The stage lengths are quite curiously set, all Saturday stages are longer than Sunday and Friday, and all Sunday stages are longer than Friday and Saturday (except super specials of course)

Excellent from M-Sport to keep developing Fourmaux, shame for Suninen to only be in Rally2.

Too early for Fourmaux to drive WRC on gravel IMO, given his very little experience on it and no real results either. (unlike tarmac)

Then again if it's just a test how it goes then why not. Provided they have realistic expectations and follow up plans for getting gravel experience without running out of money.

What if the ammount of money is fixed and he could do 2 or 3 rallies in Rally2 instead? (maybe it isn't)

Another thing is that in WRC there sometimes isn't anyone to compare with (only comparing to top drivers can be frustrating). I guess there will be Loubet, Greensmith and Katsuta in Portugal though.

So we now have (semi) confirmed in WRC2: Østberg, Mikkelsen, Solberg, Suninen, Lappi (and Veiby).

Basically only Huttunen and Fourmaux missing from the WRC2 "competitors". (Dunno about Gryazin)

Nice. Let's hope punctures/technical issues don't play too big role. There will likely be some road-cleaning but then again in WRC2 leading car drives first on saturday/sunday so it should compensate first day.

Do WRC2 have road cleaning issues? I don't remember anything like that. The road is cleaned already by 8-10 WRC cars anyway. Usually it's more about just running into stones on the road and getting punctures, so the best road position is the first WRC2 car.

Østberg was complaining about that a few times the last two years (Sweden 2019 comes to mind), but often the position difference was large vs WRC3/other Rally2 cars.

So it looks like, after much speculation, the rally will be held with spectators. There is some fine tuning to do as Arganil, for example, will likely be under sanitary closure. I would also imagine the SSS will be scrapped.

Regarding our borders, due too the increasing numbers of cases in Spain, there are some discussions to close the border during the week.

We should have more news next week.

Hello everyone, I'm planning my third visit to Portugal (second in the north). Finally yesterday the itinerary and the stages were shown, I have found them in some webs where you can download for maps or earth, but does any of you know if the access to the ZE have been published, or when they will be? thanks in advance.

and also a last question for those who were there in 2019 (more or less same stages), did you manage to see two stages in the same loop, i think in this years friday afternoon it's doable because they are adding mortagua at the end of friday, but what do you think about friday morning, or saturday?

Otherwise if I can help anybody with some doubts don't hesitate to ask!

Besides being bad for him it's also bad for the WRC2 fight as this was probably the rally with most competition this year. (only Huttunen and Fourmaux missing). Already in Sardinia Lappi, Suninen and Solberg are missing.

Before the rally (and SD). There are a few drivers that I'm really unsure about and wonder how they handle the pressure:
Fourmaux - doesn't really have much gravel results or experience, after Croatia there suddenly are high expectations

Solberg- not much slower gravel experience or results either, very good speed last year on Sardinia, but in a very different car. Kinda expected to fight for win.

Lappi vs Suninen - there certainly is both pressure and rivalry included. Suninen is historically comparable to Lappi on slow gravel so this might be his best shot. But how is the Fiesta Rally2 now on slow gravel? Lappi for sure has to push given he has no clear program planned.

AnttiL
20th May 2021, 06:34
Any speculation? Portugal has often been filled with drama, crashes, punctures and technical faults, so it could be a surprising result.

I think Tänak is the favourite for having a decent starting position. In all of the three technical gravel rallies with Hyundai he's been unlucky, but also shown good pace.

Likely Ogier will suffer from the road position, but if he keeps it together, will be on the podium. On the contrary, Sordo could be very strong on the first day.

Will be interesting to see Fourmaux's pace. We consider him a tarmac specialist but he's had good pace on gravel as well. A decent starting position could award him with his first stage win on the opening day.

Also there's two new forest stages (one of them driven only once, other twice), and the Friday stages are only familiar from 2019 so that could also mix it up a bit.

WRC2 will be decided on punctures. I expect Lappi to have the best outright pace, but it's a different thing who is first in finish on Sunday. It could be even Bulacia.

mknight
20th May 2021, 07:18
One guy that doesn't even get mentioned is Rovanpera. In all of the slower gravel rallies last year he was clearly slower than the other 5 (4+Sordo). Will he be able to compete with any of them this year?

AnttiL
20th May 2021, 07:41

Yes, definitely seems that faster rallies are more natural to him and the technical stuff needs still learning to do. But interesting to see what they can do after the Croatia crash (and a similarly bad weekend in the previous gravel rally in Sardegna).

mknight
20th May 2021, 07:45
It's not big problem for Rovanpera since it's still very early (see for example Ogier in his first full year) but it's nevertheless interesting to follow.

Bad for him is that there on slower gravel often is quite a big gap between the top 5 and the "others" and he ends in between with nobody to fight. Kind of easier for Fourmaux who has 3 drivers to compare with.

We'll see if this kind of "class division" also happens here.

The PCR testing should be completely obvious now to anyone with half a working brain cell that it yields 100% random results, so obviously the guy is fine and will be fine. Hoping that someone else doesn't win the "lottery" that seems to be so popular nowadays.

does this mean there is some other asymptomatic person around Veiby's team that's the source?
Yes man, It's pretty logical that sick people are at home and asymptomatic (e.g completely healthy) people are out and about
