View Full Version : Driver of the day - Monaco GP

So - who was the most spectacular driver at that quite eventless Monaco Grand Prix?

Scott Speed would IMO be a strong candidate - hands down, superb drive! In the last laps I even hoped that someone in front of him would retire to allow the American to finish in the points. :D He is given too few credit and I don't get it why some think (Berger included) that he doesn't deserve to be in F1.

Besides, also great drive by a well-known Monaco specialist Fisichella.

Yeah, Alonso too. But it's in my nature to highlight the drives of those, who are not winners at the moment. :)

Alonso, pole, fastest lap and second Monaco in a row in different cars. All under massive pressure from the next best Lewis.
Congrats Fisi & Wurz on their hard earned points :)

Kubica or Wurz for me.

Alonso did well for sure but as the commentator pointed it out, it seemed that Lewis was not allowed by the team to try his chances even if he seemed the faster one of the two.

Alonso, like a lot of the rest of people, he did what he needed to do and didn't do anything more, which is how you win championships.

I definitely think it was Fernando Alonso, he responded to everything Hamilton could throw at him today and drove like the double world champion he is.
Good performances by Alex Wurz and Scott Speed too.

Kubica or Wurz for me.

Heidfeld was having an upper hand over Kubica, but BMW's weird strategy destroyed Nick's race. :\ BMW probably hoped for Safety Car and decided to make an early stop with one car. In Australia they hoped the same and again Heidfeld had a poor strategy. Damn. He could have fought with Fisichella for fourth.

I thought they all drove pretty well as only 2 drivers managed to crash out. I know f1 drivers are supposed to be the best of the best, but I never really expected so many of them to last the distance.

It didn't do him harm for 5 races in a row. I would like to see Kimi doing the same thing.

All drivirs do something wrong during the season: it's impossible to do a perfect championship, and Hamilton must have some problems... (If he hasn't, it would be better: I support him since I saw a karting race some years ago...)

As your second sentence: it's impossible to see Kimi doing the same thing, that's obvious :D

The driver of the race for me was... ME...

That race was so boring, I swear I slept threw atleast a third of it, and during some of those naps, I dreamt I was racing, and doing real well (running P1 in a Spyker) :cheese:

Seriously now... For me, I would split it with Fisi and Speed. Had the little incident that got Hamilton's tires looking a pit champcarish (red paint on the side...) had been a little more serious, we could have seen a Renault on the podium, and a Toro Rosso in the points!!!

Well he finished next to his very highly considered (by some) team mate.

In fact RS went from last to 16th while JT managed the performance to go from 14th to 15th! Hardly better I would say.

Though he did a great job again

Yeah, well the Toyotas ARE rubbish. They keep going backward.

Fair point ioan, I expected Truli to trash RS here, which is considered his specialty. He didn't, which I think just shows how crap this Toyota is, that both of them I think just gave up.

That team needs some change...SOON.

Alonso for not making a single mistake all race long and looking to be in control at all times.

Wurz for also driving an error-free race and employing a perfect one-stop-strategy to claim 7th from 11th place on the grid.

Speed for making up 9 places and almost scoring his first points in F1.

All in all, one of the dullest races at Monaco I have ever seen - no-one even seems to try to pass anyone on track anymore...

jens
27th May 2007, 18:16
I wonder, how Ralf felt driving in the last position. I don't remember him ever driving there...

And Jarno looked pretty anxious at his pitstop. I'd imagine that he better wanted to step out of the car and go home.

Toyota wasn't that poor even on their debut season. :dozey: Heck, Salo qualified 9th and McNish 10th at Monaco!

I don't think so.
NH quallyfied 0,1 s faster than RK, but he pits on 32th lap while RK on 45th!
RK stuck behind slow Barrichello and Wurz while NH had no one in front.
RK had fastest lap 1:16.006, 3rd overall, while NH 1:17.041, 12th overall.
And RK had breaks problem at the beginning and at the end he was without traction control.

Are You sure You were watching Monaco GP? ;P

No. Because he quallified 20th while hes teammate was 14th and 22th Albers didn't finish one lap. Because RS did it again. And Because he finished 16th, 17th was Sato and 18th Davidson, who had drive through penalty. 4 drivers retired. It's realy impresive style!

It could have been Kubica in that situation.

