This post was pushed down to the second page ?!!! Terrible.

I have a personal request. I'm looking for someone or some people to assist with translating a MotoGP related web site into Spanish, Italian and possibly German. If anyone is interested please PM me.

Ah yeah it had slipped, although it wouldn't be right to stick this thread.

(for those new to the forum, this thread is the general chit-chat thread. It also has historical significance of those of us who were here in early 2005 when this place was like a ghost town)

And, hope everyone's liking the new forum header pictures at the top - the bike racing ones for this forum are all straight from my collection.

The ice man is usually because they have no personality. Also, I think Val Kilmer was known as that in Top Gun which also counts against it! (Top Gun is cool, Val isn't). I see ya on the Stoner nerd thing but he has a hot missus so he's cool.

I see ya on the Stoner nerd thing but he has a hot missus so he's cool.

Kimi has a missus too, that doesn't stop him from getting caught with his pants down in strip clubs ;)

I agree that from what we see of Kimi on TV he seems like he doesn't have a personality. He must be camera shy or something because the reports of what he does off track suggest otherwise

The problem for Kimi is that he has a monotone voice and deadpan expression, which seems to be fairly typical of Finns (just an observation, not having a go.). He's probably fantastic in a comfortable environment with friends but he's not a showman. I think Pedrosa is very much the same.

Hey boys and girls, just a quick hello as I stop by.

I've been kept busy lately and done a lot of travelling. In recent weeks I've been to the US for the Motocross of Nations, Japan to visit with Honda people, Australia for the MotoGP race and Malaysia for the GP there last week. Phew, tough life hey. :p

Oh and I just wanted to publicly say "hooray" about Joan Olive's recent performances. In the last four races he's finished fifth twice, second and fourth and sits a career best eighth in points. Needless to say, he's a happy boy at the moment. :)

Anyway, back to work, as always I'll be keeping an eye on the place and I'll leave you with my favourite paddock babe from PI, those poor podium girls got drowned all day, especially by the 125 and 250 boys.

Manx TT aka Isle of Man

Most circuit racers won't touch it for safety reasons. Carl Fogarty was a notable exception, and set a new lap record there (respect!).

MrJan
29th October 2007, 19:14
Respect for the lap record but sadly Foggy is a d***head so pretty much anything he does is badly tarnished.

Perfectly understandable that a lot of riders won't race there, although wouldn't be surprised if it's the work of their sponsors in a few cases. A few of the BSB riders take part such as Michael Rutter but to be honest it's amazing no matter who's on the bike

Anyway, hello again my people. I just have three things to say (and two of them are about football).

- One, what's with the site problems? It's taken me forever to post today, it keeps not loading pages and saying the connection is timing out.

- Two, hooray for the Socceroos and the Olyroos, a pair of fine wins over the weekend :D (much more than can be said for my club side Melbourne Victory :angryfire )

- Three, did anyone else see the Scotland / Italy game? What the hell was going on with that ref at the end of the game? Scotland and Australia, both screwed over by the Italians and refs. In case you didn't see it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkPXOG0pLu4 (see around the 1:30 mark)

Finally, sadly no grid girls today, no time to search the net for them so here instead is a picture of Andrea Dovizioso on the new Honda MotoGP bike.

Here's something quite rare for this thread, I'm going to talk motorcycle racing, sort of.

I read recently a list of Australia's highest paid sportspeople and interestingly Casey Stoner only came in at number 12 but more surprisingly third in motorcycle racers. Supercross star Chad Reed is the highest earning motorcycle racer from Oz earning around $7Million US, Mat Mladin is second earning about $6Million US and Casey third earning $3.5Million US. You'd wanna hope Casey will get a payrise being a World Champ and all. ;)

Oh by the way, Greg Norman was the highest earning Aussie in 2007, he raked in about $18Million US, most of which probably went to his ex-wife.

Just thought I'd pop my head in, I've been a bit quiet recently too for various reasons.

Firstly, I've been a bit busy with my new job which I've been in since September which is going pretty well. To be honest I've also been running short on ideas for my trademark article-style posts (y'know, long ones for discussion) in the last couple of months, which is a bit surprising. Hopefully the New Year will bring new impetus! And I'm also starting my own karting team - just as a hobby, and I ran my uni karting team too so it's not a new thing. I raced in an indoor champ this year and did pretty well (2nd overall, lots of trophies) but the champ we're entering in 2008 will be a whole different league and much harder. Still, I'll keep you posted!

