The 47 Rally Islas Canarias opens its entries period and publishes its route

The second round of the FIA European Rally Championship opens the entries period today, Wednesday, March 8. The event that is held on the island of Gran Canaria, which will also accommodate the Superchampionship of Spain and the championships of the Canary Islands and Las Palmas, also makes public its route made up of 13 special stages to be held between May 4 and 6.
Two months away from its celebration, the 47 Rally Islas Canarias puts all the meat on the grill. Two aspects as symbolic as the opening of entries period and the official publication of the route come together this Wednesday, March 8.
The participants of the renewed FIA European Rally Championship, the Spanish Superchampionship, as well as the regional and provincial event of Las Palmas, can begin to register for the event that is set for May 4 and 6. The official website, www.rallyislascanarias.com, already has all the essential documents to cover this process.
On the other hand, the action will start soon on Thursday, May 4. San Mateo, in the same location as last year, will host the free practice from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. With a 3.09 km route, it will be the scene of a qualifying stage that will start at 3:03 p.m. Subsequently, from 4:15 p.m. and for two hours, this same road will serve as tests for the shakedown.
Green light in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
At 9:05 p.m. the event will officially begin with the super special of 'Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - DISA' (1.88 km). As last year, the surroundings of the Estadio Gran Canaria and the Gran Canaria Arena will be part of the first time trial challenge, although this year with a great novelty that will be announced soon.
Continuing with the route, the first leg will continue on May 5 with the specials of 'Gáldar' (14.95 km at 10:28 and 15:20), 'Tejeda' (10.41 km at 11:21 h and 16:13 h) and 'Santa Lucía' (19 km at 12:11 h and 17:03 h). This Friday will have a total of 88.72 timed km.
As has been the case in recent editions of the Rally Islas Canarias, Saturday's day will be the longest, with a total of 99.46 km and the longest special of this edition. 'Arucas' will host the starting signal (8.99 km at 9:54 and 14:24), to continue with 'Moya – Valleseco' (27.74 km at 10:42 and 15:12) and close this edition with the 'San Mateo – Valsequillo' section (13 km at 12:05 and 17:05), in its second run as 'Power Stage'.
In short, the 47th Rally Islas Canarias offers a selective and spectacular route that will delight the teams and the thousands of fans who come to witness this international event.

First entries.

I really hope this year we reach about 40 Rally 2 in Gran Canaria.

https://rallyislascanarias.com/index.php/en/component/k2/item/257-the-47-rally-islas-canarias-begins-to-add-entries

The Gran Canaria event already has close to a dozen international teams that have completed their registration. Among them is the Finn Mikko Heikkilä, the sensation of the first round of the year in the FIA European Rally Championship.

The 47 Rally Islas Canarias opened its entries period at the beginning of March and, after a few weeks, there are already several teams that have confirmed their participation. Between them, and in the absence of speeding up this process, there are already close to a dozen international squads that will be in Gran Canaria during the first week of next May.

Mikko Heikkilä, who was one step away from winning the first round of the 2023 FIA European Rally Championship, will visit the Rally Islas Canarias for the first time. The sensation of that first event of the year has accepted the challenge of the asphalt to continue measuring himself against the rest of the rivals of the continental contest.

With the Citroën C3 Rally2 that she already used last year, the Italian Rachele Somaschini returns to Gran Canaria to continue enjoying and competing on some stages that she liked. The Hungarian Martin Laszlo is also entered with a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, while the Latvian Martins Sesks confirms the debut in the Canary Islands of the new Skoda Fabia RS Rally2.

With vehicles from the Rally4 category, the Italians Roberto Daprá (Peugeot 208) and Alessandro Grillo (Renault Clio) are also entered, as well as the German Norman Kreuter (Peugeot 208).

We will see who will really start in Canarias. Calendars are very unfriendly this year. Two weeks before is Croatia (so who will do Croatia must almost directly go to Huelva to be in time for boat), just week after Canarias is WRC Portugal (so teams starting in Canarias needs to go directly to Porto and hope that boat will not be delayed to match the scrutineering) and week after is ERC Poland... Very bad for logistics for the team (also dont forget, that some teams are renting cars to different drivers in different championships).

Yes. Closure date of Entries will be next tuesday 18.

This official statement:

https://rallyislascanarias.com/index.php/en/noticias3-2/item/259-hayden-paddon-and-mads-ostberg-two-world-class-drivers-at-the-47-rally-islas-canarias

The first two classified of the FIA European Rally Championship 2023 are already entered in the event that will be held on the island of Gran Canaria between May 4 and 6. Together, the New Zealander and the Norwegian have two victories in the World Championship, close to 30 podiums and more than 100 stages won in the world championship.

The provisional entry list for the 47th Rally Islas Canarias does not stop adding attractions for an edition that is aiming high. Although the period to formalize the registrations ends next Tuesday, April 18, these days have served to confirm that the participation will have a very important quality.

