Rally Turkey is also driven in a shortened format. Friday morning shakedown, two proper stages on Friday evening. Saturday is like last year with the fast Kizlan stage, Sunday holds two passes over the longest and roughest stage of the rally, Cetibeli, and the Marmaris power stage, with a service in between. 12 stages, 223 km. No super special.

So, any speculations? Neuville will start fifth and he has been strong in the past, although has always failed on the Yesilbelde stage.

I would also expect a good result from Loeb with a good road position. He has also had a decent gravel pace in the new generation cars, although he hasn't driven anything near this level of roughness in them. The closest probably was Mexico or the gravel stages in Catalunya, and he was leading Mexico in 2018 and Catalunya in 2019 after gravel stages.

Will the M-Sport cars do better now that the engine performance is not so crucial? Last year Suninen put down a solid performance although never won stages.

Will the Toyotas make it to the finish in one piece?

I’m wondering if we can expect team orders for Hyundai and Toyota drivers...Rovanpera and Neuville will have a very good start position, and could (like Lappi last year) build a strong lead at the end of day 1.

Loeb drove Portugal last year as the closest rally in terms of roughness and he has quite slow. Slowest Hyundai basically all the time and a crash on top. His gravel lead in Spain last year was due to his speed on the mostly tarmac stage with gravel tires. So I don't expect much of him here (4-5).

Neuville is a clear candidate for win with Tanak second. One of the Fords should make it past few Toyotas. The Toyotas will hold together better than last year, but wont have top speed.

Have they announced that? The two Friday stages don't change that?

AnttiL
8th September 2020, 16:11
Loeb drove Portugal last year as the closest rally in terms of roughness and he has quite slow.

In Portugal last year he had technnical issues on Friday and then was second on the road on Saturday. It was also amazingly the first time Loeb did the Northern Rally Portugal, which the other drivers had already done quite a few times.

Portugal is one of the fastest and smoothest of these "technical" gravel rallies. I would say Mexico and Catalunya gravel stages (especially Terra Alta) are closer to Turkey.

To say the truth, I dont know exactly. But when I see the itinerary with so few kms, it is possible they will change the order after first leg (ie after 25 km of SS), which is really poor...

Yeah. Actually the FIA Sporting Regulations has been updated with a rule for "2-day format events" where the road order is changed midway through the first day, like in Estonia. But it's a different thing whether Turkey passes as this "2-day format"

Big job for the teams to turn around the cars for Turkey made clear by M-Sport:

"New suspension parts and transmissions will be fitted, alongside additional protection to safeguard against the rough terrain and larger fans and cooling packages to combat the soaring temperatures. The engineers will then fine-tune the set-up and raise the ride height for optimum performance on Turkey’s demanding stages.

Rich Millener:
“I also want to take this opportunity to praise our team of engineers, technicians, truck drivers and logistics co-ordinators. Travelling from Estonia to Turkey and getting the cars turned around in a matter of days was no easy task, but each and every one of them has risen to the challenge. They’ve all shown the spirit we pride ourselves on here at M-Sport, and I hope to see their hard work rewarded with a strong result.”

Except it isn’t full format rally.

The Sporting regulations have the Saturday midday order resetting only for "2 day format events".

Dust could be in favor of Ogier.

In addition, Loubet and Greensmith are likely the ones to be first on the road on Saturday...or if anyone has a spin, puncture or other issues on Friday, although two stages is a short time to do that compared to a normal Friday.

Gooooodddd morning guys.

Shakedown in an hour. From one side I really like this rally, totally different and hugely challenging from others. From the other side I don’t like it cause the luck factor is also huge at this rally.

Interesting to see Loebs pace here and how much has Toyota developed, Ogier and Evans sounded confident after Estonia saying they had good tests.

Ridicoulous. Two reporters talking to public worldwide should be shown properly. If they move five meters or talk to experts I wouldn´t say anything. But mumbling with those protections is not what I prefer to see.

Good PR for rallying? ... I do believe there are much more other things needed first...

It's a different way to value a rally. I usually use the perspective of WRC, just competitively, and in that sense Turkey is unique to the championship, the slowest and roughest rally.

There is a huge cleaning effect in such stages, but, as we saw, there was also the advantage of no dust when you are first, also only two stages to get very important position for tomorrow, the is rather exciting setup. I’m pretty sure it’s 4 minutes tomorrow.

Everyone complained except Ogier. Loeb didn’t complain but also mentioned there was a lot of dust but he trusted his pacenotes.

The wrc2 guys also complained.

E: even Ogier said in media zone that it isn’t fair for others. That it was 4 minutes last year and even then it was bad and now the decision to have 3 minutes gaps. Says it’s worse this year with the dust.

Firstly, I found Tänaks conspiracy theory on small gaps being there to promote the French ridiculous. It is not his first time with such statements, this one was made after he had had some time to think it through, which makes it look that much more childish.

That being said, I don’t have a problem with anything else any of the other drivers said yesterday at stage end. Am I the only one who actually prefers the drivers speaking their mind, rather than just forcing a smile and going “it is what it is”? Sometimes it feels that every time a driver does not like something or even if he just finds something difficult, he will instantly get blamed for “whining”

Ott with 4 tyres tomorrow like last year?

Doesn't have to do all day this time as there is a midday service, but then again he still has to go through the 38 km rough stage

strangely wrong choice. Now the brand new hards will not get up to temp with such short stages

Ogier gained massively here last year by doing exactly this. Running a medium mix in the morning.

I suggest it's better put full hard on long, rough stage and than use med's on shorts

I would expect nine time world champion to know what he is doing.

It is not always getting the best choice, it's about getting best choice that you can drive with confidence. Kankkunen once noted about tyre choice in Monte Carlo, where studded vs racing tyre is always a compromise, that no matter which choice you make, it's important to use strengths of that choice and minimize it's weakness where you can.

SS1 had some rough places in the beginning. SS2 and SS6 are smooth altogether. SS3 is mostly smooth with some rough places hidden in the 32 km length. The roughest sections will actually come tomorrow.

No :D But for example driving SS1 only once reduces the rough sections. Similarly, the super rough section where Evans and Østberg retired in 2018 hasn't been run since.

EDIT: Incorrect to say SS3 is smooth because it's not similarly smooth as SS2 and SS6, but it's like "medium".

Unauthorised spectators. I've seen people in every stage so far - wonder what the difference is here?
