I would love to see a muddy gravel ERC Rally GB as a substitute for a WRC round, but this proposed asphalt event would certainly do!

So now Poland is rumoured to be re-joining the WRC next year, Rali Ceredigion looks like it may join the ERC and the promoter has said before they want to add a round in France - any news on which round might come in? I'm hoping it's not the ERT-counting Rallye d'Antibes - Côte d'Azur as then both France and Portugal would basically have the same rally (but different times of year) for both the WRC and ERC 🙄

More positive news regarding the prospect of Rali Ceredigion joining the ERC, but I don’t like the sound of Rajd Polski being both an ERC and WRC round - surely the ERC will be overshadowed by the WRC???

Didnt really work in Cataluyna and even though the promoter is the same the ERC round will be lost in the Rally 1 centric ether.

Why you think Rally Poland will be both WRC and ERC? We have much more events in our country:) 2016-2017 Rally Poland (gravel) was in Mikołajki, and Rajd Rzeszowski (tarmac) in ERC. Now tarmac rally should be different.

True, Rajd Rzeszowski could return. Re-reading the statements about Poland it’s not as clear as I first thought that ‘Rally Poland’ will be in the ERC too, but that ‘Poland’ will still be in the ERC too

But with Rzeszowki it would be 5 tarmac events. Idk if ERC would want that.

THere was an interview earlier this year (not sure if it was on DirtFish podcast?) where it was said that ERC was pushing for a round in France in '24. Maybe thats the place taking over Poland's spot.
Someone suggested on reddit that Latvia and Estonia would be exchanging positions... thats interesting to Keep Estonia around

Hayden Paddon says the ERC is the best value for money rally Championship in the world. Its half the cost of WRC2 and with similar live coverage, great events & stages, plus the Rally2 cars are the 'main show'.

He absolutely loved doing the ERC and hopes to come back again in 2024.

I think Paddon meant this differently. This year the target was purely winning the ERC Title and that meant taking points and no risks. Next year he aims to push for rally wins rather than the Championship.

According to a Gran Canaria website.

https://motoraldia7.com/noticia/el-48o-rally-islas-canarias-del-2-al-4-de-mayo-2024

There is already a date for the 48th edition of the Rally Islas Canarias (Gran Canaria) next year, where it will continue in the European Rally Championship (ERC), a championship that will be finished in August.

The date will be the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 2024, almost the same dates as in 2023, being the second round of the ERC also the same as last year, but this time after the Hungarian Rally. In a calendar with eight rounds (Hungary, Canary Islands, Poland, Scandinavia, Estonia, Rome, Barum and Ceredigion), the last round is scheduled to take place in August.

On the other hand, the presence of the Rally Islas Canarias in the World Rally Championship (WRC) would be almost done, missing only tie some sponsorship contracts, especially with the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Government of the Canary Islands, vital for all this to become a reality in the very near future.

Great news for the Ceredigion team and great news for UK rallying if that comes true. Good 50/50 split across East Europe and the rest of the estate, just hope the title isnt tied up early in the season so that the Wales round gets a decent Euro entry.

From logistical point of view, coming to UK is more difficult for teams from EU. There are more difficulties, but ATA carnet is one of the biggest, I think. Lot of waste of time with bureaucracy and also additional costs. And in terms of ERC, I am sure that organisers will not pay ferry (like island events like Canarias, Azores or Cyprus did in the past), so this will be additional cost...

The carnet doesn't look much when compared to the general cost/km and paperworkery of the game, although yes, it's something that wasn't there before.

PLuto, I'm not discounting your point nor that of who the competitor base is (neither are Brexit related), but you make it sound like the channel ferries are the same cost as shipping to Australia. Tolls and fuel to Cadiz or wherever the free ferries are would probably be the same for you, no?

This is great news for UK rallying !

The 2024 JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion has been confirmed as a round of the 2024 FIA ERC - European Rally Championship , in a move that will see this major international competition return to Wales for the first time in 28 years.

It will also be the first time the UK has hosted a round of a top-tier FIA championship since Wales Rally GB last took place in October 2019, just one month after Rali Ceredigion was first held.

