After I don't know how many years of absence European Rally Championship visits Sweden. BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia will be held in Karlstadt as the 5th round of ERC. The event is a summer version of Sweden’s WRC round. Organizers promise multiple festivities and a party-style rally featuring various activities and activations offering widespread appeal :)
More about it here:
https://www.fiaerc.com/erc/news/erc/2023/erc-fans-to-be-treated-to-a-right-royal-speedfest/
– The interest in the ERC and BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia feels great and in order not to endanger the roads, we will set the maximum limit to 80 cars. So important to register early if you want to secure your starting place - says Clerk of the course Stig-Rune Kjernsli.

https://www.ewrc-results.com/season/2003/6-erc/Yes, FinnskogRally in norway was an "ERC" round, it was different coefficients on these rounds, so the points was more worth in some rallies than others.
I'm born and raised at those stages, it is one of my strongest childhood memories when out in the forrest in the darknes, lights in the forrest and glowing brakes in the dark.

So…now i am back after a couple years of absence from the forum.
This tread and event are the cause :)
Been many years since I was so excited for an event on my home ground.
This event gonna be stunning, the stages are so good and challenge stages with fast sections, crests and flowing.
Have drove a couple of them in local rallies and the others I did some recce on last week. Look out for more posts from me about this event soon :)

I thought Kristensson had curtailed his entire season until further notice? He may make the odd appearance in domestic rallies if an opportunity comes up but I didn’t assume there was any likelihood of doing Royal Rally Scandinavia just because it’s his home round of the ERC. He might not even do another rally for quite a while…

I have Ukrainian family name, though live in Russia. My co-driver’s wife is half Ukrainian with relatives there.
We’ve got a question on one of the forums, if we plan any participation. We have friends and relatives on both sides of the border. We vote for peace. In 2015 my crew was already using the peaceful livery. And now we need peace first, we hope for and believe in the rapid peaceful solution.

Yeah, Solberg family is known for their bad liveries. From the day Peter went private his racing car liveries and also now Olivers car liveries have gone from bad to worse. The only one, which I kind of liked, was the yellow C4 wrc - the one Petter will drive this week. All the other have been more or less disaster, and Olivers cars are not good also. Part of it is Monster. But also with monster you can have good livery - black car with white wheels for example.
The good part is that bad liveries does not affect speed, which Oliver has.

This was corrected only few cars later. And they switched off from QS after Joona, so they have completely missed second fastest driver on QS...

They said that the stages in Poland and Latvia were fast, but here the average speed on the 4th stage is over 133 km/h.
Average speed is like usual statistic - you can play with that, like putting extra chicanes to get average speed down but in reality - only in few places cars are driving slowly but rest of it they are flying constantly. For me it's just "let's to the things that on the paper it seems nice".
First loop done - competition seems to be nice on the paper, in practice, WRC-experience guys like Paddon and Solberg show why they have had reached there. As I understood, it's mostly new rally and new stages for everyone, so experience matters here how to get pacenotes done close to correctly and to be immediately on pace. No change to watch endless amount of onboard videos and memorize everything. Additionally - they are more used to that high speed from faster cars.

Then its even more impressive with the "lokal" amateur garageteam in 3rd place.
Seems drivers with less seattime struggle a bit here, like its use to be in Finland and Estland .
Locals may have some extra experience how to approach those road from speed and surface wise. It's the same everywhere. Compare Sesks in Latvia and now. He was way more competitive when he had the local knowledge. Compare Paddon in Latvia and now - not much difference. He is still there.

But he has the speed and has done good preparations before this weekend.

I just in case clarify here - I don't say that Larsen is doing good (only) because he may be/is local. I don't take anything away from his performance. Seems that he is surprised himself and this is really nice to see - it gives hope for others as well, that it is possible to show speed close to Paddon and Solberg. New names in stage top3 results are more than welcome!

Yeah, when was the last time when it was like that in WRC? In 1993 with Cunico or 1999 with Bugalski and Puras?
They killed it immediately!
I don't agree with here - I don't think it's killed by FIA or WRC (prove me wrong), but the base-level there is just so high. You can watch it in ERC, guys with WRC experience are clearly better than ERC guys. If local guys take part of WRC competition, no one notice them - they are not covered in ALL-live etc.
But in WRC2 class there are sometimes other names, mostly of course due the lack of competitors.

This rally for Ostberg is even worse than the previous ones. Not a single top 10 stage time throughout the whole day. He says that he knows what is going on, but can't change it:
I have an idea of what is going on, there is nothing we can do. I have been in this situation before, I am really on the limit and enjoying it. If you are losing more than a second a km, then it will be difficult. It has been a difficult rally from the start of the rally week and it hasn't gotten easier.
SS8 is the first stage when 1-2 is not occupied by Solberg-Paddon (in whatever order)

Great rally and entertaining PS!
Felt like the ‘right’ result to me, Solberg was the quickest, as expected really but Paddon is still damn quick in that i20 on fast gravel roads.
Sesks deserved his third place once he had dialled himself in after a slightly tardy Friday morning. If he can improve his pace on slower gravel roads and tarmac he’ll go far.
Mares a positive surprise for me and Ostberg & Veiby negative.

Exactly, i consider these as super stupid and dangerous solution. They change trajectory and flow of the road, the drivers must be in additional stress bcs of those items. There must be better solutions how to minimize cutting. If the road owner wants to have them, then do not make the rally or be innovative. That thing can flip the car up with big consequences.

So after 4 years in the C3 and much (gravel) development done by him Ostberg is no longer a good driver and cant set up a car ?
some quotes from Ostberg:
"I'm scared to death to be honest. I have never been this scared to drive before. I have nothing to say, I do my absolute best, but something is very, very strange."
"I think 'a bit uncomfortable' is maybe not the right thing. I don't know what to do. I'm just driving with what I have. We agree in the car that rally is normally fun, so we try and have a fun. We also agree that something is not right."
"We have to do something, so we'll have to search a bit and discuss with the team what we can do. We try to have fun and the stages are beautiful, would be nice to drive how I want, but every corner I feel I cannot drive properly so I'm losing a lot of time in places."
"We did some significant changes in service and it seems to work a lot better now, I made the mistake of putting hard tyres on the car, with the rain it didn't help so hopefully the stages don't have much rain on and we can push."
"It feels not clean and effective! I feel like I'm lacking a lot of power, I felt really low on power in there. I did some cuts, so maybe I took some bushes!"
"It's bad to be honest, I don't have any power so I guess that's it."
"I have an idea of what is going on, there is nothing we can do. I have been in this situation before, I am really on the limit and enjoying it."
"It was not so good but at least we have power again which is very nice and not shocking, but very difficult to drive yesterday, so I need to get used to power again!"
"The grip is not there and it is difficult because we are doing a lot of cleaning. However, I feel I have power in the car again. We are starting in front but it is a penalty for our speed yesterday."
"We have the power to do it but now we don't have the brakes to do it. The brake problem is back, we tried to solve it but we couldn't. It's quite slippy, so for the first pass on Colin's the winter is better, but we'll see."
"We've had an engine issue all day, we have two issues. One is fixed, but the response of the engine is not there as I need the angle on the car and need to floor the power, but it creates a lot of understeer so it's hard to get the rhythm."
bad setup initially but then an engine issue, then brake issues on the C3, add a bad road position because of the issues so I don't think we learned anything actually
we already knew fast rallies are a strength of the Polo