Congrats on the new job Jake, nice one!

Well, 2007 is almost dead and buried and 2008 is just about to spring to life so I thought I'd have a bit of a review of the year in a personal sense. Nothing to do with racing but stuff like music, movies and anything else of note for the year that was 2007.

Music - A really good year for music for me. Lots of good albums and am starting to get out more to see bands live. Strong albums by Dream Theater, Good Charlotte and Jimmy Eat World gave me plenty to listen to over the year.
Top 3 Albums
1. Project 86 - Rival Factions: further proression and evolution from these hard rockers. Though it took a while to get used to, P86 only enhanced their status as my favourite band.
2. Relient K - Five Score and 7 Years Ago: a return to form after the disappointment of their previous album. Fun, catchy and infectious.
3. Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight: a coming of age by LP with easily their strongest album to date. Has been on high rotation.

Disappointment
Chevelle - Vena Sera: just became pretty bland I think. Too many songs the same that just left this album fairly unmemorable.

Top Shows
Only got to 2 shows this year.
1. Linkin Park: great energy and played nearly every song they have. To top it off, were supported by the immortal Chris Cornell. Great night out.
2. Muse: were very good but not great. Their music was fantastic, as was the lighting show but the band themselves looked jaded and had very little crowd interaction at all. Expected more.

Movies - surprised myself when I realised I'd seen over 20 films this year with varying results.
Top Movies
1. Transformers: was a MASSIVE fan of the cartoon as a kid so was nervous as to how the movie would play out. So I was pleasantly surprised that I loved it when I saw it. So much so that I saw it twice!
2. The Bourne Ultimatum: huge fan of the Bourne series and was pleased to see that the finale of the trilogy was as strong as the other 2. Action aplenty but with brains.
3. 300: was unsure of wanting to see this movie as I'm not a fan of gorefests but I really enjoyed this movie. Whilst there is a lot of killing, the comic style it is presented in made it enjoyable rather than horrifying.
>Apologies to Reign Over Me, Smokin' Aces, Hot Fuzz, Ocean's 13, The Simpsons and Michael Clayton - all good movies.

Worst Movies
1. Shooter: dumb, unimaginative flag waving drivel. Some of the scenes in the movie made me think it was actually a piss-take which would have made more sense.
2. Blades of Glory: boring, stereotypical gags and just disappointing for a Will Ferrel movie. Jon Heder is still trying to find a good vehicle so he isn't always remembered as Napoleon Dynamite and he keeps failing.
3. Wild Hogs - same as BoG, boring, stereotypical gags.
>TMNT and Beowulf 3D were saved by their animated coolness from making the worst list.

Bikes - some ripping bikes were realeased for 2007.
1. Ducati 1098: could it be anything else at number 1? Sex on 2 wheels, Ducati have realeased another absolute classic.
2. Ducati Hypermotard: Ducati have created a new motorcycle segment with their big-bore motard. It also looks super-cool.
3. Kawasaki ZX6R: well I had to get a Kwak in there somewhere! :D The new ZX6R has finally returned as a race winner and is the best looking Japanese sportsbike around.

Personal - these are some highlights for me personally throughout the year.
1. My brothers wedding: though it rained, it was really a day of fun. Everything ran smoothly and was well organised so stress was at a minimum. I'm really proud of he and his wife. It was an honour to be involved.
2. My first brand new car: I've bought a bike brand new but never a car. After not having a car for around 5 or so years, I finally bit the bullet and lashed out for a new Ford Focus XR5 (ST) Turbo. It's great fun and I really enjoy it. Just a shame it's a Ford. :erm:
2a. Pit Bike: the other vehicle I bought is a little Chinese built Atomik RS125 pitbike. For $600. they are great, clean (well not so clean) fun. There is a big group of us with them now so it makes for much fun.
3. MotoGP/WSB: as always these are highlights of the year. Staying down on the Island with a bunch of mates and watching motorcycle racing, it really doesn't get much better than that.

I don't really care for lowlights and didn't have many anyway so we'll skip that one.

Anyways, all the best to all on the forum and here's hoping for an even better year in 2008.

Cheers,
Clint.