From the outset, the first two classified of the FIA European Rally Championship have confirmed their presence. Hayden Paddon and Mads Ostberg, with extensive experience in the World Championship, will head to Gran Canaria to continue bidding for the continental leadership. Together, the New Zealander and the Norwegian have two WRC victories, close to 30 podiums and more than 100 stage wins.

Paddon, who will undertake a trip of more than 40 hours from New Zealand to Gran Canaria, will visit the stages on the island for the first time in his racing career. He will do so behind the wheel of a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 with which, up to now, he has not competed on asphalt. For his part, Ostberg will compete in the Rally Islas Canarias for the second time, after a 2016 edition in which he had to retire after winning one of the special stages. In his case, he will compete with a Citroën C3 Rally2.

But they will not be alone. The Italian offensive, always so characteristic in the European championship and in addition to the already announced presence of Rachele Somaschini (Citroën C3 Rally2), adds assets such as Simone Campedelli (Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo) and Simone BerTolotti (Citroën C3 Rally2).

The Swede Tom Kristensson (Citroën C3 Rally2), one of the entertainers of the FIA ERC 2022, will also head to Gran Canaria, as well as the Hungarian Miklós Csomós (Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo), who last year already appeared in the positions of head. Drivers such as the British Philip Allen (Hyundai i20 N Rally2), the Austrian Bogdan Cuzma (Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo) or the Hungarian Martin Laszlo (Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo), among others, are also on the provisional list.

Among the national and local ones, the return of José Antonio Suárez, who will debut the new Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 on the islands, as well as the eight-time regional champion, Enrique Cruz, who repeats with the Ford Fiesta R5 MKII, stands out.

Erik Cais is missing because the truck from Azores arrived too late. As the calendars of WRC and ERC are so bad this year, it was not possible to manage it logistically (as the truck to the port for Canarias needs to go directly after end of Croatia Rally and from Canarias directly to WRC Portugal)... Pontus was not planning to start in Canarias, his next rally will be in Poland (which is only two weeks after Canarias). Monzon was discussing about start with new Fabia RS Rally2, but it didnt managed. Alby is after shoulder surgery and is not healthy to drive a rally car yet.

You all got that wrong, but Llarena got it right ;)

He had to start in 22nd position, but was confident of making plenty of progress up the leaderboard throughout Friday and Saturday:

“For sure the rally is not over,” Llarena stated. “This is not like gravel, if this happened in gravel for sure you are done [from this position]. If the weather is normal it will be the same being fifth, 10th or 20th. My favourite number is 19 and I could almost choose this but 22 is okay.

“Now I have 45 minutes extra [in bed in the morning] but that’s important because we can see what the weather is doing. Six or seven years ago there was some humidity in the morning so maybe being 45 minutes behind is not bad.”

Today he wins SS2 :)

The thing is, that was a proper corner and the rail held. With Csomos it only seemed a sight bend and yet it broke.

I wonder what road traffic is normally allowed on that road ? It can only be cars as it seems anything bigger would easily go through that barrier.

Seems like a brutal rally this year.
has it been wet/damp all day?

It was only like that in the morning.

Its been worse today with most stages damp with some rain and low cloud / mist.

Impressive win by Bonato and another good result for the C3 Rally2. Pity he's not doing the full Championship.

Paddon the real winner in terms of points towards the ERC title. A great drive on his Canarias debut and on a surface that's not his favourite.

Llarena solid but never challenging - not great for the 2022 Champion.

No points for Ostberg, even on the PS, means this will have to be his dropped round.

And congratulations to Jon Armstrong in the Fiesta Rally3 Evo - a good drive with no mistakes and a fine time on the PS.

Not a single stage win by new Fabia. (Arguably didn't have a lot of good tarmac drivers).

Bonato one of the few on Michelin. On tarmac Michelin is usually better in damp conditions (worse when it is very warm).

What I like here is competors list is long :)

Additionally, top3 - all with different cars, different tires, different nations

And compared to WRC - if someone makes really good/bad stage time, they usually also win/lose places. Not now I'm 20sec closer to this place (far away anyway) before me...

How I perceived this round:
Well done to Bonato and Boulloud, perfect rally from start to finish, and got revenge for losing out on 2nd place on the powerstage last year.
Paddon really impressed me, in a car pretty unknown to him on tarmac and a new event. He was very consistent, and made a big step towards a good shot at the title.
The new Skoda was maybe a bit too big for the tight and twisty sections.
As for the Hungarians competing: well done to the 2 crews that finished the rally. As for Mixi, I am afraid that this crash might mean he's done for most of the season, as they didn't have the complete budget for the year.

Experienced Paddon driving smart with the Championship in mind.

I bet he's glad he didn't use Canarias as his dropped round now.

Thanks for posting this great film.

It's good to show behind the scenes and how tough this sport can be on competitors and their family & friends.

I really hope they find a way to continue, both financially and emotionally.