I voted for Alonso simply because he proved quickest under any circumstance during the race, kept his cool, was fastest in quals (most important here) and drove an impeccable race. Normally I would look for heroics from somebody in midfield or even from the tail end, but this time I had to go with the winner.

http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2007/05/28/dennis_we_decided_alonso_would_win/

Ron Dennis admitted that the McLaren team decided in advance that Fernando Alonso would win the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton. The McLaren boss said that it was frustrating having to make the call but claims that the possibility of the safety car coming out demanded a change of strategy.

"An outstanding result for the team. Both Fernando and Lewis drove so well and responded excellently to the team's wishes of bringing both cars home safely in what was a memorable one-two result and McLaren's 14th victory in the Principality," Dennis said.

"However there is some disappointment because of the different strategies we needed to follow to cope with a potential deployment of the Safety Car which has happened four times in the last five years. Consequently you virtually have to decide in advance which one of the team's two drivers will claim the victory."

Lewis Hamilton fought hard through out the race to allow his one-stop strategy to give him the lead only for his team to change him to a two stop programme.

"Once the first round of pitstops had taken place we reverted Lewis from a one-stop strategy to the faster two-stop strategy and at the same time slowed both cars down to conserve the brakes. As a team we would like to race but this circuit requires a disciplined approach and as a result we can leave Monte Carlo with the maximum amount of points," Dennis added.

Sorry to disappoint you Trqster (http://www.motorsportforums.com/forums/member.php?u=81934), your article is sh!t.

There is nothing from RD's quotes warranting that sensationalist headline.

It was a tough call between 1-stop and 2-stops here, those who finished 5, 7, 8 can attest to the effectiveness of 1-stop strategy in certain situations.

And when it became apparent that 2-stops was more useful to Lewis, his strategy was flexible enough to provide this.

It's disappointing that the standards of journalism have fallen so low.

I'd have to go with Fiero 5.7 as driver of the day. Over the course of the day, he was able, despite rain, to complete all the planned programs in a pickup truck, a 4-wheeler atv, a riding mower, a motorcycle, and a boat. In addition, he fearlessly passed many a vehicle between home and the marina in the pickup without having to rely upon pitstops. He had no broken gearboxes, wires, hydraulics, and at all times the complete set of required wheels were properly secured in place.

The man is incredible.

It's a tough one. Alonso didn't put a foot wrong all day. Hamilton raced well and was very exciting to watch but seemed very slow at the beginning of the race and couldn't seem to match Alonso's pace. Massa raced well too but Ferrari were not on McLaren's level today. Fisichella had a solid race if not a little "behind the scenes" over the course of the race. Watching Kubica and Heidfeld battle for the few points was very interesting too. Hats off to both drivers who did an excellent job. Kimi had a tough job, starting from 16th but Schumacher managed to get up from last to 5th last year and Speed was up to 9th from 18th. I was expecting a little more from Kimi, considering his raw talent. Speed was very surprising. It was great to see him almost into the points. He kept making progress as the race went on.

Driver of the day is a tough one but I think I'll give it to Speed. Alonso appeared slightly pressured by Hamilton and, although this race can show Lewis who is No. 1 (Alonso), I reckon Alonso may feel Hamilton breathing down his neck, and he won't like that.

I voted Fisi - it was a relatively uneventful and unnoticed drive from 4th to 4th - but he was miles ahead of his teammate throughout, and I can't really say that about anyone else except Massa (and that was because of Kimi's qualifying problems). I can't really give it to either of the McLarens since the car was so utterly dominant at Monaco, I don't know how much of that was down to the two drivers.

Speed a close second.

Schnell (http://www.motorsportforums.com/forums/member.php?u=88501), i know you are upset, but most of us who didn't see the incident here on TV have to accept the Stewards' decision, and they clearly saw something wrong with the way Ant drove in Monaco.

Today's F1 cars can not get that close to the car in front, even if they are lapping them. Ant shouldn't expect Massa to be slipstreaming behind him befoe he gets over.

As for Alonso, we will never knowe if LH could have taken him, both in Quali ( making him drive heavier) and the race ( team orders), therefore my vote goes to Speed, Wurz, Kubica

As to LH, peoplel are already forgetting his rookie status and outstanding drives and considering him a top tier driver. To the point where finishing 2nd doesn't merit driver of the race. Normally this would be considered a gross oversight, but in this case, I suppose it is a compliment of the highest kind, when people expect you to finish 1,2 or 3 in every race :)