Some musical highlights for me album-wise would be The Shins, Interpol, Cold War Kids, Sunshine Underground, Richard Swift, the Manics new one, and The National (although that was a teeny bit disappointing due to my high expectations). I may have just marked myself out as an indie snob. Quite like Avenged Sevenfold's new single, though :p

I got to a few gigs this year though not as many as originally planned. The best ones for me were The Shins (see a pattern? LISTEN TO THE SHINS), Guillemots, Ben Folds, and The Inspiral Carpets latest reunion tour amongst others. Oh and I went to Leeds Festival and saw lots of bands there too.

I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure I went to the cinema once this year (!), so instead here are my stand-up comedy gig highlights of the year: Stewart Lee, Robin Ince, Rich Hall, Mark Steel, Omid Djalili, Ricky Gervais, Ross Noble, Bill Bailey, and Frank Skinner. Check them out. Plus Manchester's best comedy club and a total bargain at £2 for three hours of comedy, XS Malarkey. I'm now shamelessly plugging everything :)

And a few personal highlights:

New job - much better paid, more sociable, better prospects. Although I am now working for the convicts :p - I work for an Australian engineering consultancy called SKM.[/*:m:24xfmrdu]
New car too - I now drive something that doesn't look like a shed, a Mazda 323 compared with my old VW Polo.[/*:m:24xfmrdu]
Karting - I did an indoor championship and finished second, am now running my own outdoor team next year (and still doing the driving)[/*:m:24xfmrdu]
This forum - we're going stronger than ever; big thanks as always to you guys.[/*:m:24xfmrdu]Lowlights again I won't mention, especially as it's bad form to refer to someone by name! Mainly a very good 2007 though.

Looking back I realise that 07 was a cool year for gigs. Only went to three I think but each one was superb. First was Muse at Wembley which was off the chain then The Subways and Alabama 3 in my home town, both of which were great gigs despite being in small venues.

Film wise was also quite cool, Simpsons was like a long episode as I was expecting and was good, Transformers was better than I thought it would be (and Megan Fox is fine) and Die Hard was thoroughly enjoyable tosh.

Personally I've changed careers, started a college course and my old man has now got a racing car, all of which means that 2008 is going to be quite hectic. I still don't have a bike license because I can't afford to run a bike as well as a car (need the car for work).
My football (soccer) team managed to make the Conference Playoff Final (thanks to an amazing Semi Final 2nd Leg) but were outplayed on the day.

Biggest disappointment of the year: finding out that not all antipodeans have descended from criminals, another perfectly good stereotype ruined :p :

Hopes for '08: A much needed and deserved pay rise, promotion for Exeter City and a new car.

The Island is a great place isn't it Clint?? Do you camp or stay in a house on the Island.

We stay in a town house 1 street down from the main street in Cowes. Very handy!! ;)

There sure were a lot of people there this year for the MotoGP!! And the weather!! it was as cold as ...

But its all FUN!!

See you there in March!!

Go Roby!!! ;)

I love it. We stay in a house in a street off Gap Rd. We have been doing the same thing (though, not always in the same accomodation) for WSB since 1995 and MotoGP since 1997. The only disappointment is the death of atmoshpere in Cowes on the Saturday night. The place used to jump. It was a real party atmosphere with burnouts in the carpark near the pier and up the main street and people climbing the lightpole. Sadly, it was ruined by it's own popularity when carloads of boofheads came down purely for the nightlife. The year that one of the vendors had their van trashed, I knew that was the end of the free fun we had enjoyed. Now the night is overrun by cops. Shame, that. :(

I hope everyone's new years was fun. It sucks being back at work but also feels great that we are one step closer to the 08 season.

I managed to catch the Nicky Hayden docu on MTV over the holidays. There was a little too much Kentuky and not enough racing imho. Hopefully it turned on a few new US based fans.

Hi all, I have something for you that is totally unrelated to motorcycling, but hey, that's what this thread is all about. I came across an intelligence test for 5 year olds, and believe it or not, most adults fail the test. It consists of 4 easy questions. I will post the questions, and you can answer them if you can. I will post the correct answers on Sunday evening. Should be interesting to see how many of you get them right.

Q1: How do you get a giraffe in the fridge ?

Q2: How do you get an elephant in the fridge ?

Q3: The Lion King is holding a meeting for all the animals. They all show up for the meeting except one. Which animal does not go ?

Q4: There is a river you must cross, but crocodiles inhabit it. How do you get across ?

How many will get them right ?
Maybe some you have seen it before, but I thought it may be interesting for those who havn't.