Rali Ceredigion organisers have worked closely with regional stakeholders, commercial partners and local authorities to secure the resources and infrastructure necessary to support this major step forward for the event. After meeting with the ERC promoter to discuss detailed operating requirements and procedures, the 2023 event was observed by FIA officials, their report endorsing Rali Ceredigion as a worthy candidate.

It seems that no winter event in ERC anymore. There was a rumour that Arctic Lapland Rally could be next year and they moved it already to February, but certainly are not ready to pay big money to the WRC Promoter. It´s a pity that Promoter does not understand it´s unique value.

Rali Ceredigion will be one of the more expensive/awkward events for the mainland European competitors to get to however hoping for a good entry as the title may not be settled by then. Would imagine the rally will draw some of the top Irish tarmac crews over aswell.

UK rallying needs a shot in the arm exposure wise so all credit to the organising team for their work.

There was Rally Antibes in the past in ERC. But problem was that there were so different regulations between ERC and french championship. He is very talented driver, it is pity he didnt go more internationally in the past. He has bet everything on Opel Adam Cup, especially in 2017 he lost only to Tom Kristensson. But instead of continuing abroad, he has returned only at home. I know, it is mainly about money... His main target for next year is Stellantis Cup. I know that "Not traveling around the world" counts A LOT, but its interesting to see. WRC is 15° on the list, behind crazy poluted stuff like the European Truck Series and Nascar.... Guess the hybrid engines are not doing much for them?

I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between the emissions from the very same roads during the rally and in normal traffic in the same day of week. Not saying that they would be lower during the rally, just out of curiousity.

Competitors were not happy, they wanted to keep that category. After slow beginning, there were finally more R4 cars available. But FIA decided to cancel this category as they didnt wanted to to support it. So these cars still can compete, but only in general classification, where they are without chance. FIA killed also FIA RGT caregory and dont want to prolongue FIA passports for them. So currently only Alpine cars has valid international homologations :(

I agree but at least if you read the Dirtfish article it suggests they are employing a more strategic policy now rather than treating the Rally 2/R5 programme as a bit of an after thought as they have done previously. I suspect they are happy to develop a better car that they can sell in larger number in national markets and maybe see some of those cars on ERC and WRC events where the pace against the Skodas can be evaluated rather than get involved in a fight that they would probably lose, certainly early doors. They appear to be waiting to see how the regs for Rally1 and 2 develop which would be sensible I guess. As it is they have started off well in some National series like Portugal and Belgium so will be interesting to see how it pans out elsewhere

TBH, at National level the driver quality is often much more important than the car. Like in Portugal, Meeke was the difference and probably would have won in any Rally2 car.

"It’s time to reveal our plans for the 2024 season. This year Szymon and I will compete in the full season of the FIA European Rally Championship and in selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship in the WRC2 category.
We’ll start the season with ERC 1st round, Rally Hungary, which is moving to Veszprem and will take place on April 12-14. Then we have Rally Islas Canarias on tarmac and conclusion of the gravel part of the season with Royal Rally of Scandinavia and Rally Estonia, which we know pretty well from the WRC.
Then we have well known Rally di Roma Capitale and one of my favorite events, Barum Czech Rally Zlin. We’ll finish the ERC season with the tarmac Rali Ceredigion in Great Britain and Rally Silesia, which I know really well and have great memories from the past. In the meantime we’ll take part in some WRC rounds. We’ll compete in the ORLEN Rally Poland in June and in Central European Rally. The icing on the cake will be Rally Barborka in Warsaw.
I’d like us to make a proper use of our experience from the past. I feel well prepared both mentally and physically, so I believe that we’ll achieve our goals. I’d like to invite you to support us, I promise to provide a lot emotions and see you on the special stages!"

