miss all of the hilarious commercials you guys see, and instead get commercials for Main Street Mattress Source and such... Same with the Daytona 500, and such.

Unless they **** up, this will be an easy 1-2 for McLarens.

Not so easy. Right now they're 1-3.

And don't forget McLaren engines pushed more than neccesary at Monaco, and it can pay here.

I'm expecting a sudden "misterious" Ferrari recovery today.

McLarens will be 1-2 in qualy, im pretty sure of that (unless they decide to fuel up one driver a lot, which wouldnt make sense considering how hard this track is for brakes and tyres)

McLarens engines werent pushed more than the Ferrari engines at Monaco.

Räikkönen seems to be the lightest if we compare the times of Q2 and Q3?

But anyway - it seems more and more obvious that Ferrari is missing Team Schumacher. Some have denied it, but to me it looks more and more undeniable.

My current thought is that the 2008 title battle will be between McLaren and BMW...

:D BMW's always had very STRONG ENGINES... well suited to high speed tracks. Sauber also has come a long way in chassis development since being aquired by BMW.

;) Still... I would rank them behind both McLaren & Ferrari and currently ahead of Renault. Renault may be suffering from the lack of having a good number 1 driver... but currently, BMW is a bit stronger, as a team.

Maybe it's not fair to say, and please don't complain me, but IF Michael would've been racing the ferrari this year, I'm sure he would kick McLaren's Ass

Pity the forum was down during the quali.

It was an exciting quali, and Hamilton did the job. Alonso made a msitake in his last attempt. He was beaten by LH today both in practice and quali.

Ferrari didn't pull out a rabbit out of their hat... I am surprised. Either they are very heavy (unlikely) or they have fallen behind McLaren. Interesting to see BMW mix it with the big 4. Nick has been very quick this weekend. His last quali attempt in Q2 was marvelous, after the stewards had deleted his previous time. It was a all-or-nothing lap, and boy did he dliver.

Truli P10 and Ralf at P18. No surprises there.

Good quali by Mark webber. DC has had a very ragged weekend, he isn't happy with the car and can't match mark. We'll see how the race goes, both in terms of Mark's long-run pace and his car's reliability.

Great job by Sato again. P11 is a good starting place, and a solid race might bring the team one or two more points. 'Mysterious' is the best word to describe what Ant claims has happened to him, suddenly losing tyre in his last attempt in Q1.

The Renault mechanics should be very disappointed after getting that car back on track, only to see their boy Heikki drop out of Q1. He is havivng a tough debut isn't he?

Good job by Roseberg as well, and Barichello outqualifying Button once more.

Now, it's time to wait and see...the race.

I think rosberg, webber etc are running quite light. Interesting with BMW, could heidfeld be on a light fuel load and kubica on a heavy fuel load in 8th. They seem to be mixing it up a lot.

Can't wait for the race tonight

Yep, I don't remember a season where Ferrari started with the fastest car just for them to be overtaken after 4 races! They were always able to improve faster than their competitors.

Let's hope for a good race.

Garry Walker
10th June 2007, 16:52
as always, my prediction was right for qualy.
My prediction for the race - The only chance Ferraris have to beat one of the McLarens is if that McLaren gets stuck behind Heidfeld after 1st corner. Otherwise, the maccas will run away with it.

Lets hope ron wont give team-orders again to help alonso.

Different crime, different punishment... I think the FIA consider it more dangerous exiting ONTO the track when the red light is on, rather than pitting when the safety car is out. It was the same punishment JPM had 2 years ago so at least we can't moan about the FIA being inconsistent!!

Get well soon to Robert, it really was a terrifying crash, one of the worst i've seen for ages!

And finally, well done to Lewis for breaking the duck - I never thought he would be in contention for the title this year but I really can't see a reason why not, he's been the most consistent of the top 4 all year!!

N. Jones

True, or his first off in the 1st turn caused damage to the car, thus all the following mistakes he made... Who knows. I don't think Hamilton is really getting to him...Alonso has already won 2 Championships...It's not like he's desparate for another...I doubt it. But, the season has a long way to go, I'm sure Hamilton will have a bad day or 2 somewhere along the way... If not, then maybe he really is the next MS...We shall see. :D