I can answer Q3 and Q4, the rests might follow.

Although master on swimming it is not recommended to cross the crocodile inhabited river, make sure that it has the bridge to cross through.

Those are sleeping or posting on here usually do not come to the said animal meeting. ;)

Q2 = Open the door, take the giraffe out, put the elephant in and close the door
Q3 = The elephant, he's still in the fridge. Spot on Chris for 3 and 4.
Q4 = Swim across, the crocodiles are at the meeting.

If anyone has some of these, please post them, as I am bored waiting for the action to start for the new season. I have 3 weeks holiday now, and only so many new DVD's to watch. I think I will be logged on to the forum quite a lot for the next month. Cheers to all

Catholic education and a no.2# pencil
You don't even have to be Catholic to appreciate this one.

Little Mary Margaret was not the best student in Catholic School
Usually she slept through the class.
One day her teacher, a Nun, called on her while she was sleeping.
"Tell me Mary Margaret, who created the universe?"
When Mary Margaret didn't stir, little Johnny who was her friend
sitting behind her, took his pencil and jabbed her in the rear.
"God Almighty!" shouted Mary Margaret.
The Nun said, "Very good" and continued teaching her class.
A little later the Nun asked Mary Margaret, "Who is our Lord and
Savior?"
But Mary didn't stir from her slumber Once again, Johnny came to her
rescue and stuck Mary Margaret in the butt.
"Jesus Christ!!!" shouted Mary Margaret and the Nun once again said,
"Very good," and Mary Margaret fell back asleep.
The Nun asked her a third question..."What did Eve say to Adam after
she had her twenty-third child?"
Again, Johnny came to the rescue.
This time Mary Margaret jumped up and shouted, "If you stick that
damn thing in me one more time, I'll break it in half!"
The nun fainted...........

Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if they aren't prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand.

He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?" She again replied, "Why, yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him."

The defense attorney almost died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said,

"If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you to the electric chair

By the way, for an Aussie to only drink 22 gallons of beer in a year, I would call him a tea totaler. I think I drink much more than that each year, but then, I am in China and a standard 700ml bottle of beer costs 3 RMB (0.28 EU/48 cents Australian/41 cents US) per bottle for your standard beer. Memory-loss man tells of shock

Kay Dibben
January 26, 2008 11:00pm

STANDING outside a Brisbane hospital, the young European-accented man with memory loss spoke of his shock and confusion at not even knowing his own name.
In his first interview, on Friday evening, the man who presented himself at Royal Brisbane Hospital on January 17 said he saw faces in his dreams, but could not put names to them. Although he speaks with an obvious European accent, the young man (pictured) says he thinks he speaks English like everyone else.
"I don't recognise I'm speaking with an accent," he said.
"I can't imagine any other language."
Hospital tests have failed to determine the cause of his sudden memory loss and police have not been able to discover the identity of the man in his early 20s.
He says he has spent time in the hospital library, reading about psychology and memory, and occasionally going for walks outside the hospital.
His first memory of finding himself in the middle of Brisbane 11 days ago was of walking around the streets.
"I became seriously confused, even shocked," he said.
"I started walking the streets thinking, 'Who am I?'. It was a big question. It disturbed me."
The man said he tried not to panic and to think logically.
"I couldn't stay in the middle of the city for the rest of my life," he said. "I believed a doctor or somebody at a hospital could help me."
Missing persons unit head Detective Senior Sergeant Jim Ryan said a group of young people told police the man had been with them outside Rockhampton for up to six weeks until January 14. He told them he was born in Poland, but had not lived there for quite a while. However, he has not recognised Polish spoken to him, nor the nickname he used when he met the other people.