Armstrong unveils ERC attack with M-Sport

Jon Armstrong is set to challenge for the 2024 European Rally Championship driving an M-Sport prepared Ford Fiesta Rally2. The programme continues Armstrong’s strong relationship with the Cumbrian rally team as he steps up from recent Rally3 successes.
The reigning ERC3 champion has teamed up with co-driver Eoin Treacy for the eight-round campaign. Their maiden championship in a Rally2 car will start on April’s Rally Hungary.
“It is a dream come true to have the opportunity to complete a full year behind the wheel of a Rally2 car,” commented Armstrong. “We’ve been working on this for numerous years and I’m very grateful to M-Sport for the opportunity along with support from the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy, Seacon UK, C&M Motorsport Sales, and all of my close partners.
“It is brilliant to be working closely with Eoin [Treacy] and the MI Academy this year and I am really proud to be representing the rallying community at home.
“I am excited to collaborate with the other MI Academy members and to work towards our goals together.”
Last year brought Armstrong to ERC’s forefront after recording five dominant ERC3 victories in a row on a mix of gravel and asphalt events on his way to the category title. He made a sole Rally2 start on the Royal Rally of Scandinavia, once again exemplifying Armstrong’s talent and tenacity, helping him tie together this season’s campaign with M-Sport.
“Jon’s achievements in 2023 exemplify the talent and potential we strive to support at M-Sport,” said M-Sport UK Chairman Malcolm Wilson. “Our philosophy has always centred on identifying and nurturing young drivers, providing them with the platform to excel at the highest levels of rallying.
“Jon’s progression so far and this new chapter with us for the 2024 ERC is a testament to our tradition of fostering talent and ambition in the sport.”
Armstrong’s first overseas success came in the World Rally Championship’s 2016 Drive DMACK Cup where he claimed victories on Rally Poland and Rally Catalunya in a Ford Fiesta R2T. The 29-year-old’s Ford Fiesta R5 debut arrived a year later with two impressive WRC2 outings in Germany and Spain, including his first fastest WRC2 stage time.
Two years in Junior WRC from 2021 to 2022 gave Armstrong three event wins and 54 fastest stage times - missing out on the lucrative title on both occasions by the narrowest of margins.
Time in M-Sport Poland’s Ford Fiesta Rally4 and Rally3 cars was crucial in Armstrong’s progression on the world stage. To represent M-Sport at Rally2 level was always the ideal next step.
“I have driven M-Sport-built cars in all but one season since I began rallying,” explained Armstrong. “M-Sport was 100% where I wanted to be.
“For Malcolm and Rich [Millener] to give me the opportunity to drive for M-Sport is a dream come true and I must give a special mention to M-Sport Poland and Maciek Woda who have been fundamental in supporting me in recent seasons.”
Now, Armstrong’s full focus is on the highly competitive European Rally Championship. He has already spent several days with M-Sport getting up to speed with the Ford Fiesta Rally2 having spent the last couple of years driving M-Sport Poland’s Rally3 variant.
“ERC is an intense challenge,” described Armstrong, “with a very high standard in terms of drivers and lots of competition.
“I see it as the ideal place to prove myself, the team, and the car.
“Each rally has its own unique character and especially this season there’s some new events that should keep everyone on their toes.”

Richard Millener, M-Sport WRC Team Principal:
“I have known Jon for a long time now and I am really happy to see him in one of our cars competing at the top level of the sport.
“I mentioned Jon’s name to Malcolm a number of years ago as one to watch, and to see him being given this chance makes me really happy.
“Jon really showed last year what he is capable of, and although the top category of the ERC will be a completely different scale challenge – I am sure him and Eoin will be able to deliver some strong results by using a sensible approach to each event.”

John Coyne, Patron of the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy:
“I have personally supported Jon’s rallying since 2020 and have been delighted with the progress he has made in applying his innate talent and developing his driving and event management skills.
“I am pleased that he is now eligible for academy support and I am confident that our structured programmes, along with the backing of the M-Sport team, will help propel him to the next level of performance at the top tier of the ERC.
“With direct experience of Eoin’s capabilities in the co-driver seat, I know he will bring a further edge to Jon’s performance.
“With Josh McErlean and William Creighton in WRC2, Eamonn Kelly in Junior WRC, and now Jon at the top level in ERC, we are demonstrating that Ireland has an abundance of talented athletes, who can effectively compete on the world stage, given the right opportunities, guidance, and support.”