Sketches clue to man's identity

Janelle Miles
January 25, 2008 11:00pm

HE sits in a Brisbane hospital, drawing with obvious flair, yet has told his doctors he cannot remember his name.
The man, believed to be in his early 20s, speaks English with a heavy European accent but gives no response when police and doctors try to determine his first language. He has been spoken to in Russian, German, Slovak, Czech and Polish.
"He may not remember what language he speaks," says Missing Persons Unit head Jim Ryan.
"I know that sounds a bit silly. With his loss of memory, we haven't ruled anything out."
Tests at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital so far have failed to pinpoint a reason for his memory loss.
Gerard Byrne, head of psychiatry at the University of Queensland, said cases had been reported in medicine previously of multilingual people "losing" a language.
"Normally, the rule of thumb is that the language which goes is the one that you've learned most recently," he said.
"Those of us who deal with people who have got memory problems do see all sorts of unusual variants from time to time."
Associate Professor Byrne said amnesia was rare in young people and diagnosis was often difficult.
Physical causes may include migraine, epilepsy, problems involving blood flow to the brain and vitamin deficiency.
As time goes on and these causes are ruled out, a psychological condition, known as dissociative amnesia, triggered by a major shock or trauma, appears more likely.
"A rape, mugging or life-threatening experience can set it off," Professor Byrne said. He said that in such cases, the problem usually resolved itself.
"Making the person feel safe and comfortable and removing them from any stressful situation, having an expectation that they're going to recover rather than treating them like an invalid does them a lot of good," Professor Byrne said.
Some patients may need psychological counselling and anti-depressants, he said.
Gold Coast psychiatrist Philip Morris said treatment also may include hypnosis or intravenous drug therapy using Amytal, a barbiturate formerly known as a "truth drug".
"The Amytal acts to dampen anxiety," he said.
"You introduce it slowly and you can maybe get the person to start to talk about the events that caused them to lose their memory of who they are. It's called an Amytal interview."
Police believe the man spent several weeks in the Rockhampton area before arriving at the RBWH nine days ago.

Hi all, hope you are all well. I am just writing to say, if I am not online for a couple of weeks, it's due to the severe weather conditions here in China. If you don't know, China is experiencing the worst weather in over 50 years. There are snow storms all over China. There are places here that have never seen snow, that are experiencing blizzard like conditions. There is shortage of power, food, and water due to this freak weather. I think everyone here has been caught off gaurd by all this, so, I may not have electricity in the next few days. It is bloody cold here at the moment, and I am typing this with gloves on. Well, I'm still here, no power cuts yet, but they say the worst is not over yet. I can't believe the amount of people effected by this weather. There are up to 800,000 people at the main railway station in our capital city Guangzhou (pronounced gwon jo) that have been waiting for days out in the cold. There are up to 500,000 people stuck on trains that have halted between country stations due to power lines collapsing due to the weight of ice on them. I think it is the sheer numbers of people effected that is making it hard to restore all systems and get everyone looked after. The army has deployed 1 million troops to clear the ice from the roads, rescue those that have been stranded, and deliver food, water and medical supplies. In Australia, if this happened, the head lines would read, "Thousands effected by severe weather". Here, its 140,000,000 effected by it. The numbers are mind blowing. Anyway, we are not doing too bad at the moment. The price of food has tripled in the last couple of days though, as they are having trouble shipping the fresh veges in from here and there. It couldn't happen at a worse time though, as we celebrate the Chinese New Year this week. All the best from over here in China all, and from me, Happy Chinese New Year.

Its funny you should say that, on Tuesday I'd my sandwiches wrapped in foil , in an open Nike bag on the office floor, and I was only out in the shop for a few minutes a couple of times but at 10.00 a rat had gnawed through the foil and started munching one of my sarnies. Why is it that Honda are having so much trouble getting a pnuematic valve engine to work, when Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki have managed to do it ? I thought Honda were the benchmark, as far as new technology and engineering. Then you realise that Ducati is kicking their butts with the Desmodromic valves. Makes you wonder what Honda is spending it's cash on.

Hi all, I am so happy that I got through my winter holiday, without losing my electricity. It was said that we may spend up to 10 days without power due to the severe weather, but, the government and especially the emergency crews here have done an amazing job IMO. It is still very cold here, but, not as bad as in the North of China. I have a few days left in my holiday, but, I think I will just stay at home and chill (literally) out. I have some new DVD's to watch, and I am visiting the forum more and more as I get bored waiting for the season to start. I hope you are all well, and can't wait for the season opener so we can get the forum back into top gear. It has been a bit lonely here of late, with just the odd posts here and there. let's hope that 2008 is action packed to get everyone talking.

It is rather quiet in here. Hope everyone's well.

We should be making a big fuss about WSB which is going to be a brilliant season with 28 regular riders (plus, amongst others, the top BSB guys now able to wildcard at Brands and Donington in Aug/Sept after BSB took Pirelli as the sole tyre manufacturer).

It starts in a week's time, and it's looking rather open so far. Yamaha very strong; the new Duc's good too with Lanzi of all people doing some decent times; Honda keeping things close to their chest with a nominally 'rookie' lineup (Carlos Checa, Kenan, and Kiyo!); Suzuki with some real dark horses (Fonsi and Max Neukirchner) plus the old warrior Yukio who topped the times at PI; Max B and Ruben Xaus teamed together on Ducs; and plenty more. And a great-looking WSS field too!

We do have a thread for it of course...

Corrollary to No. 42. (Re. "Cobber") - in addition, the only people who drink Fosters in Australya are holidaying Seppos ;)

(what's a Seppo, I hear them ask, LOL)

Always loved this one, by Douglas Adams ('Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'):

Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the Bottom half of the planet. It is recognisable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge deep into the girting sea. Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology and plate tectonics, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight" proving that not only are they covering up a more frightening theory, but they can't spell either.

The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other land masses and sovereign lands are classified as either continent, island, or country, Australia is considered all three. Typically, it is unique in this.

The second confusing thing about Australia are the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep.

It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are curiously few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all. But even the spiders won't go near the sea.
Any visitors should be careful to check inside boots (before putting them on), under toilet seats (before sitting down) and generally everywhere else. A stick is very useful for this task.

Strangely, it tends to be the second class of animals (the Odd) that are more dangerous. The creature that kills the most people each year is the common Wombat. It is nearly as ridiculous as its name, and spends its life digging holes in the ground, in which it hides. During the night it comes out to eat worms and grubs.
The wombat kills people in two ways: First, the animal is indestructible. Digging holes in the hard Australian clay builds muscles that outclass Olympic weight lifters. At night, they often wander the roads. Semi-trailers (Road Trains) have hit them at high speed, with all 9 wheels on one side*, and this merely makes them very annoyed. They express this by snorting, glaring, and walking away. Alas, to smaller cars, the wombat becomes a symmetrical launching pad, with results that can be imagined, but not adequately described.
The second way the wombat kills people relates to its burrowing behaviour. If a person happens to put their hand down a Wombat hole, the Wombat will feel the disturbance and think "Ho! My hole is collapsing!" at which it will brace its muscled legs and push up against the roof of its burrow with incredible force, to prevent its collapse. Any unfortunate hand will be crushed, and attempts to withdraw will cause the Wombat to simply bear down harder. The unfortunate will then bleed to death through their crushed hand as the wombat prevents him from seeking assistance. This is considered the third most embarrassing known way to die, and Australians don't talk about it much.
At this point, we would like to mention the Platypus, estranged relative of the mammal, which has a duck-bill, otter's tail, webbed feet, lays eggs, detects its aquatic prey in the same way as the electric eel, and has venomous barbs attached to its hind legs, thus combining all 'typical' Australian attributes into a single improbable creature.

The last confusing thing about Australia is the inhabitants. First, a short history: Some time around 40,000 years ago, some people arrived in boats from the north. They ate all the available food, and lot of them died. The ones that survived learned respect for the balance of nature, man's proper place in the scheme of things, and spiders. They settled in, and spent a lot of the intervening time making up strange stories. Then, around 200 years ago, Europeans arrived in boats from the north. More accurately, European convicts were sent, with a few deranged and stupid people in charge. They tried to plant their crops in Autumn (failing to take account of the reversal of the seasons when moving from the top half of the planet to the bottom), ate all their food, and a lot of them died.

About then the sheep arrived, and have been treasured ever since. It is interesting to note here that the Europeans always consider themselves vastly superior to any other race they encounter, since they can lie, cheat, steal, and litigate (marks of a civilised culture they say) - whereas all the Aboriginals can do is happily survive being left in the middle of a vast red-hot desert, equipped with a stick. Eventually, the new lot of people stopped being Europeans on Extended Holiday and became Australians.

The changes are subtle, but deep, caused by the mind-stretching expanses of nothingness and eerie quiet, where a person can sit perfectly still and look deep inside themselves to the core of their essence, their reasons for being, and the necessity of checking inside your boots every morning for fatal surprises. They also picked up the most finely tuned sense of irony in the world, and the Aboriginal gift for making up stories. Be warned.

There is also the matter of the beaches. Australian beaches are simply the nicest and best in the entire world. Although anyone actually venturing into the sea will have to contend with sharks, stinging jellyfish, stonefish (a fish which sits on the bottom of the sea, pretends to be a rock, and has venomous barbs sticking out of its back that will kill just from the pain) and surfboarders. However, watching a beach sunset is worth the risk.