They are trying with this relatively new event. This is more than the 141 & 159km of the last two years. Plus only 18km less than Barum.

It will still be an excellent test on these great roads.

From competitor point of view, if you are travelling over whole Europe and spend all costs for transport, flight tickets, accomodation etc, you want to enjoy as much mileage as possible...

Can you summarize in short in written form for us who are lazy to listen it? :)

Paddon:
ERC 2024 has been tougher than expected despite winning last year; the i20 Rally2 hasn't been the best car but he still thinks it's better on gravel than tarmac; everything just clicked at Ceredigion to his surprise; he didnt think he'd have funding for the final round (now has); he is still working on the electric rally car in NZ but not progressed much and hasn't had any interest in it from other Manus; he hopes to do more international events in 2025 but not in Europe as too costly.

tnx for the link, mate!
he mentions "Australia" (they have a fun championship tbh, with bates, molly taylor, vangisbergen did some rounds last year) and "America" after saying they would like to do some international rallies next year. idk the rules in the american championship, i know its 'open 4wd' but not sure HOW OPEN it actually is, but he should really bring his EV to do one of those rounds. that would be cool! i wish we could see his EV more. he is not racing that car in the NZ championship. (i normally post the highlights from both aussie and nz series on the 'pacific rally' topics, just for the information)

he said he will do some events with the EV this end of the year, but its probably like last years, where they are more like exibitions, right? i dont remember him "braging" about winning an actual event on that car.
he says he wants to "expand" (not his actual word) his team more around the world as way of promoting their ideias and tech, he mentions something like they are working on the hydrogen refueling stations thing, say something about how they could even carry some kind of station with them on the car (?? something like that, just chatting around, nothing deep) and trying to "take the whole thing to the next level" (tho no manufacturer interest so far as eddie said)

edit: paddon also talked on dirtfish's podcast. if you are not going to listen, here some highlights, tho i recomend you just go and listen, he a great characte who seems to have both feets on the ground.
they talk about how sesks should do a year in wrc2 first before moving up because the doesnt know the rallies. he briefly compared espectations with sesks like when oliver solberg joined hyundai, that he had no way of doing super well without knowing the car, the stages and he was "burned"really quickly. he says hes not a fan of wrc drivers watching onboards of the cars ahead of them on the stages while waiting for their run. hes not a fan of every driver watching way too many onboards. he likes to drive around the stages and doing the pace notes. he thinks rally is about that. he also is not a fan of fans having access of ALL the onboards for EVERY stage because he feels fans watch a little bit then it gets boring. he think they should have some onboards and more storytelling instead. (i confess i used to love hearing the radio, checking ewrc results during the day, checking clips of crashes. i always found a little bit boring to watch onboards. some of them? GREAT! awesome. but i agree, i personally find it kinda boring. i used to watch my favorite 2 or 3 drivers in SOME of the stages and thats it.)
he talks about how he has not finding wrc very interesting right now because its predictable with only a few cars. he dont like the stage repetition at afternoon but understands thats easier for the organizers. he thinks wrc should focus more on people watching it live than people watching online because seeing rally cars live is incredible. he suggests doing something like "have three 50km longer stages on the morning, broadcast 2 of them then some highlights telling the stories" then having 3 city stages in the afternoon because its closer to the people and thats usefull, even tho drivers dont like super special stages that much
they talkied about lack of characters, paddons says its because the comercial partners not wanting drivers to say what they want to say.

The opinion of Snijers is natural because he was raised in the old times. No offence but it's very common that people prefer the era when they were the best. It's sort of the grass was greener when we were young.

Rally2 cars have similar power to the first WRC. They are not at all underpowered.

The development of suspension and tyres is natural. It can't be stopped. Today the cars work better because the world didn't stop 40 years ago. It would be pretty bad if it wasn't that way. The RWD cars are fun but they are slow as hell today and being the fastest is the point of the sport.