As a result of all this hardship, dirt, thirst, and wombats, you would expect Australians to be a dour lot. Instead, they are genial, jolly, cheerful, and always willing to share a kind word with a stranger, unless they are an American.

Faced with insurmountable odds and impossible problems, they smile disarmingly and look for a stick. Major engineering feats have been performed with sheets of corrugated iron, string, and mud.

Alone of all the races on earth, they seem to be free from the 'Grass is Greener on the other side of the fence' syndrome, and roundly proclaim that Australia is, in fact, the other side of that fence. They call the land "Oz", "Godzone" (a verbal contraction of "God's Own Country") and "Best bloody place on earth, bar none, strewth." The irritating thing about this is they may be right.

There are some traps for the unsuspecting traveller, though. Do not under any circumstances suggest that the beer is imperfect, unless you are comparing it to another kind of Australian beer. Do not wear a Hawaiian shirt. Religion and Politics are safe topics of conversation (Australians don't care too much about either) but Sport is a minefield. The only correct answer to "So, howdya' like our country, eh?" is "Best {insert your own regional swear word here} country in the world!".

It is very likely that, on arriving, some cheerful Australians will 'adopt' you on your first night, and take you to a pub where Australian Beer is served. Despite the obvious danger, do not refuse. It is a form of initiation rite. You will wake up late the next day with an astonishing hangover, a foul-taste in your mouth, and wearing strange clothes. Your hosts will usually make sure you get home, and waive off any legal difficulties with "It's his first time in Australia, so we took him to the pub.", to which the policeman will sagely nod and close his notebook.

Be sure to tell the story of these events to every other Australia, you encounter, adding new embellishments at every stage, and noting how strong the beer was. Thus you will be accepted into this unique culture.

Most Australians are now urban dwellers, having discovered the primary use of electricity, which is air-conditioning and refrigerators.

Typical Australian sayings:

* "G'Day!"
* "It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick."
* "She'll be right."
* "And down from Kosciusko, where the pine clad ridges raise their torn and rugged battlements on high, where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze at midnight in the cold and frosty sky.
And where, around the overflow, the reed beds sweep and sway to the breezes, and the rolling plains are wide. The Man from Snowy River is a household word today, and the stockmen tell the story of his ride."

Tips to Surviving Australia:

* Don't ever put your hand down a hole for any reason whatsoever. We mean it.
* The beer is stronger than you think, regardless of how strong you think it is.
* Always carry a stick.
* Air-conditioning.
* Do not attempt to use Australian slang, unless you are a trained linguist and good in a fist fight.
* Thick socks.
* Take good maps. Stopping to ask directions only works when there are people nearby.
* If you leave the urban areas, carry several litres of water with you at all times, or you will die.
* Even in the most embellished stories told by Australians, there is always a core of truth that it is unwise to ignore.

See Also: "Deserts: How to die in them", "The Stick: Second most useful thing ever" and "Poisonous and Venomous arachnids, insects, animals, trees, shrubs, fish and sheep of Australia, volumes 1-42"

* Actually Aussie road trains would have a minimum of 11 wheels on each side - sometimes 17, normally 23 wheels and occasionally 29+. On each side. Here's a typical example:

Did any of you have trouble with the live timing on motogp.com ? I thought it might be only me, as I was downloading "Hairy Italian Women" at the time :D I hope they get it sorted soon.

I hope you realise that I was only joking, about having trouble with the timing :D

Or if you don't mind being called gay if you are a bloke. If you're a good looking sheila then blokes will come running to help, even if you're in the middle of a desert! ;)

Holy crap, 5M per day! Wowee...

Glad you enjoyed the Douglas Adams prose. It's pretty cool, and - amazingly to non-Aussies - not far off the mark...

For Sydneysiders, I'm about to test the waters to see if there's interest in a local gathering (my usual bike group) to watch the PI WSB round; please respond here (or by PM) if you'd like to come along to whatever is arranged. I only associate with decent folks if that helps, and you are most welcome to grill me before committing :) I'm in the Inner West.

Roby, it just worked out that for the PI WSB round I'd be in Sydney; when we have another local-ish race (Sepang etc.) and I'm in Queensland, we'll take it from there.

I'll be at Phillip Island !!! :) I leave Thursday week for PI and can't wait.

Hopefully I'll be in Sepang too. I try to get to both each year..

Wow, I was just watching my local news. They say that my local train station is handling 5 million passengers a day over the last 3 days. It will take another 4 days for all the holiday traffic to clear. I just can't imagine that amount of people traveling at one time. I am glad I stayed at home this year.

I work for a public transport mob! and I can't imagine moving that amount of people! But our trains do run mostly at 98% on time!! ;)

Can someone explain to me...

Why Casey Stoner wasn't Laureus Breakthrough of the Year? Yet alone nominated for Sportsman of the year? :\

Unlike that Hamilton guy, Stoner actually won the title! And at the age of 21. I'd say thats a pretty big breakthrough, considering how often he binned it in 2006.

The fact he didn't get it is even more confusing considering Amelie Mauresmo won the award in 2007, seven years after her first grand slam final.

Now as for the World Sportsman of the year...

It seems like a bit of a joke when Rossi, yet alone the now dominant Stoner, never won the award (after only 3 nominations after dominant MotoGP years), when Formula 1 drivers are nominated despite winning championships by only 1 solitary point.
... or in the case of 2007, being nominated despite not actually winning the title, pretty much a sympathy nomination in the grand scheme of things.

Gah!

...

Now of course,

None of this will matter at the end of 2008, when Stoner wins his second title. (Based on that 1.3 second M-award gap amongst everything else)

:p :

Now in other news... when does this season start?? :D

Roby44

I will be going next year for sure. I managed to get all my business done in one day, so I came straight back home. I don't really enjoy Macau, except for the live girly show at one of the Casinos, though, I only bet $20, (that's my self enforced limit), it's worth it. The main reason I go to Macau is to renew my visa, and to buy foreign foods that I can't get in China.

My Mum had a weed plant growing in the back garden naturally. The seeds are quite often found in bird food. Obviously the plant was destroyed as soon as we realised what it was. You only need lights and equipment to grow the vicious stuff.

We had one growing at my high school (by we I don't mean me ;) ) It was just growing in one of the garden beds next to all the other 'normal' plants, until the vice-principle decided to get rid of it by digging it up and then burning it, yes burning it, in school grounds. I seem to remember classes were very relaxed that day, and the canteen sold out of cookies really quickly.

But as the NOFX song goes, 'If god created plants and buds that I find and abuse then who the f*** are you to judge me?'

LOL!

When I was in primary school our teacher asked us to each bring in a sample from a plant in our family's garden. One kid brought in a few leaves off a dope plant - we had no idea of course, but the teacher sure did. I'm always around, I just don't always have time to post. :)

This year will be busy again, my program with the Honda Junior team remains the same but I'll also be helping out two of my pupils from last year who have graduated from the junior program (they're too old now, they turned 16). And on top of that I've got Ava to look after and my fiancée and I are looking at moving in to a new place together so a house hunting we shall go and that (plus the required trips to look at furniture, paint and carpet samples and so on) takes up alot of time. I don't get it, I mean wouldn't it make sense to find and buy a house before looking at paint and carpet samples? And why look at furniture when you can't buy it yet? Yes I know, we all look at cars and/or bikes we can't afford but at least they're exciting, paint and carpet are not. ;)

maxu05
9th March 2008, 08:07
I know all about it Matt, my wife is exactly the same. We are always moving, and the missus is always dragging me off to look at something for a house that we haven't found yet. Good luck with it all, hope you find the house you like. Are you settling in Spain ?

mx311
9th March 2008, 08:25

Yep. I mean I've got a great job, a beautiful lady, a sweet little girl, great friends and generally life is good. No need to go anywhere else. Besides Honda Spain pay for me to fly back and forth to Oz a couple times a year so I've got the best of both worlds really. :)

Btw, what happened to the traditional posting of the gridgirls? Besides mine a few posts back they've really dried up, the posts I mean, not the girls.

maxu05

Well, I figured that Summer had finished here in Melbourne after a mild February but yesterday got to 30 degrees, today was 34 where I live and tomorrow is supposed to be 37 with another 4 days in the next week to be around the 35+ mark. I've been watching a bit of the first F1 race here in my backyard (on TV, I'd never pay to see it!) and it really makes me appreciate how lucky we are as motorcycle racing fans. 2-wheel racing is so far superior to open-wheeler racing in particular that it is actually quite funny.
